Will
selfishness make you happy? Will people
love you for always wanting to get what you want to get and not care about how
you get it? When you extend your hand is
it to "get" or "to give" and does it make a difference?
When was the last time you were accused of being
"unselfish?" It's an
interesting combination of words isn't it.
So much trouble caused by husbands and wives accusing each other of
being "selfish" when oh how much BETTER the marriage would be if it
were the other way around. "I
accuse you of being unselfish dear."
And siblings doing the same..."I accuse you of being
unselfish."...and...
Are you selfish? The
following is for identity purposes only.
There is a chance that you are if...
...you take the last piece of cake without asking if anyone else
wants it.
...take complete control of the remote
control.
...your favorite picture at home is the
mirror.
...you know all the words to the song
"I DID IT MY WAY."
...you have a lifetime subscription to
SELF magazine.
Selfishness begins
to die only when a person recognizes they have the problem...only when they
realize how their mind set is...only when they realize that their attitude
toward life and what life has to offers is the following...
If I like it, it’s mine.
If I can take it away from you, it’s mine.
If I had it a while ago, it’s mine.
If I say it is mine, it’s mine.
If it looks like mine, it’s mine.
If I say I saw it first, it’s mine.
If you’re having fun with it, it’s mine.
If you lay it down, it’s mine.
If it is broken, it’s yours.
If I can take it away from you, it’s mine.
If I had it a while ago, it’s mine.
If I say it is mine, it’s mine.
If it looks like mine, it’s mine.
If I say I saw it first, it’s mine.
If you’re having fun with it, it’s mine.
If you lay it down, it’s mine.
If it is broken, it’s yours.
People do have a problem recognizing
themselves as being a selfish self centered bore...usually because they are so
busy talking about themselves they aren't giving you enough time to talk about
yourself.
Selfishness is a thief.
It steals joy from your life and throws it with the passing of every day
further and further away.
"Let
each of you look out, not only for his own interests, but for the interests of
others…" (Phillipians 2:4) is the way the Bible warns of it.
It was her 61st.
birthday party and the family threw her a party. Everyone was enjoying themselves and the mood
was festive. Someone cried out,
"Well, I guess we're going to that Italian restaurant you always enjoy so
much, mom." Everyone shook their
heads in agreement.
But
then everyone looked over at dad whose face was covered with a frown. "I'm not in the mood for Italian."
Everyone
knew what that meant. It wasn't worth
the pouting session that would follow.
So on her 61st. birthday mom and everyone else went to a Chinese restaurant.
On a
scale of 1 to 10 how selfish are you?
How selfish am I? I just graded
myself. I hope you are doing the same.
What is one of
the first things a baby does? He/she
grabs. He/she sees something. He/she wants it. He/she grabs for it and holds on tight if you
try to take it away. It never crosses
his/her mind to do otherwise.
And then there
are those who when they do grow up do not put away childish things.
Today in
America there is a problem. It is a
problem of supply and demand. Many boys
and girls who grew up having more than their parents had are now faced with
living an adult life that offers them less.
They
get married and whether he gets his camping trip or she gets her new pair of
shoes...these two possibilities clash.
There simply isn't enough money for both.
And too
often there is not enough "unselfishness" either.
Why does a thief
steal? Because he/she wants what he/she
wants and can't afford to buy it. So
he/she selfishly steals.
Why does a
good person steal joy from family and friends?
Because he/she wants what to have means someone else will not have it.
So he/she selfishly steals...takes without regret...sings "me, me,
me."
The selfish
life has a grammatical problem. Selfish
people spell I, ME and MINE in capital letters.
Selfish
people wear a sign that says "I am more important than you."
Selfish people
are great conversationalist...they are me-deep in conversations with
themselves.
So then what
can be done to this selfish goose that lays such a rotten egg?
The only
remedy for its cure is the prescription offered by the Great Physician. And it must be taken on a regular basis. LOVE for thee...with me second."
Lets put it this
way, "Stuff yourself with the power of the Lord rather than with all that
pride in yourself."
Would you be
less selfish? Convince yourself of the
truth that the happiest people are those who help others.
Would
you be less selfish? Think of people as
people and not as collateral damage?
What do I mean by that. That's
what Timothy McVeigh called all those people he blew up in Oklahoma. When we look at our fellowman as children of
our living God...really look at them that way...it becomes increasingly
difficult to be selfish.
Would
you be less selfish? Empty your heart of
false pride and overbearing ambition and there will definitely be more room for
compassionate sharing.
Would you be
less selfish? Fill your life with the
Son (sun) of God. Selfishness works
better in darkness. It feels threatened
and cannot long survive in THE LIGHT.
