During the Civil War, a Yankee Commodore was put in charge of a blockade on the Mississippi River with strict orders to allow no cotton to pass down this watery highway.
It was no time at all before speculators were hot in pursuit of his conscience. Knowing that many men and women have fragile consciences, they felt confident that the proper bribe would destroy any scruples he might otherwise have.
So, one afternoon they descended on him in triplicate.
Three men with pockets full to overflowing with good hard cash were absolutely sure they would be able to convince him to let their cotton-loaded barges sail on through the blockade.
He kept saying “No.” They kept raising the ante. When they had raised the price a third time he ordered them out of his cabin as he shouted, “Get out! All of you, get out! You’re getting too close to my price.”
Judas had his price - thirty pieces of silver. A modern day Judas may sell his soul for the equivalent; to receive a raise in pay or some title dear to his or her heart, or for a place in the sunny warmth of public approval.
It is important to not have a price, but it is equally as important to not let ones self test what that price might be.
Ephesians 5, 15-17
"Be Wise"
Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
