Allow me to begin todays thoughts with the following story.
Once upon a
time there was a girl who was blind and loved the Lord and His words. Therefore, despite her blindness she learned
to read by touch and spent countless hours engrossed in the Bible.
One day she
badly burned her hands and when the bandages were removed, she found she no
longer had enough of the sensitivity of touch to distinguish the characters.
Devastated he wept over her loss until
she heard about another blind girl who did not have a Bible.
On her way
over to give her precious book to the girl, with a tear in her eye, she opened
it one last time and with great tenderness kissed the pages that she had loved
so much.
To her surprise,
she carefully read "The Gospel according to St. Mark".
When is the
last time you read St Mark with your eyes?
That you take for granted. That
fill your days with color and movement.
Or read the expression on the face of a friend or a family member. Or...
Paused in the
presence of sight for the prize of insight?
When.
Blessings...how
many other such blessings do you have that you accept without daily
thanksgiving,
The hands that
allowed you on your computer to bring up these thoughts...or will soon allow
you to send your own email message.
The feet that took you to the chair you
now sit in.
And those
sounds coming through an open window and that meal you had not that long ago
that was both enjoyable and necessary for your life to continue.
And the freedom of choice that touches a
dozen avenues of your life and a dozen more and a dozen after that.
Thanksgiving is
coming up next month. Will you wait that
long to express your thanks? Or is your
"Thanksgiving mode" on hold?
Will you be
happier if you can do the math and that math is constantly adding to your
awareness that for every miserable moment there are a dozen that are not.
If you are
looking...searching....finding...more for some...less for others...but think of
those who had such sickness (Robert Louis Stevenson) and wrote through terrible
weakness or Helen Keller who was missing not just one sense but three...and
rose above to be a blazing rainbow to the world.
And the
hundreds...the thousands...the millions who have risen from the depths of
despair to make a life worthwhile and then again even more.
If what you read below does not make you
fall to your knees in a prayer of prayerful insight then you have a problem.
Today upon a bus, I saw a lovely maid with golden hair; I envied
her -- she seemed so gay, and how, I wished I were so fair; When suddenly she
rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle; she had one foot and wore a
crutch, but as she passed, a smile. Oh God, forgive me when I whine, I have two
feet -- the world is mine.
And when I stopped to buy some sweets, the lad
who served me had such charm; he seemed to radiate good cheer, his manner was
so kind and warm; I said, "It's nice to deal with you, such courtesy I
seldom find"; he turned and said, "Oh, thank you sir." And then
I saw that he was blind. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine, I have two eyes, the
world is mine.
Then, when walking down the street, I saw a
child with eyes of blue; he stood and watched the others play, it seemed he
knew not what to do; I stopped a moment, then I said, "Why don't you join
the others, dear?" He looked ahead without a word, and then I knew he
could not hear. Oh God, forgive me when I whine, I have two ears, the world is
mine.
With feet to take me where I'd go; with eyes
to see the sunsets glow, with ears to hear what I would know. I am blessed
indeed. The world is mine; oh, God, forgive me when I whine. (author unknown)
He was just A 12 year old boy named David.
He was born without an immune system. He had no desire to be
heroic. He just wanted to be well.
He underwent a bone marrow transplant in
order to correct the deficiency that had reduced his living quarters to a
plastic bubble.
For
him the outside dangerous world was a place filled with germs, bacteria and viruses. This
way they could not get to him.
He lived without the touch of one single
human being.
One day someone asked him what he would
like to do when he was finally released from his protective bubble. He replied, " I want to walk barefoot on
grass, and touch my mother's hand."
The Scottish minister Alexander Whyte was
known for his uplifting prayers and almost complete attitude of constant thanksgiving.
His reputation was that of a man who always found something for which to be grateful.
One Sunday
morning the weather was so miserable that one church member thought to himself,
"Certainly the preacher won't think of anything for which to thank the
Lord on such a wretched day like this."
Much to his surprise, however, Whyte
began by praying, "We thank Thee, O God, that it is not always like
this."
So what are
you thankful for?
I don't know
that there is a proper thanksgiving list that should always spring to the
fore...for we are all different...but we do need a list...I do believe
that...and hopefully one we can keep adding to on a regular basis.
Otherwise...well,
we get out of practice...the habit shrivels and in some even dies.
So make daily
deposits of thanksgiving so you will not one day end up with a bankrupt soul.
And remember that
if the only prayer you ever prayed were "Thank you," you would be
well on your way toward a life aimed at and in the service of the way and will of your living
Lord.

A new quote (posted OCT 11) below from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM
LINCOLN (read the rave reviews
below the quote)
"Positive,
powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation
of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."
Lt.
Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)
"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is
an extremely well written book that investigates what might be
termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very
readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and
with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'
William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and
Wild Thorn
"Wyrick has authored a wonderful
examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly
religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of
information."
Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian
minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in
support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of
Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest
theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human
works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore
the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was
doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the
midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he
distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's
'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk
out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book
for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick
compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety
transcends politics."
Dr.
Donald W. Shriver
Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics
"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham
Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history.
Should have a wide readership."
James
H. Smylie Professor
of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil
Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably
the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United
States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often
expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a
Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this
faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that
Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through
the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is
very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick
makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed
them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

Well, first we must do more than just pray. We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY
OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON SUNDAY APRIL 15. ENTITILED
Two stores faced each other across a very
busy street. Their owners were in constant competition
with each other. One day, the owner of
one store put out a sign that read – If
you want it, we have it!
Almost immediately the other owner put out a
sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t
need it!
A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY
OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON THURSDAY APRIL 13TH. ENTITILED
WHO ARE
YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
Who are you? Whose are
you?
You influence and are influenced
according to the answer you give.
Are you are the flavor of the month because
you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what? If so, consider being more independent in our
thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.
It may be easier being someone's shadow but
wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITINGS THURSDAY APRIL 5 FROM THOUGHT ENTITLED "Who
Are You? Whose Are You?"
This is an old quote, and a romantic one
as well but, nevertheless, can anyone say of you, “I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.”

POSTED ON WYRICK'S WRITING THURSDAY MARCH 29th THOUGHTS ENTITLED WHO
ARE YOU?
NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?
In a Peanuts
cartoon strip Peppermint Patty is shown talking to Charlie Brown.
“Guess what, Chuck? It’s the first day
of school and I got sent to the principal’s office.
And it’s your fault!”
Charlie Brown responds, “My fault? How
could it be my fault? Why do you say everything is my fault?”
To which she declares, “You’re my
friend, aren’t you, Chuck? You should have been a better influence on me.”
In the comics, it’s funny… but in real life it’s much more
complicated.
