Once upon a time two men took a journey and, as fate would have it, even though starting hundreds of miles apart they each chose hilltops on which to build their new homes that were only a quarter a mile away from each other.

They arrived in the warm, dry season when the air was pleasant, the sky blue and no rain was promised.

Before beginning their trips, each had pledged to carry with them hammers, axes, nails and saws and whatever else would enable them to build a fine home in which to live. And so now they both pledged to gather the proper materials and get their homes completed before inclement weather arrived.and  the first day of their new beginning they were infinitely ready to construct.

But then, a difference arose.

The first man remembering that part of his pledge included follow through began immediately to erect.

He took out an ax and began to chop down nearby trees.  Her wrestled them in place and by the end of the month walls rose toward the heavens.

It was not easy.

It would have been easy to conveniently forget what he knew was right and necessary.

But he knew that if the dream he had pledged was to come true it would require sacrifice.  By the time of the first rain he had enough of the roof finished that he was able to come in out of the rain.

And by the time of the first snow his new fireplace blazed warm from the birth of a flaming fire.

With the second man it was different.

His energy level and resolve slackened and so on the first day he rested and on the second day he did the same.

Making excuses more often than effort his walls rose slowly and by the first rain their was no roof at all.  When the first snow came there was nothing to protect him from the elements so he took a great cold and in a very short time he was very sick.

As he lay, unable to rise, he cursed himself for forgetting that “Promises are like seeds.  If they are planted and not fed with action they become not flowers of hope but rather graves without even a gravestone.”

                  Quote from book below

Would it have made any difference if the man who was President of the United States during the Civil War had not been a Christian?

It took the lives of over six hundred thousand young men, one in every five of the country’s best, so it is no small question to ask.

Is there always the danger that a Christian leader will still be arrogant, angry and more than willing to shape pruning hooks into spears?7

Unfortunately, yes.  But not Abe.  His words spell out clearly how he felt about solutions by the sword.  “The man does not live who is more devoted to peace than I am.  None who would do more to preserve it.”

SURVIVORS

Back in the days before mechanism took over, mules were used to pull the coal cars through the mines.

On Sundays, the one day of the week that the miners did not work, the mules were brought up into the light.

If they were left in darkness for too long they would go blind, their eyes no longer able to discern the light.

            Some people are so afflicted.

They choose eternal darkness and eventually go completely blind.

Blind to the light of the Holy Spirit.  Blind to the healing hand of the Master Physician.

They do not believe as did David when he wrote, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid.” (Psalm 27:1)

And so they are terribly, miserably, overwhelmingly blind.

How does that old hymn go?

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, oh abide with me.

Who wrote these words?  An old preacher in the year 1847.  For years he had ministered to sailors, many of whom sailed forth to be swallowed up in raging storms.

And now, old, tired and having preached his last sermon, he asked a final favor of his Jesus, “Give me one last blessing.  Give me the ability to write a hymn that will provide comfort to the survivors of these men lost at sea.”

This is you and I, survivors on the sea of life.  We all have felt losses; been swallowed up sometimes by evil; been unable to endure the storms of temptations; beat down by drugs or depression, or loss of dignity, or mean thoughts.  And so we pray to the God-sent Nazarene who journeyed down from heaven to benevolently save us from ourselves.  To help us gain empathy from our pain.  To help us realize that life is not always something to be enjoyed but a lesson to be learned.  In short, sometimes we must learn to hang by our fingertips till the Lord helps us find a place to put our feet.

Quote from book below

To mention Christianity today is to create a firestorm of complaint.  “We must assure separation of church and state” is the politically correct outcry.  Unfortunately, most who are straining their vocal chords, have not strained any intellectual efforts to research how the original quote actually reads.

When Thomas Jefferson dipped his pen and began to put down his thoughts, he wrote, “a wall of separation between Church and State.”

Even more interesting is the reason why it was written.  A group of less than joyous Baptists in Connecticut did not want to have their denomination play second fiddle to the Congregationalists.  The Congregationalists?  They would have been perfectly willing to be top dog as the state’s choice.  Episcopalians in Virginia were no less reluctant to create the same problem, if given half a chance.  Thomas Jefferson stuck by his guns in this state, as well.

Separation of church and state?  But should that mean separation of God and man?

Would you give yourself to a quest that has the strength of eternity in it?  Then remember that “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”  (Matthew 4:4)

It is a basic truth.  If you give yourself to the cheap, the tawdry and the worthless; you cannot help but become cheap, tawdry and worthless yourself.

I firmly believe that there is something high and holy in every man or woman until in a short, or sometimes more lengthy period of time, each kills it in themselves.

Shout too many curses and too few prayers and slowly but surely your soul will shrivel and began to die.

I was ordained in 1954 and in all the years since that privileged moment I have seen a lot of bad but I have also seen a lot of good.
I have seen folk redeemed, whom it seemed were beyond redemption.

Changed, though most around them would have said it could never happen.

For often, though not often enough, someone catches the spark of the Nazarene.

And catches on fire.

And a heart dedicated to hate trades in this miserable sickness for love.

And a member of the male gender becomes…

A father redeemed by the love of God and loves his children with like- minded patience and love.

And becomes a loving husband

And lives each day more and more as a child of God.

And a member of the female gender becomes…

A mother worthy of the name, and blessed is the child who is the recipient thereof.

And becomes a loving wife

And lives each day more and more as a child of God.

 THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

Quote from book below

Do you know that five hundred and fifty-five feet above the ground, there sits on top of the Washington Monument an aluminum cap upon which is etched the phrase Laus Deo

What difference does it make? From this lofty height overlooking sixty-nine square miles of the District of Columbia, it sends out the message Praise be to God.  Would you prefer to change the writings on the 12th landing of its 898 monument steps, a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore?

What of the memorial on the 20th step presented by Chinese Christians?

No one argued against having Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6 being engraved on the 24th.  School children from New York and Philadelphia had suggested this and it was accepted as a splendid idea.

Is there any significance that when the cornerstone was laid in 1848 a Holy Bible was put there by the Bible Society?

There could, of course, have been a book on atheism or no religious book at all, but not if the leaders at that time had not truly believed that this was a “nation under God.”

Our 16th president built on such cornerstones, as well as the personal cornerstones of men such as George Washington who wrote, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”5  Then there was Thomas Jefferson who, before he was Chief Executive, made sure God was part of the Declaration of Independence.  His request was unanimously accepted on July 4, 1776.

Yet another of the Founding Fathers, still to be Commander-in-Chief, John Adams, wrote, “Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.”6
