In some jungle areas of this world there is a plant that when eaten will satisfy the appetite, but provide absolutely no nutrition.  It is tasty and filling, but if you continue to eat it and nothing else, you will starve to death.

One tribe calls it the devil’s plant.

And this is what Isaiah is talking about and common sense would talk about.  Forget God for lesser things and one day a person ends up with a soul that looks like a basement or an attic - filled with junk.

This marvelous biblical mentor, Isaiah, is simply laying it on the line, going for the jugular vein, leaving no doubt…be careful where you sit down to sup because what you think is a feast may well be a famine in disguise.

Examples abound, but for want of a better example take a look at Karl Marx.  First he called the state God and formed a theology.

He fashioned this ideology first as a Jew, then
as a Lutheran, and finally as an atheist.

From the Hebrew prophets he extended the belief that a violent social change was inevitable.

From Christianity he took the concept of the Day of Judgment.

Then from his atheism he decided that it would be man that would bring about the Day of Judgment.
And the results of all of this?  800 million people lived in earthly hell for a long, long while.

     Another example.

Time Magazine called it the era of “The Flapper and the Flask.

It was the 1920’s in America and people stopped looking up to God.  Instead they looked up to United States Steel Co. and General Motors.  Wall Street became the God of all good things.  America was a joy train that led to everywhere.  Nothing could stop it.  And then something did.  Black Friday, 1929.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

The Psalmist puts it well, “(Man’s) inward thought is that (his) house shall continue forever, (this) dwelling place to all generations:  (he) calls his lands after (his) (own) name.  (Psalm 49:11)

I like the way a man named Matthew Henry put it, “There is no little sin because there is no little God to sin against.
THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“A book superior in style and content)

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”
Do you know that five hundred and fifty-five feet above the ground, there sits on top of the Washington Monument an aluminum cap upon which is etched the phrase Laus Deo?  What difference does it make? From this lofty height overlooking sixty-nine square miles of the District of Columbia, it sends out the message Praise be to God.  Would you prefer to change the writings on the 12th landing of its 898 monument steps, a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore?  What of the memorial on the 20th step presented by Chinese Christians?  No one argued against having Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6 being engraved on the 24th.  School children from New York and Philadelphia had suggested this and it was accepted as a splendid idea.  Is there any significance that when the cornerstone was laid in 1848 a Holy Bible was put there by the Bible Society?  There could, of course, have been a book on atheism or no religious book at all, but not if the leaders at that time had not truly believed that this was a “nation under God.
Our 16th president built on such cornerstones, as well as the personal cornerstones of men such as George Washington who wrote, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.5  Then there was Thomas Jefferson who, before he was Chief Executive, made sure God was part of the Declaration of Independence.  His request was unanimously accepted on July 4, 1776.  Yet another of the Founding Fathers, still to be Commander-in-Chief, John Adams, wrote, “Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.6

QUOTES FROM
SIXTY PL
US AND NOT HOLDING
(Serialization of One of Neil’s book that can be found on his other blog Wyrick’s Writings)

I almost drowned once. It is a terrifying experience. One gets very used to breathing. I had taught swimming in summer camp. Passed the Red Cross Life Saving course. Water-skied 50 miles an hour. Now I found I could not even stand to have the water flow over my face when I took a shower.

So I had two choices. Give in to my fear or fight it.

I fought it. Stuck my head in a few inches of water in a basin for five seconds, then ten and finally a minute. I kept working on my private demon until one day, six month later, I was behind a ski boat with ski rope in hand. I was filled with panic, not just fear. I skied anyway. I fell and did not drown. I began to overcome the anxiety.

I refused to have a love affair with fear that could have become a permanent downer. Did I completely conquer my fear? No. Was I better off than if I had given in? Definitely.

----- ------ ---------- A number of years ago two scientists conducted an experiment with a sheep. They tied a piece of wire around the leg of a normal sheep in the midst of other sheep. Then at regular intervals they would send an electric shock through the wire making the leg twitch. The sheep’s behavior remained normal. He ate well, slept well, acted quite nicely, twitching appendage and all. Then the scientists added another factor.

They began to ring a bell ten seconds before they administered the shock. Within a very short period of time the sheep began to demonstrate all the symptoms of severe anxiety neurosis. His eating habits went from bad to worse. He couldn't sleep. He took to avoiding the other sheep. He became highly nervous and agitated.

It is the same with all the people who every day promise themselves it is going to be a bad day, and then work very hard at making their prophecy come true.

Indeed, at any gathering, folk would more often than not share what they considered medical tidbits: steal a dishrag - kill a wart, skip a row when you plant and there’ll be a death in the family or if a horse breathes on your child it’ll get whooping cough.

As late as 1859, if a doctor-to-be attended medical school at all, he had covered the entire store of existing medical lore in one year.
