The actor was asked by those in small church room where they were gathered to do a recitation.  “I will gladly do so but what would you have me recite.”  Almost as one voice they said “The 23rd Psalm.”

“Fine…but I do have one request…after I have recited it…I want our minister to recite it.”

`Me?' said the preacher, in surprise, 'I am not an elocutionist, but, if you wish it, I shall do so.”

When the actor had finished…the spellbound audience broke forth in applause.

Then the old minister rose and began “The Lord is my shepherd…”  When he finished there was not a dry eye in the room.

The actor rose and his voice quivered as he said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, I reached your eyes and ears: he has reached your hearts. The difference is just this: I know the Psalm but he knows the Shepherd.'
THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“A book superior in style and content)

Quote from book below

Into this fray, a political Lincoln, a military Lincoln and a spiritual Lincoln moved toward monumental decisions.  Struggling for truth, sometimes befuddled by reality, this man who knew his Bible as well as some preachers would often be asked if he thought God was on the side of the North.  His reply always remained the same. “My concern is not whether God is on our side.  My great concern is to be on God’s side.9 It would be difficult to place too much emphasis on the spiritual undergirdings he brought to every decision.  This child of the wilderness had had no city lights to mute the stars or compete with moonlight.  He had watched his own growing, side by side with all the other growing things in field and forest.  It seemed natural to him to ponder that human life must be more of mind, and soul a reality.
