I hope you don't have a problem with my writing about
problem solving from several different points of view...like enough about
problems...but then there is the other approach... ignore and hope they'll go
away.
My problem, of
course, is trying to be clear enough and succinct enough to keep you reading
this blog on a regular basis.
Consistency I
believe we can call it. Which leads me
to today's topic THE PROBLEM OF CONSISTENCY.
I don't know about you...but I find perfection which is what
consistency is at the very highest order impossible to achieve.
So what to do with this human problem that you
consistently find no matter how far you dig into history.
Well...let's
look at a fact...consistency and contentment walk hand
in hand. Inconsistency
leaves a trail of debris trailing behind. Inconsistent people can't be depended on and
therefore are not prone toward advancement.
Two steps forward, "I did it."
Two steps backwards "I forgot"
"I was too busy."
"I meant to...I really did."
Closing score...zero.
Daily.
Weekly. Monthly. Every now and then. Which describes your dedication to a cause or
a goal or a belief system or...
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak!
This problem with consistency is consistent in that it hits us all. Even the Apostle Paul.

That's why he wrote in Corinthians 9:27,
"But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any
means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."
And why did this bother both James as
well as Paul. Well, James describes the
problem in the following manner, " "A
double minded man is unstable in all his ways." (James 1:8)
So there we are
with our double minded thinking in two different directions along with our
attitudes and our actions...knowing full well what double thinking inconsistency
is going to get us...
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw
nigh to you.” (James 4:8) What a friend
you have in Jesus you have sung...so sing it more often...sing it when you are
prone to wander toward procrastination...call out to your heavenly Father to
come near and watch over you so you will not wander in the wrong inconsistent
direction...things of the spirit can and do move men to be able to move
mountains...consistently...be one of those people.
Instability. Do you really want to walk around with that
tag around your neck?

wasn't much of a president but he understood a well turned truth. “Nothing in
this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is
almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
Persistent consistency. There's a mental,
spiritual, emotional giant ready to grow the man who can do this
...such as
the man who failed in business 22, Ran
for Legislature--defeated 23, Again failed in business 24, Elected to
Legislature 25, sweetheart died 26, Had a nervous breakdown 27, Defeated for
Speaker 29, Defeated for Elector 31, Defeated for Congress 34, Elected to
Congress 37, Defeated for Congress 39, Defeated for Senate 46, Defeated for
Vice President 47, Defeated for senate 49, Elected President of the United
States 51,
The man?
Abraham Lincoln.
One thing is for sure...we cannot remind
ourselves too often that there are rewards for consistency and penalties for
its lack.
Aristotle was a philosopher who like everyone else must have had his moments of inconsistency but hopefully he heeded his own advice and definition, " “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

A habit.
It can be created or broken in any period of time between two months or
a year. But the longer it is entrenched
the less likely it is to succumb to an emotional, spiritual and mental breakdown.
And we both know bad habits are more
easily made and are difficult to break. And the emotional glue that holds them together, the good
ones...the bad ones...consistency.
So...if you
have a bad habit you want to get rid of or a good habit you want to form...get
a friend who will admit to the same problem and the two of you work on it
together. There is strength in unity...we both know that.
...find someone
who has succeeded where you want to succeed and ask them to be your
mentor. Most people are more than glad
and also flattered to share with what they did to succeed at whatever was their
goal...and now is yours.
And yes, once
you have a reasonable amount of ammunition...get busy using it...don't plan
yourself to death...take that first step...that's what I did on that successful
20 mile scout hike those many years ago.
I took that first step.
Having said all of this I do have a
closing prayer, "Dear Lord, help me to daily
become less inconsistent and while I am still in the learning process help my
friends and family to have patience with me. Amen"
