Once upon a time two men took a journey and, as fate would have it, even though starting hundreds of miles apart they each chose hilltops on which to build their new homes that were only a quarter a mile away from each other.

They arrived in the warm, dry season when the air was pleasant, the sky blue and no rain was promised.

Before beginning their trips, each had pledged to carry with them hammers, axes, nails and saws and whatever else would enable them to build a fine home in which to live. And so now they both pledged to gather the proper materials and get their homes completed before inclement weather arrived.and  the first day of their new beginning they were infinitely ready to construct.

But then, a difference arose.

The first man remembering that part of his pledge included follow through began immediately to erect.

He took out an ax and began to chop down nearby trees.  Her wrestled them in place and by the end of the month walls rose toward the heavens.

It was not easy.

It would have been easy to conveniently forget what he knew was right and necessary.

But he knew that if the dream he had pledged was to come true it would require sacrifice.  By the time of the first rain he had enough of the roof finished that he was able to come in out of the rain.

And by the time of the first snow his new fireplace blazed warm from the birth of a flaming fire.

With the second man it was different.

His energy level and resolve slackened and so on the first day he rested and on the second day he did the same.

Making excuses more often than effort his walls rose slowly and by the first rain their was no roof at all.  When the first snow came there was nothing to protect him from the elements so he took a great cold and in a very short time he was very sick.

As he lay, unable to rise, he cursed himself for forgetting that “Promises are like seeds.  If they are planted and not fed with action they become not flowers of hope but rather graves without even a gravestone.”

               THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

                  Quote from book below

Would it have made any difference if the man who was President of the United States during the Civil War had not been a Christian?

It took the lives of over six hundred thousand young men, one in every five of the country’s best, so it is no small question to ask.

Is there always the danger that a Christian leader will still be arrogant, angry and more than willing to shape pruning hooks into spears?7

Unfortunately, yes.  But not Abe.  His words spell out clearly how he felt about solutions by the sword.  “The man does not live who is more devoted to peace than I am.  None who would do more to preserve it.”
