It is a long line of
likeminded folk who wait for some unnamed benevolence to drop a bucketful of
goodies in their unmoving lap.
The
Bible is full of miracles but notice they did not just happen.
Jesus said to the invalid, "Take up your bed
and walk." Before that his friends
had climbed to the roof and there cut a hole and then lowered him down. A lot of singular effort that was then met by
the blessings of the Lord.
The blind Bartemus was healed, but not until he
brought himself to the gate where Jesus on a regular basis passed by.
Lazarus was raised from the dead, but it was
Martha who went searching for the Master.
Are you proactive with your life and the process of
living? Do you do a regular study of
your habits and your deeds and tag them as good (and keep them) or tag them as
bad (and throw them away and pray they stay that way.)
How
is your thinking these days? Does that
old brain need to be cleaned out...some bitter thoughts or dirty thoughts or
unforgiving thoughts placed upon a trash heap never to be seen or smelled
again?
The world is full of pessimist who believe that
nothingness is a way of life they cannot escape and aren't particular ready or
willing to try.
Brothers
and sisters to the thoughts of Elijah seated under a Juniper tree and crying,
"The Lord has forsaken me..."
The
great God sag is alive and well for far too many.
We
all owe it to ourselves to do all we can to strengthen the muscles of our
morals and thereby strengthen our character.
The gift of life deserves better than a cursing, fussing,
raving, complaining fool...for of such behavior the bad is made only worse.
One
day in Scotland a man was playing the famous golf links of St. Andrews.
What
he did not know was how it is with a caddy there. At St. Andrews the highest grade of caddy is
somewhat of a dictator on the course.
He
gives you the club he thinks you should use and suggest the direction in which
he believes you should hit the ball.
And
so on this particular day this is what he did to this man of little knowledge
of how it was at St. Andrews.
They
had approached a dog leg hole and the man immediately began to argue with the
caddy. He wanted to use a different club
and make a different approach to the tee.
"Well
now, laddie," said the venerable caddy, "you may use whichever club
you wish and shoot in whichever direction you desire. I am only suggesting how to play in order to
win the hole."
God and the words in the Bible tell you how to gain a good
and pleasant score as you play the game of life...but you or I...if so we
foolishly chose can ignore any of the advice given...and suffer
thereby...defeat...and loss...

When you come to communion,
there are what might be called four imperatives to give it meaning. You have been given the choice; to accept all
four, or three, or two, or one, or none and just go through the motions.
There is repentance
- which allows you to use a mistake as a stepping stone instead of a stumbling
block. It is renouncing a bad yesterday
for a better tomorrow. How you define it
is your choice. Whether you repent or
not is God’s imperative.
The second of the four imperatives I hope you bring to the
communion table is overwhelming love
for God and your fellowman. Sometimes,
for some people, it is easier to say, “I am sorry I was bad” than it is to love
the neighbor you have been bad to. To
love the unlovely is a challenge, but that is exactly what partaking of
Communion is…a challenge.

into two categories. Those who have fallen and those who will fall for anything. None of us are perfect.
