SPIRITUAL ARAHAM LINCOLN

This
notice appeared in the window of a coat store in Nottingham, England: We have
been established for over 100 years and have been pleasing and displeasing
customers ever since.
We have made money and lost money,
suffered the effects of coal nationalization, coal rationing, government
control, and bad payers.
We have been cussed and discussed, messed
about, lied to, held up, robbed, and swindled.
The only
reason we stay in business is to see what happens next.
Life is a kaleidoscope, with all the shapes and
sizes of life intermingling with our good choices and bad. Therefore, it behooves us to not just sit
back and let things happen but at the very least be positively doing some intelligent shaping of our own.
What is the right way? What is the wrong way? It is the crossroad question we ask and ask
and will continue to ask until our last day on earth.
In thinking about
this consider the following. During your
daily decision making where are you when you makes these daily decisions? I am, of course, referring to where you are
physically which for a lot of the time is where you work...and you have little
choice...you work where your work takes you.
But when you
are not working, where are you? You are
standing or sitting with a group of people carrying on a conversation with
certain key words that define your conversation. Where you are then is a matter of choice.
If cursing is front and center or a host of dirty
jokes or bantered gossip or any of an
array of negative conversational topics the affect on you is obvious.
If
your discussion is political and studied or instead strident, the affect is
obvious.
If
a part of your conversation is in church or with good people whose insights and
ideas or ideal, the affect is obvious.
Where
are you in a weeks worth of time...your answers define the obvious influence.
Have you ever
heard of the Jukes family - There has been careful research in to the history
of this one criminal family known as Jukes, and it is conspicuous for its long
line of paupers, waste, imbecility, insanity, prostitution and drunkenness.
A total of
1,200 decedents have been traced from this prolific family tree.
Some 400 were wrecked physically by their
sins;
310
were professional paupers;
130
were convicted criminals;
60
were perpetual thieves and pick pockets;
and
7 were murders.
Out of the 1,200, only 20 ever learned a trade
and 10 of these learned it while in prison!
If you cannot
personally get excited about living a godly and exceptional life think on the
legacy you are laying out.
But do you want to walk straight rather
than crooked. Most folk do. And what to
do you know...Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths
straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
2000 years ago there was a saying and signs that
read "All roads lead to Rome."
And then Christ
came down to earth and His disciples began to spread out to preach the road to
salvation, to Christ, to the gift from the throne of Grace.
Choices.
Who's doing the chasing.
And
that’s why Jesus says what he says next.
“If any of you put a stumbling
block before one of these little ones who believe in me it would be better for
you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into
the sea.”
That's strong talk but that is what Jesus
said. Your legacy...the memory of you
influences old and young. Those children
of yours, those cousins, that next door neighbor.
Just outside the Dung Gate in Jerusalem is
where they dump their garbage and that is what we are called to do...to produce
less and less garbage and garbage thoughts...and when we do...dump
them...certainly not embrace them.
The former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm made an interesting statement "Future historians
will say the multiple factors that led to the decline of America, were led by
the failure to replace ourselves with enough stable children born to families
with the ability to raise successful children themselves."
We
have four huge trees out in the front of our house on a street that doesn't
really have many trees. They tower 60 plus feet in the air and spread into
each other.
There
is no moral statement here but a point can be made. They certainly point out that I love trees.
What do you love?
Your neighbors know and your ancestors will know and the world
influenced by what you love and follow will know.
Would you know
contentment...then know that looking forward to your future you can see what your ongoing improvement
program is preparing as your past...if
you love your Lord a lot and your deeds show it....or...
As Paul looked
back on his life he was able to say...
"I have fought the Good Fight"
"I have finished the Race" -
"I have kept the Faith"
"I have finished the Race" -
"I have kept the Faith"
Do you know the average
number of words in a typical obituary is 50 words? 50 words to explain who you were. And think about it. You are in a sense writing your obituary
right now by how you live.
Will your obituary
record you as a great man or woman?
By whose standards? By what standards?
Is your bank account
not so very big but your deposits in heaven quite a bit?
Judged by man's standards
or God's where are you ?
Who are you?

QUOTES ON LEGACY
There are only two lasting
bequests we can give our children... one is roots, the other wings.
Stephen Covey (1932 -)
No legacy is
so rich as honesty.
William Shakespeare (1564 -
1616)
If I have
done any deed worthy of remembrance, that deed will be my monument. If not, no
monument can preserve my memory.

A new
quote (posted nov 12) below from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM
LINCOLN (read the rave reviews
below the quote)
Was Lincoln, before he died, overly proud
that he had so much to do with the preserving of the Union?
It
is more likely that he quoted once again words of one of his favorite poets,
William Knox, “Oh, why should the spirit of mortal be proud?”
As he walked the streets of Richmond, Virginia
in an unannounced visit after that city had fallen to the North, it was said
that he was the man of the people among the people.
When
an elderly Negro had run toward him shouting praise, Lincoln lifted his hat and
bowed, and wiped away a tear or two.

"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest
theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human
works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore
the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was
doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the
midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he
distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's
'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk
out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book
for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick
compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety
transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United
States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often
expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a
Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this
faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that
Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through
the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is
very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick
makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed
them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The
Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

is no other organization in the world like the church. It is a breed unto itself. It is a congregation of sinners, not a
country club for saints. To become a

How can
we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing? How can we not be foolish little men and
women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.
Well, first we must do more than just pray. We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY
OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON SUNDAY APRIL 15. ENTITILED
Two stores faced each other across a very
busy street. Their owners were in constant competition
with each other. One day, the owner of
one store put out a sign that read – If
you want it, we have it!
Almost immediately the other owner put out a
sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t
need it!
A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY

WHO ARE
YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
Who are you? Whose are
you?
You influence and are influenced according
to the answer you give.
Are you are the flavor of the month because
you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what? If so, consider being more independent in our
thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.
It may be easier being someone's shadow but
wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS THURSDAY APRIL 5 FROM THOUGHT ENTITLED "Who
Are You? Whose Are You?"
This is an old quote, and a romantic one
as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.”

POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING THURSDAY MARCH 29th THOUGHTS ENTITLED WHO
ARE YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
In a Peanuts
cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.
“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day
of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.
And it’s your fault!”
Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How
could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”
To which she declares, “You’re my
friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”
In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more
complicated.
