John Keble used to say, "When you are quite despondent, the best way
is to go out and do something kind to somebody."
It is impossible to always live by God's
quality of life as taught in the scriptures for all we have sinned and come
short of the glory of God.
But we can improve slowly but surely and erase
old habits by implanting new and better ones and we can pray better prayers to
undergird our leading better lives...and we can be a light more often than
subject the world to dark moods and ways of living.
So...capture deep and spiritual truths...hang them around your
neck just over your heart...carve them into the fabric of your soul...be
serious about this serious matter of getting better acquainted with your Lord.
Be
content with two steps forward and one step backwards for that is how it is
with all of us.
And
in our doing and sometimes undoing when we are committed to the Lord all kind
of good and wonderful things take place.
It
was small church with an even smaller Sunday School class. Not far away was a large church with a large
congregation that was doing great things.
But
to this small Sunday School Class one day there came a young lad who showed up
all by himself. No family brought
him. No friend. He just showed up.
Edward
Kimball, the Sunday School teacher was very pleased. An addition of one to his small group was
exciting...actually percentage wise...quite an increase.
In
talking to the youngster he found out that the young teenager knew nothing
about the Bible or Christianity.
What
to do? Talk with him. Teach him about Christ. Edward Kimball with no ministerial degree or
Sunday School academic credits. Just a
simple God fearing man who loved his Lord.
So
he walked down the street to the shoe store where the young man worked and
shoring up his courage walked in and began to tell him about Christ.
And,
as such stories are prone to do...a miracle ensued...and Dwight L. Moody
accepted Christ.
That's
right...Dwight L. Moody...who later became one of the world's greatest
evangelist...with hundreds and thousands becoming Christians because of his
witness.
Your
name is not Edward Kimball. But who
knows...who you are influencing or will influence...who knows?
When I have been in hospitals (more times
than I like to have to admit) one thing I do like is that extra oxygen they
always give me. My body likes it
too. It enlivens. It enriches.
And that's what the Holy Spirit does.
Extra oxygen for the soul. It enlivens. It enriches.
And gives us that extra moral strength to do
do what
we know is right and spit in the face of what we know is wrong..,.,AND WHAT A SATISFACTION...WHAT
A SATISFACTION INDEED.
"...And as for
you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right." (2 Th. 3:13-18)
What
is doing good? It is certainly more than
just avoiding evil."
John Wesley had his own way of
saying this:
Do all
the good you can,
By all
the means you can,
In all
the ways you can,
In all
the places you can,
At all
the times you can,
Wesley actually
called faith without works the “grand pest of Christianity.”
What did
Christ do? He preached salvation by
faith but then he also went around doing good.
Doing good not
that we might be more loved but because we love.
You would do more good if you could?
But...
She was the last of 17 children, and the first
child born free from parents who had been born as slaves.
Mary
Bethune, as she was named, picked cotton all day and no chance to learn to read
or write.
Then
an opportunity opened up for her, the chance to get an education from a church
sponsored school five walking miles from her home.
She
walked those ten round trip for 10 years.
Later she received a scholarship to attend college.
She
was not rich but she had a dream that was rich.
With only $1.50 she began teaching five girls. It was a small beginning but it was the right
thing to do...for she remembered what an education had done for her...from
these five girls there arose Bethune-Cookman College of Daytona Beach, Florida.
What is doing good? It is
certainly more than just avoiding evil."
It
is falling in love with the super source of it all, the Holy "Bible about
which one unknown believer wrote...
This Bible is the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the
doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.
Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding; its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, practice it to be holy.
It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.
It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s character.
Here paradise is restored, heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.
Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end.
It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.
Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully.
It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.
Follow its precepts and it will lead you to Calvary, to the empty tomb, to a resurrected life in Christ; yes, to glory itself, for eternity.”

A
new quote (posted OCT 23) below from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM
LINCOLN (read the rave reviews
below the quote)
Lincoln had seen a house of cards about to
fall and realized how it could establish a precedent that would truly destroy what
the Founding Fathers had created.
Divided
by two, in short time it might well have become a division of three.
The
northeast, once not sure if it even wanted to be part of the original thirteen
colonies, might then have pulled out.
A
few years down the road, some state in the Confederacy, unhappy with the new
uniting, might have done the same. Bad
habits come easily and are slow to leave.
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest
theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human
works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore
the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was
doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the
midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he
distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's
'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk
out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book
for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick
compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety
transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United
States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often
expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a
Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this
faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that
Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through
the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is
very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick
makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed
them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The
Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

There
is no other organization in the world like the church. It is a breed unto itself. It is a congregation of sinners, not a
country club for saints. To become a
member you have to profess your unworthiness.

How can
we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing? How can we not be foolish little men and
women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.
Well, first we must do more than just pray. We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY
OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON SUNDAY APRIL 15. ENTITILED
Two stores faced each other across a very
busy street. Their owners were in constant competition
with each other. One day, the owner of
one store put out a sign that read – If
you want it, we have it!
Almost immediately the other owner put out a
sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t
need it!

WHO ARE
YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
Who are you? Whose are
you?
You influence and are influenced
according to the answer you give.
Are you are the flavor of the month because
you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what? If so, consider being more independent in our
thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.
It may be easier being someone's shadow but
wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS THURSDAY APRIL 5 FROM THOUGHT ENTITLED "Who
Are You? Whose Are You?"
This is an old quote, and a romantic one
as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.”

POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING THURSDAY MARCH 29th THOUGHTS ENTITLED WHO
ARE YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
In a Peanuts
cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.
“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day
of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.
And it’s your fault!”
Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How
could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”
To which she declares, “You’re my
friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”
In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more
complicated.
