GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF A BETTER YOU

Some time ago the United States public health service issued a statement in connection with the prevalence of nervous diseases and the tendency of worry to weaken and shorten life.

In this statement was the following observation, no doubt suggested by the words of Jesus: "So far as is known, no bird ever tried to build more nests than its neighbor.

No fox ever fretted because he had only one hole in which to hide.

No squirrel ever died of anxiety lest he should not lay by enough for two winters instead of one.

Would you give yourself the gift of a better more contented YOU.

There is an old Swedish proverb that reads, “Worry gives small things a big shadow.”  One thing is for sure, it can make the skin itch, the heart miss a beat and make us feel like we are carrying around an emotional elephant.  Fear is no fun.

So what can we do to lessen if not completely erase the problem?  Be honest.  Make a good habit of telling the truth.  Having to remember perfectly tomorrow the lie told today can cause great fear and ongoing anxiety.

Treat others with kindness and love.  Love casts out fear.

Work consistently and persistently at getting rid of bad habits.  There is great fear in knowing that tomorrow we will make the same dumb mistake that we habitually just made today.

Never say “never can, never will” when it comes to conquering your fears.  If you say it, it can and may well become a self-full-filling prophecy.

Wear a smile more often than a frown.  It is scary to look in the mirror each morning and see an anxiety ridden person that scares you to death.

If you are angry too often and too long, stop blaming other people for being angry.  You are the one who let yourself get angry and stay angry.  You are the one who has put fear in those around you because of your anger.

Therefore, yes, be afraid of anger because you know it is no friend to you, no friend at all.  Shakespeare put it well, The fault is not in the stars but in ourselves.”

Fifty people over the age of ninety were asked “If you had it do over again what would you do differently?”  There were many answers but two responses seemed to stand out from all the others.

I would reflect more about what I was doing and why I was doing it and if it was worth doing in the first place.

I would risk more.  The number of opportunities passed up by each person in a lifetime is saddening.  The fear of failure stops many before they even take a first step toward an opportunity.  What a terrible waste.  We live in a land of the free and the brave.  We must not let fear become our king.

BELOW QUOTE FROM SPIRITUAL; ABRAHAM LINCOLN BOOK

I also find it interesting to speculate what if he had attended regularly a large academy in his quest for knowledge rather than having sparse attendance at a small one-room school?  What if he had been born in a big house in the city rather than in a log cabin with one window and one door?  How would the size of his upbringing affect the moral size of the man?

If raised in the lap of luxury, would the sense of privilege he would therefore carry give more or less peace either to him or the nation?  Suppose his wealth had come from a Southern plantation.  If surrounded by those who indulged his every whim would his thoughts and emotions have been that much different?
