Professional
complainers are consistent. They’re
unhappy with a host of things.
They fail to notice that life is so beautiful that
it needs progress reports, not failure essays.
Sure there are bad moments
and weak people and sin and mistakes, but from the cradle to the grave, life is
a long, long journey.
It is also an education.
It is also a challenge.
Its beginning is a miracle.
Its end a mystery.
And the man of faith says it is God.
I suppose one of the reasons all of us complain at least sometimes is
that it makes one feel important.
After all, we feel we have given great
thought to something and our conclusion is that if someone else is doing less
and thinking differently, then we must be doing more and thinking clearer.
And yet the strange,
wonderful, logical truth is that we never really become important until being
important really doesn’t matter anymore.
Would
you be really important?
Then be so busy praising God you have no energy left to complain about
your fellowman. And sometimes, be able
to admit that you are wrong
I remember a man sitting in front of me one day who described
himself as a person no longer able to enjoy life.
“At one time,” he
related “I loved music and reading and people.
Now I don’t even love myself. One
day I realized that I did nothing but complain about everything. However, by the time I realized it and
admitted it, it was too late. The habit
was ingrained.” We talked about his problem and he said that he would pray about
it and try to change. Not long
thereafter he moved to another city. I
don’t know whether he has found new avenues to complain about. I hope not.
I hope he has prayed for a good digestion system and for things worthy to
digest.
I hope he has prayed
for a healthy mind that keeps the good and best in sight,
a proper attitude that
sees the wrong but emphasizes the right.
I hope he no longer
whimpers, whines or gives a sigh
because he is much too
fussy about the thing called “I and Me and My.”
I hope he has prayed
for and found a sense of humor and the grace to see a joke,
to get some happiness
from life because he’s finally more patient with other folk.”

Lincoln had seen a house of cards about to
fall and realized how it could establish a precedent that would truly destroy
what the Founding Fathers had created.
