A SOUL GIFT JUST AWAITIN'

An old sea captain died, and when they were cleaning out his cabin they found his well-worn Bible with the following words penned on the fly leaf,

Oh, Lord, send me anywhere,
Only
go with me.
Put any burden on me,
Only sustain me.
Sever any earthly tie,
Save that which binds my heart to Thee.

He had simply written what we all should write on the manuscript of our lives.
To never forget that God gives us eyes to appreciate the universe, but He has a greater gift for our immortal soul.

Or, as one philosopher put it, “Any man can make a success of life on the outside, provided he’s all right on the inside.”

Indeed, 2nd Timothy 2:15 is a challenge to leave the world of Oopsism and to then. . . . Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

THE DUAL CHALLENGES OF FAITH ...BUILDING AND EXTENDING

Do you spend so much time working on your faith you have no time or energy left to work for your faith?

BELOW is YOUR NEW "ONE A DAY YOUR SPIRITUAL VITAMIN" for this Wednesday.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SAY OOPS ONCE TOO OFTEN? (Continuing the series on oopisms)

In a mission school one little boy daily caused a great deal of trouble.

He broke
all the rules and no one could reason with him.

His language was foul. His attitude was one of no remorse for anything he said or did.

Finally, one day one of the staff called him into his office and said, “I’m not happy with how you’ve been acting.” And as he spoke he rolled up his sleeve, picked up a needle and said, “Because of the way you’ve been behaving I’m going to stick this needle in my arm.”

The little boy looked more frightened by the moment. Then he began to cry and said, ”Don’t do that. Please don’t do that. It will hurt you.”

“No more than how you have been behaving has hurt me,” came back the reply.

Then he thrust the needle deep. As the blood began to flow the little boy threw himself into the teacher’s arms, and weeping said, “I didn’t know how much you loved me. Please forgive me. Please forgive me.”

Over 2000 years ago, blood was shed upon a cross to show how much Jesus loved us. To wipe away the sins and Oopsisms of our lives.

Think about it. As little children we blamed rocks when we tripped over them and fell, and trees when we fell out of them.

But we are adults now, and it is time to put away such childish ways. Whether we blame impersonal objects or other people, it’s time to grow up. To be spiritually matured, seeking God and finding a Father.

Sometimes when we say Oops it’s nothing to get excited about. Maybe we only dropped a dish, or slammed a door. But other times it is something to get bothered about. Something to care about. Something that deserves more than an Oops. What it then deserves is the use of a good set of oars.

Yes, that’s what we need on the sea of life, otherwise we drift and drift and keep on drifting until one day we hear a mighty roar. And the noise is the roar of a destructive waterfall. We have drifted without decision or determination.

Now we have said Oops once too often.

One day, a little girl and her father, who was not a religious man, were walking by a huge cathedral. Looking up the little girl pointed to the cross high atop its steeple and asked, “Daddy, why is there a big plus sign on top of that building?”

Unfortunately the cross isn’t a plus to everyone.

To some it is
a nothing. They consider God’s words empty promises.

But are the promises He gave us worth any less because some refuse to take them?

Of course not, for fools abound.

When my daughter, Joy, was still a child, she had a playmate who was always changing the rules of whatever games they were playing. And she always changed the rules to her advantage so, of course, she always won. She’s a grown woman today, and I imagine she’s still doing the same.

Oopsism people do that. Oops,
they think, I don’t like the way this is working out so I think I’ll change the rules. Moral rules. Financial rules. Political rules. Any rules. That way, the person doesn’t have to change, the rules have been changed instead.

If there is a cure for Oopsism it is taking God seriously.

It is not casually thinking after an accident or an incident, well, there’s nothing I can do about it. And besides it wasn’t my fault. Fate is against me…. My fellowman is against me…. My human nature is against me. . . People just don’t understand me.

No, if there is a cure for Oopsism it is seeking God with the same intensity that the unbeliever denies Him.

It is certainly not committing the ultimate sin of indifference. It is rather letting Christ make a difference.

It is admitting with heart, mind and soul that Christianity needs moral giants, not pigmies who squirm a little and then go on their merry way.

A governor named Felix once said to the Apostle Paul, “When I have a convenient season I will call for thee.”

But it never was convenient to call for Paul. It never was convenient to learn more about Christ and then put Christ’s teaching into practice. “Oops,” said Felix, “I meant to do something about it, but I never got around to it.”

The devil loves that kind of response. When human beings use the excuse that something was inconvenient and that’s why they didn’t do it, the devil literally dances a jig. Indeed, more good deeds and noble ideas have died on the vine because of this one excuse than almost any other reason that can be named.

