It is rather sad but it is an apt description of some…I do not name a number or a percentage.
Half read books, half mowed lawns, half painted fences or houses or…, half finished projects, half lived lives.
And yes…To drift is to go but never glow. They are not Sunny Dawsey…and who was Sunny Dawsey.

He was a man I met almost 50 years ago but have never forgotten. I drove by where he used to live the other day and it was like it was almost yesterday when he spoke to the people of my church and inspired them in a way few people could.

You see, Sunny began to be affected by severe arthritis at the age of 7. By the time he was in his teens he was in a wheel chair. By the time I met him and had him come to my church to speak more than once he was completely paralyzed in an S position from the chin down.

Over and over again he would expand on the basic theme by which he lived, “I know God could make me completely well if he wanted to, but I figure this is God’s way of letting me help people, and if this is the way he wants it, it’s alright with me.”

He had little boy dreams and older boy dreams and then a nightmare came to visit. He could have given up and left all his dreams half done or undone…but that was not Sunny.

And yes it does say something to us…shouts it really…give our all to whatever it is we start and finish it right and let right govern our deeds …otherwise we choose to live in a world of “halfies” which is what I call unfinished tasks..so depressing and defeating and a terrible waste of time and opportunity.,

If anyone had a reason to give up…it was Sunny…but he was determined to give his all…even so much of his all…was gone.

Like all of us he dreamed he would make his impact on life…and he made his impact on life…because he gave all of everything he had left.

His name was Edward Gibbons.
He was an invalid who could only go to school for a few months out of a year. He was in a constant state of recovery and weakness was his daily bread.
For 23 years he worked on a book.

The name of the book was THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE.

When he finally finished it he wrote the following, “It is the night of the 27th of June, 1887 and I have just written the last line concerning the rise and fall of the city of Rome.”

He certainly is remembered for this monumental work but
he is just as well remembered as a man who started something and did not quit until he finished it.
How is your staying power recently?

The world if full of those with dreams that are giants and deeds that are midgets.

They dream of being a candle burning bright to fill the night with light.

They hardly make it to being a match that briefly burst into incandescent and then rapidly fades away.

The famous artist-philosopher, John Ruskin, once used an interesting
experiment to cull the vitally interested from the mildly curious.

He was to begin a lecture course on a certain Tuesday and on the said night in question when a rather large crowd arrived there was a notice on the door which read, “Meeting postponed, it will be held next week at the same time.” The next week about half the number showed up and there was an identical notice tacked to the door.” One more week went by with the same notice.

Finally, he stood in the doorway before a very small group of people and said,
“I think the class is sufficiently culled and winnowed to get down to work.”

Persevere. Never give up. Never quit. Beat out adversity with stick-to-itiveness and you will be one in a million…but what you have proved and improved on in spirit will be priceless.

Take a piece of wax, some meat, some sand, some clay, some wood shavings and thro them all into the fire.

Let us then see how they react.
One instantly melts, one starts frying, one hardens, one dries up and one blazes.
And yet think about it…every one of them is acted on by the same force.

Just so, under identical influences of circumstance and environment, one person becomes weaker, one becomes stronger, another withers away.

So then it seems the conclusion may be drawn that it is not always what happens in life so much as who it happens to.
Some people make mountains out of molehills and some have that majestic quality of making molehills out of mountains.

One of the hardest things to achieve, when anxiety comes to call, is that balance between uncontrolled hysteria and unrealistic self-control.

The Bible refers to it as “the peace that passeth understanding.” And this is what, when the walls come crashing down, Christ can bring. Control in the midst of uncontrol.

The cause of our anxiety may not go away. The pain may still be very real. But we are not the same person we were before we said and meant, “Here am I, Lord, take me.”

There was a sheep herder in Indiana who was in love with common sense, patience and a continuing search for understanding people. He had fine tuned these gifts in a way of life that
should have earned him a prize. But he had a problem. He was losing both sheep and sleep.

The dogs of the neighborhood had declared unqualified war on his herd and almost every morning he would find one or more sheep maimed or dead.

Instead of countering with fences, bells, lawsuits or shot-guns he buried his anger, resurrected love, patience and common sense and began to give every neighbor’s child a pet lamb and ram.
Before long his neighbors had flocks and began to keep sharp watch on their family dogs.

The sheep raiser lost no more sheep and also lost no friends.

In the 19th century Gilbert and Sullivan were the equivalent of today’s rock stars.

The comic operas they wrote captured the music world and audiences all over the world flocked to appreciate their outlandish lyrics and sprightly music.

Among their greatest and best known; H.MS. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikdao. They served up laughter and philosophy in an entertaining package and had the world in the palm of their hands.

Their talents were unbelievable and they were destined to work together in joyful harmony for the rest of their lives.

However, it was not to be.
Their fragile egos were such that soon they were standing at opposite ends of the stage so they wouldn’t have to see each other.

It all started because one time early in their years they bought a theatre and Sullivan ordered a new carpet which Gilbert thought to expensive.

They grew red in the face. Compromise was out of the question. They took it to court. What the court decision was has long been lost but how they treated each other has not.

When it was over they never spoke again.
Sullivan would write the music and mail it to Gilbert.
Gilbert would piece in the words and mail it back to Sullivan.
They never took or sought the journey of understanding.
Their pride was a demon and it took them down.
They had been friends and they forgot that it is better to lose your pride than to lose a friend because of useless pride.

The following letter was found in a baking-power can wired to the handle of an old pump that offered the only hope of drinking water on a very long and seldom-used trail across Nevada's Amargosa Desert:

"This pump is all right as of June 1932. I put a new sucker washer into it and it ought to last five years. But the washer dries out and the pump has got to be primed. Under the white rock I buried a bottle of water, out of the sun and cork end up. There's enough water in it to prime the pump, but not if you drink some first. Pour about one-fourth and let her soak to wet the leather. Then pour in the rest medium fast and pump like crazy. You'll git water. The well has never run dry. Have faith. When you git watered up, fill the bottle and put it back like you found it for the next feller. (signed) Desert Pete. P.S. Don't go drinking the water first. Prime the pump with it and you'll git all you can hold."

The little girl was playing with her blocks. She loved words and so her mother with a big smile on her face reached down and arranged some of them so they spelled out the word “good”.
Then the two of them discussed the word as they often did with words. They agreed that “good” is “good” and that both mother and daughter should try to be that for each other.

"And for others too," said the little girl.

Then the mother walked away.

In a few minutes her little girl took her by the hand and showed her how she had rearranged the letters. They now spelled “Go Do”.

And so they had another discussion of how sometimes people agree that “good” is “good” but then don’t “go and do it”.
How easy it is to make excuses or procrastinate or just plain ole rebel.

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8.

Psalm 34:14
Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Luke 6:33
And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that.
