WHY PRAY?

Peter Marshall, one of the truly great preachers of the 20th century once prayed, “O Lord, forgive us for thinking that prayer is a waste of time and help us to see that without prayer our work is a waste of time.

Ask me why I pray and I will tell you I pray because I am a person with greater contentment when I daily dial the Kingdom of Heaven.  Because I have sins and I need forgiveness.  Because the world sometimes gets too much for me and when it does I think clearer when I bow my head before God and let Him show me the way.

And yes, because I remember what an old unknown philosopher once wrote, “Hunger would never have continued without food, nor breathing without air, nor intellectual life without truth, nor prayer without God.”

I pray because my moments of prayer are my most honest moments.  Because I am not enough of a fool to try to pull the wool over the eyes of God.  I pray because I cannot live without my Lord, nor do I want to try.

I pray because I know that when I pray I make the devil quake in his boots because he knows that now when he tempts me it will take two to do his tango, and one of the two now…is my Lord.”

That grand old statesman Ben Franklin understood what I am talking about.  It is why at the Continental Congress of 1787 he said, “The longer I live, the more I am convinced that if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probably that an empire, a county, a government cannot rise without His aid?”

Martin Tupper put it well when he wrote that prayer is “the tender nerve that moves the muscles of omnipotence.”

SOME QUOTES FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

Preface

This book is more than just a march down memory lane.  It is certainly not a search-and-destroy mission as are some historical efforts.  It is really a questing for an understanding of the man able to write, “He has the right to criticize who has the heart to
help.”    “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?”  “It is the duty of all nations as well as of men to owe their dependence upon the over ruling power of God.”1   “With malice toward none; with charity toward all…”
