Determination
in life can produce so many rainbows from the storms of discouragements...they
really can.
It isn’t always easy because Murphy’s law
is alive and well and sometimes it
seems to be a law that multiplies.
Things keep going from bad to worse.
We lose an article and don’t find it until
we have replaced it.
We become accident prone.
And that is when we need keep on keeping
on …yes, I just said it again…and maybe we won’t fly …and maybe we’ll not rid ourselves of whatever burdens seem to
be weighing us down…but we can be stronger in spirit…determined to give
our all…and count our blessings.
And one thing is sure…if we give into despair…it will only get worse.
I’m not talking about spinning our wheels…I’m talking about figuring what we can still do with a
problem and aiming in the direction of at least some solving of it.
Start off by making jokes about your
problem. It works such as the
title for an article I wrote on how to handle hip surgery, “Hip Hip Hooray. ”
Or the classic…”It’s
always the darkest just before it goes pitch black. ”
The last thing
you want to do is fall in love with your limitations.
No not that. Pray to find another way to reach your dream or figure a new
dream that you can reach.
Face
it…there will always be disappointments but
doesn’t mean you will be helped by wallowing in self pity.
Believe this…many
times in our lives…God is at work even though we can’t see his footsteps.
You know…that old
cliché’ one door closed…another door opened…we’ve all had it happen.
Once a little boy was leading his sister
up a mountain path he had found and
she complained, “Why this isn’t a path at all. It’s all rocky and bumpy. ”
“Sure,” he answered, “but the bumps are what you climb on. ”
Some people use the bumps in life to
climb on while others just trip over them.
Some come out of suffering stronger.
Some come
out weaker.
Some learn from pain and mistakes. Others
wouldn’t learn if they had an eternity.
Thomas Edison, fired from his job
on the railroad went on to become one of our greatest scientists.
Abraham Lincoln, at 46
considered himself a failure. He certainly
built up a history of failure, failed storekeeper, failed in attempts to be
elected to political office, etc. He went on to become President of these
United States.
Dr.
A. J.
Cronin began his work as a doctor, broke his health and retired to write. He became one of the world’s greatest and most
beloved writers.
Whistler the artist wanted to be a
soldier, but failed in a
chemical examination. He often laughed and said, “If silicon had been a gas, I would have been a major general. ”
The medical missionary David Livingstone, after 16 years in Africa, spoke the following. on a visit to Glasgow University.
“Shall I tell you what sustained me amidst the toil and hardship of
my exiled life? It was Jesus promise,
‘Lo, I am with you always even unto the end. ” He was older than his age. As he spoke
his arm hung limply at his side. And this man who never thought of giving
anything less than his all gave forth an unworldly calm.
His dedication to a cause was greater than ANY
discouragement that could come to call. He judged life not by minor moments when
things would seem to fall apart but by a total picture…he
saw life as a destiny not as a piecemeal of ups and downs.
