Can we claim to be a Christian
society because we no longer engage in duels, work children 15 hours a day, or
keep slaves...or are we a pagan society sometimes practicing Christian ethics.
I
think it is fine to be committed to family.
No one would argue against this.
I
think it is fine to be committed to a good financial savings plan. Prudent financial practice is a sign of
maturity.
There
is certainly nothing wrong with being committed to rest, relation and
recreation. The
weary are not more holy than the healthy.
So then...think for a bit on this word commitment...
And think on four definite steps it should
entail...
Confession, Contrition, Reparation and Amendment.
Confession says, "I have
sinned."
Contrition says, "I am sorry."
Reparation says, "I will try to right
the wrong."
Amendment says, "I will let
yesterday's sin teach me for a better tomorrow.
"Think of man nobly, of Christ
divinely."
THAT'S COMMITMENT.
The late Alstair McLean once wrote that if we could hold to God's
promises with one-fiftieth of the faith we profess, we would shout with a song
of triumph, cry with the wind, and march as one, shoulder to shoulder, and
friend.
I have an ongoing problem with the term "church
membership."
When you commit yourself to Christ it is a
marriage more than a membership. You
join clubs, you commit yourself to a relationship through "thick and
thin...for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in
health..."
The secret to a better world is less
church membership and more committed Christ centered self discipline...a
marriage of the soul that exceeds the influence of a name upon a role.
It's all about having the sails up and the
rudder set.
Many years ago, a famous violinist who
played each week on a nationwide broadcast, received a letter from an old
mountainer deep in the hills. The letter
read, "I've got an old fiddle. It's
out of tine and I don't have anything to tune it by. Next time you play, would you mind sounding
me a good strong 'A'>
The letter appealed to the musician and
his next broadcast, he made the following announcement: "Old time, I got
your letter, Get out your old fiddle
because before I start my program, I'm going to sound for you a good strong
'A'."
That's what commitment is. Tuning in to God.
Again...and again...and again...

about that were things which you knew before you got into them were probably
going to create some problems for you?

God, all of them would have said, “Don’t to that.”
