The
train was speeding through the countryside and outside the window was a
wonderland for the little girl...her nose pressed against the glass.
"Look mommy, there's a sheep and a
horse."
"Look mommy there's an old
bridge."
"Look mommy a red barn."
Finally, the mother embarrassed by it
all, spoke to the man across the aisle and said, "She still thinks
everything is wonderful."
It was during World War II and people in
London were dying on a regular basis.
A father
and his son heard the air raid sirens and began to run from their front
porch to the Air Raid shelter.
The mother ran up the stairs to get their
baby who was asleep.
Later, when it all over, the father and
son returned to the shambles that had been their home.
In what was left of the living room the
young mother and child lay dead.
The father began to weep and then seeing
his young son Johnny looking up at the stars asked his young son, "What
are you doing Son?"
"Oh, I'm watching God hang out the stars."
"Oh, I'm watching God hang out the stars."
What would it be like to be born old and
each year grow younger?
Each day grow more innocent and wide
eyed.
Well, that isn't going to happen but you
can gain back some of that wonder if you work at it.
You and I can emulate perhaps with less
spontaneity but nevertheless with reality the attitudes of a child.
Did you know there are 40 species of
birds that never fly. They have wings
and feathers on those wings. They are
every inch a bird but they remain grounded.
Why?
Because they never extend their wings outward and upward.
Do you do that? Keep your wings tucked in. One day when you read the word
"adult" after your name did you divorce yourself from wonder...stop
seeking new sights to see...new hobbies to try....new worlds to conquer.
I know life can be hard and jobs
boring...but think of all the time you have to read new books...walk new
streets...search out new spiritual heights.
I learned to ride a bicycle early...then
one day I took it an extra notch...I led a 500 Youth Bicycle tour across
Europe...(you don't have to go to Europe to take a bicycle tour in all kind of
wonderful places)...I have friends who have taken up art in retirement rather
than retire to a rocking chair...and young couples who don't just walk their
babies but run them along the streets pushing a stroller...and those who plant
little farms in a backyard...and...(the list goes on)
You want to find wonder? You have to go searching for it.

THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
It is little wonder that once the war was over,
wretched memories fed anger loud and long.
Neither side could be proud of some things that happened during the war
or at their many prison camps. The
meanness in some men had multiplied.
They felt their uniforms allowed it.
Andersonville, or Camp
Sumter as it was officially known, in
southwest Georgia
is remembered as one of the worst.
By the end of the war, it had held 50,000
prisoners on a piece of land no larger than twenty-six acres.
Some men had called pits in the ground
their home. During its short
fourteen-month existence, 13,000 soldiers who had survived in battle died in
captivity under the most terrible conditions.
When the war was over the superintendent
was hanged.
