There is hardly any greater satisfaction
than a doer who can it is done.
Or
as Edmund Burke once warned, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is
that good men do nothing.”
It is doubtful
that you the reader of these words are evil.
Elsewise you would most likely be visiting this blog. I who write it and you who read are prone to
feed our minds, our hearts and our souls with spiritual food so that we might
be better people.
Then comes real life and the
temptation to take the easy road and speak of commitment but not do it. And therein, if we are not careful lies our
problem.
The
"not doing" that becomes our "undoing."
The hospital visit that we could not
find the time for. The gift to a charity
that we could not find the extra money for.
The dozen and a dozen more good deeds that got lost among the busy days
never to be found again.
The doing of
"nothing" or "not much more" is the title I gave it.
And when we major in nothingness we feel ill at ease and
rightly so for we were created to do good works. " For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to
do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." is the way
Ephesians 2:10 puts it.
Who have you
helped? What have you built? Where were
you when your spoken words were a good influence on those who were listening to
you speak? If your answer is "Nowhere
and nothing" the answer really doesn't feel quite right ...does it.
But if your answer was in the affirmative and your
influence was positive you know how you feel and how you felt the other times
you could claim "you made the word commitment alive and well."
Custom or
commitment. They both start with the
letter C.
Oscar Wilde (Irish born Novelist, Poet,
Playwright and Critic of the 1800’s wrote in his book De Profundis I took
pleasure where it pleased me, and passed on. I forgot that every little action
of the common day makes or unmakes character, and that what one has done in the
secret chamber, one has some day to cry aloud from the housetop. I ceased to be
the lord over myself. I was no longer the captain of my soul and did not know
it. I allowed pleasure to dominate me. I ended in horrible disgrace."
There is
no joy quite like having a purpose in life.
Of knowing who you are and knowing you are a person others respect and
God treasures.
To be a spiritual emotional physical drifter is to
die.
To dream a
different dream on a regular basis because you cannot will not key in on
anything is the beginning and the continuation of a wasted life.
We are each
and everyone a child of God and our choice for good or evil, right or wrong,
heaven or hell does make a difference in terms of our now and our forever.
So it behooves us to give our best rather
than fall victim to our worst.
Just remember this bit of Yogi Berra wisdom: “If
you don’t know where you’re going, you’re likely to end up someplace else.”
