Abraham Lincoln
I heard a sound and it was my yesterday's
calling. It was the sound of my mother's
voice as she called me into supper and all the warmth of home fed toward me
with that oft repeated sound.
I heard the sound of my first puppy and
my first wave splashing on a sandy shore
And my memory now on fast forward raced
through all the different sounds that have influenced me for good and bad and
in between.
And some of them were my own...and some of
these sounds I have made give me pride and some give me shame...but so it is
with life and our living and our decisions...for yes we one and all are far
from perfect...and need the background of angels singing as God issues forth
with His great heavenly voice Hi great heavenly forgiveness.
And there were the voices of the leaders and leaderless. And the madmen who gained power and abused
it. And the demigods would be
quiet...they never do.
And the judgers and the judged, their voices mingling.
Of
course, there was the sound of silence...all the voices that should have spoken
out for right who were silenced by those in love with wrong.
And the ill begotten sounds of war that would have been so
much better if they had been silenced and permanently so.
Praise...and
it was a sound I have heard in churches across the land....and it was good...so
good...such a satisfying sound.
Profanity...and the foolish obscenity of it...the pollution of
it...the waste of beauty by the presence of it.
And
as from nowhere and everywhere I heard a child crying...and it was a school
yard...and a friend of mine with a deformity had been made fun of...but it was
no fun for him...and I thought of the child who did it...and I wondered...did
he grow up to do more of the same in his adult years.
"Give me liberty or give me death"...and how often
that cry his issued forth from the enslaved...and the sound of freedom is such
music to the ears of any man.
Oh
yes...I cannot name them all...nor remember them all...but I am aware of their
power...these sounds and silences in my life...and I pray to be in charge of
any sounds that I may make...and that they be governed by my Christian faith...
And the same for you...the same for you indeed.