It is inconvenient to care.

It is inconvenient to accept blame.

It is inconvenient to have to do something about something.

Saying oops is easier and often much more convenient. And “Oops! I made a boo boo,” really doesn’t sound nearly as bad as, “I just committed a sin.”

What if Joseph of Arimathea had not gone to Pontius Pilate and begged the body of Jesus – because of the inconvenience. And instead had later said, “Oops, there I go again with my procrastination.”

What if Paul had not gone out on his missionary journey because of the inconvenience and had instead later said, “Oops there I go again with my lack of resolve.”

What if Jesus, with all of His humanity side showing, had stayed in Nazareth instead of moving out to preach and had later said, “Oops, there I go again ignoring God’s will.”

Remember the Priest and the Levite who passed by the wounded man because, after all, it was inconvenient to stop and help him?

I always tell new Christians that if they are looking for a convenient faith, then look somewhere else besides Christianity.

There is nothing convenient about a faith that tells us to love our enemies, to control our anger, to give our money, to practice humility and perform the inconvenient.

God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self
-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)

Love they neighbor as thyself,” proclaimed Christ. And too many reply, “I will – just as soon  sue them for all they’re worth.”

“Oops,” cries the pregnant teenager. “I should have had a mother who loved me better and taught me more.”

“Oops,” explains the high school dropout, “I should have
been provided with better teachers.”

“Oops,” cries the businessperson who had just stretched the truth to make an extra buck.

Oops is an after thought. An inner lying machine that lets us recycle and rewrite an event that we would prefer to forget. And every time it happens I think I hear Jesus saying, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." - Ps. 1:1.

Have you ever stopped to think that when the Mississippi River floods it is really not so much doing a bad thing as it is doing a memory thing.

Engineers, a long time ago,
straightened it out in many places to make way for farms and the adjoining farm houses. And it works, or at least most of the time it works.

That is until it rains too much.

Then the Mississippi River starts remembering. Remembering where it used to go and what do you know, memory takes over.

One thing is for sure, good memories need to be preserved just like bad memories need to be used as teachers and then not agonized over.

I learned just the other day that in parts of Atlanta they no longer teach to high schoolers history about anything that happened before 1900.

As if nothing important, like founding this nation ever happened, or the Civil War to preserve this nation ever happened, or the years of my father who was born in 1890 ever happened.

Being absent minded is frustrating. Forgetting to teach yesteryears on purpose so there is no memory of them is downright sinful.

How does that old saying go? Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. If no one is taught history, they just keep on making the same mistakes over and over again.

I sit down inside my Memory Factory from time to time and bring up good memories to be thankful for.

They do my insides good.

I remember a first grade teacher who every year until I left elementary school would come to our new class and tell a story. Usually a funny little story - always a story to teach a lesson.

I was born in the flat lands so I remember the first time I saw a mountain, and it was love at first sight.

I remember my first real friendship and the first time someone went out of their way to help me.

I remember mother and daddy sacrificing so I could have all kind of educational opportunities.

Oh, the list is long and sometime bad memories intrude while I’m at it, but when that happens, yes I try to learn from them.

Have you ever thought of the Disciples as walking memory factories?

They were, you know.

Remembering and sharing and teaching about this Son of God they met and followed and knew was raised from the dead.

Remembered all the good things He did and all the good things he said, all the healing and helping, and couldn’t shut up about it.

That is what evangelism is all about, isn’t it? Remembering with a capital R and then sharing.

Mat 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

WE ARE ALL PICTURE PAINTERS

My maternal grandmother was an artist.

Indeed, I have hanging on a wall at home two pictures she painted that are obviously of the same place but painted in a different mood and with differing landscape changes.

The point I would make is that all painters paint not only
from what they see but what they also have seen and experienced in the past. And everyone of you is a painter, even if it is only pictures you paint on your mind.

Good memories.

Bad memories.

And remember, as a parent or a grandparent you are helping your children and grandchildren in the painting of whatever pictures their memory factories produce.

This is proven all the time by little children who draw terrible pictures that show death and destruction with the color of blood predominating. Not just what is in front of their eyes but what they remember!

The memories of most people of their childhood would not cause bad and bloody pictures to be painted, but then how many good pictures would they inspire? How many indifferent, in-between pictures?

We are art teachers I guess is what I am saying, and so when Jesus says, “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and mind and strength and soul and love thy neighbor as thyself” he is really giving instructions on how to help people paint better pictures, if not on canvas, at least on their minds.

James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
