Worry is a
distraction. These days jobs come and go
and too many have gone not to return...so it is natural to be concerned...but
approaching every day excessively worrying you may lose your job may make you lose your health and therefore your job
which would then become a self fulfilling prophecy.
There is, of course, creative worrying...like Noah's wife
(or so the story has been told to me by a creative friend of mine) who said to
him as he gathered two of every kind, "I just wish you'd put those two
termites in a locked tin box."
Go ahead and
laugh. It's therapeutic. But then lock your worries in that tin box
with the termites. Maybe they'll eat
them up.
Seriously, what can be done...what should be done...to lessen
anxiety?
May I ask you to do something. Set yourself up to make at least one thing
you are worrying about seem really small...
...by
adoping the name Moses... and in your imagination take up the job of leading
the children of Israel out of Egypt.
I
know just thinking about it makes you dizzy but think a little more and you will
get dizzier still.
First the size
of the group. Enough to fill up half the
size of Rhode Island.
And traveling arrangements. No flights to worry about being cancelled or
freeways clogged to slow things down to a halt.
That's a plus.
But then there's that Red Sea. Wet and deep and uncooperatively not offering
a ferry service.
Shouldn't have worried. Moses God at his word and God parted the
waters. There must be a lesson here
somewhere.
Someone once said, "Life by the yard is hard. By the inch it’s a
cinch." Do that. If you absolutely must worry and are flunking
"worry shrinking" ...work harder at worrying about the real live
worries rather than all those imaginary ones.
This way you may well have left bigger worries to work on but you will
have gotten rid of a lot of the not worth the effort little ones.
Consider this "Our main business is not
to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at
hand." I love the quote. I carry it around with me and pull it out
from time to time. It is an old a time
worn friend.
"The load of tomorrow, added to that
of yesterday, carried today, makes the strongest falter." this portion of an address given to Yale
students was given by a man who followed these words to a lifetime of
successful living.
He organized the world-famous Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine. He became Regius Professor of Medicine at
Oxford-the highest honor that can be bestowed upon any medical man in the
British Empire. He was knighted by the King of England.
When he died, two huge volumes containing
1,466 pages were required to tell the story of his life.
Yet, Sir William Osler said his intimate
friends knew that his brains were "of the most mediocre character".
HIs secret to successful living? His energies were put to positive deeds
rather than wasted worrying.
The Most Reverend R.C. Trench, who
was at one time the Protestant Archbishop of Dublin, had a morbid fear of
becoming paralyzed.
One evening at a party, the lady he sat
next to at dinner heard him muttering mournfully to himself, “It’s happened at
last…total insensibility of the right limb.”
“Your Grace,” said the lady, “it may
comfort you to learn that it is my leg you are pinching!”
Sometimes we do that in life...pinch the wrong leg and from that point on
it's all downhill.
Over 100 diseases have been linked
directly to worry. So why, by worrying,
constantly be putting in an order for one of them?
May I ask you a question? "Do you ever feel bad when you feel good
because you are sure you will soon feel bad again?" That's negativity carried to the extreme and
of no value...but let me ask the question again "Do you ever feel bad when
you feel good because you are sure you will soon feel bad again?"
Do you have a PHD in worry. Can you
name a host of reasons why you have every reason to worry...probably close to
having more reason to worry than almost anyone who ever lived?
You wouldn't go that far? Good.
But some do...and to those worriers of the first order I remind again of
that preacher Paul.
This Apostle was just doing what his Lord
had told him to do and it was always getting him in worrisome trouble.
The time I would presently emphasize finds
Paul in a perilous situation. He is
chained to a Roman soldier. He is
shivering from the cold, isolated from enough food to keep him healthy, lonely
as only a prison can make one and awaiting trial before a delusional Nero who
believed he was a god.
And what was his response?
" Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it
again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is
near."
If that isn't making
lemonade out of the proverbial lemon moment then I don't know what is.
Train yourself to go on "automatically positive" when the world
is turning at least for you in the wrong direction. Train yourself to shout inwardly "Praise
the Lord. Thanksgiving for all the good
days in my life and the good people I love and who love me." Overwhelm
yourself with good thoughts so that the bad moment (even though it has come to
visit) doesn't have a chance to overwhelm you.
Tomorrow I will
write more on Anxiety. This will make 3
straight days of it...and I will address this subject often in the future
because I hear often that it is a subject needs to be addressed.
Philipplans 4:4-5
QUOTES ON WORRY
“Worry is the interest paid on trouble before it
falls due.” (AUTHOR UNKNOWN)

Lincoln had seen a house of cards about to
fall and realized how it could establish a precedent that would truly destroy
what the Founding Fathers had created.
Divided
by two, in short time it might well have become a division of three.
The
northeast, once not sure if it even wanted to be part of the original thirteen
colonies, might then have pulled out.
A
few years down the road, some state in the Confederacy, unhappy with the new uniting,
might have done the same. Bad habits
come easily and are slow to leave.
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest
theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human
works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore
the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was
doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the
midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he
distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's
'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk
out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book
for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick
compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety
transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United
States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often
expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a
Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this
faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that
Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through
the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is
very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick
makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed
them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The
Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

There
is no other organization in the world like the church. It is a breed unto itself. It is a congregation of sinners, not a
country club for saints. To become a
member you have to profess your unworthiness.

How can
we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing? How can we not be foolish little men and
women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.
Well, first we must do more than just pray. We must believe in our own prayers.

How many things have you been anxious
about that were things which you knew before you got into them were probably
going to create some problems for you?
And if you asked your doctor, or your minister, or common sense and your
God, all of them would have said, “Don’t do that.”

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY
OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON SUNDAY APRIL 15. ENTITILED
Two stores faced each other across a very
busy street. Their owners were in constant competition
with each other. One day, the owner of
one store put out a sign that read – If
you want it, we have it!
Almost immediately the other owner put out a
sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t
need it!

WHO ARE
YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
Who are you? Whose are
you?
You influence and are influenced
according to the answer you give.
Are you are the flavor of the month because
you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what? If so, consider being more independent in our
thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.
It may be easier being someone's shadow but
wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS THURSDAY APRIL 5 FROM THOUGHT ENTITLED "Who
Are You? Whose Are You?"
This is an old quote, and a romantic one
as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.”

POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING THURSDAY MARCH 29th THOUGHTS ENTITLED WHO
ARE YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
In a Peanuts
cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.
“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day of
school and I got sent to the principal’s office.
And it’s your fault!”
Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How
could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”
To which she declares, “You’re my
friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”
In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more
complicated.
