How important is faithfulness in prayer?

Dr. Wilbur Chapman often told of his experience when, as a young man, he went to become pastor of a church in Philadelphia.

After his first sermon, an old gentleman said to him, "You're pretty young to be pastor of this church. But you preach the Gospel, and I'm going to help you all I can."

Dr. Chapman thought, "Here's a crank." But the man continued: "I'm going to pray for you that you may have the Holy Spirit's power upon you. Two others have covenanted to join with me in prayer for you."

Dr. Chapman said, "I didn't feel so bad when I learned he was going to pray for me.

The 3 became 10, the 10 became 20, and 20 became 50, the 50 became 200 who met before every service to pray that the Holy Spirit might come upon me.

I always went into my pulpit feeling that I would have the anointing in answer to the prayers of those who had faithfully prayed for me.

It was a joy to preach!

The result was that we received 1,100 into our church by conversion

in three years, 600 of whom were men.

It was the fruit of the Holy spirit in answer to prayer!"

When you pray...Believe that

God isn't absent-minded."

       And when you pray...pray from a firm and growing faith in prayer because it's foolish to pray and then make your prayer an anxiety center.

        Pray your prayer. Carry close to your heart and soul your need.

       Believe that God hears and answers. Then get on with the business of living. In simple terms, trust in the Lord, and then act like it.

     WHEN YOU PRAY... "Know the God you Pray to."

    A young, cynical medical intern; known for his atheism, once mockingly asked the hospital chaplain to pray that he might get some money as he was very low on funds.

     The chaplain replied, "If you had just met  the chief surgeon, would you have asked him for money!" Well no"  came back the reply, "I'd wait until I knew him better"

    "Exactly," answered the chaplain and walked away. In short, don't play hookey from school You don't ever graduate when it comes to learning about your God.      Yes, read the Bible, but to keep God from being an after thought, also look up to the sky on a star..filled night with gratitude in your heart.

     Try to explain God to youngsters with eager wonder in their eyes. Walk the mountaintops of another's soul by reading religious books or studying his

religious art.

     WHEN YOU PRAY..."Be obediently patient." Undergird your attitude by praying, "In thy own time, Lord, not mine. Your view from eternity is better than my view from a clock.

      WHEN YOU PRAY...Don't just plead.  Make promises.  Be willing to back up your prayer with activity. God  puts limits on himself, and you are that limit.

       Don't pray to God to put love in human hearts and then go out and ~practice prejudice.

       Don't pray that the Church have an impact on society and then not be a part of having that impact.

       Don't pray for God to give you a heavenly home and then daily treat your husband, wife, or children like hell.       In one of Lloyd Douglas's novels, acharacter named Dean Harcourtsays to a troubled man, "Don't worry so much right now about believing in God; just conduct yourself in such a way that God can believe in you!"

      WHEN YOU PRAY ...

      Don't pray idle prayers. Be intense.

       A soft and sloppy prayer is an insult to God's integrity and to yours.

       A halfhearted prayer is like a farmer pointing at the seed in the barn and never going out to till and plant. Your prayers deserve intensity, for you are dealing with a power that can change the world.

      Consider the Lord's prayer that you have prayed for years, "Our Father, which art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done."    When thus you pray, you cry out unto the Universe that you are tired of earthly kingdoms where the wise arc ruled by fools, where the fields that should be rich with harvest are raped by war, where good people are destroyed by bad.

      So then...pray...that the world be ruled by a kingdom that will let us live t together as sisters and brothers.    
 Where . no one tries to be a god. Where the law of love makes needless any human laws. It is, indeed, a prayer bigger than life, but sometimes we need that.

I know there is nothing too great or too small to be -brought to God in prayer. Martin Tupper put it

well when he wrote that prayer is "the tender nerve that moves the muscles of omnipotence."

That grand old man of the Revolution Ben Franklin was a firm believer in prayer. "The longer 1 live, tt he once said at a meeting of the Continental Congress of 1787. "the more I am convinced that if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire cannot rise without His aid?"                    

Prayer is the glue that holds one's faith together.              It is the compass that points a clear and steady course toward the gates of heaven and away from the gates of hell.

        How often have you had someone say, "I tried to get you on the telephone, but the line was busy."  

                

 God's line is never busy. He's always home.         

Sometimes our sender may be short-circuited.    

Sometimes we make a perfunctory dial or two.  

Sometimes we may be out of practice.

 But from our opening "Dear Lord" to our closing "amen" he is always there and aware.

Dr. Helen Roseveare, missionary to Zaire, told the following story. "A mother at our mission station died after giving birth to a premature baby. We tried to improvise an incubator to keep the infant alive, but the only hot water bottle we had was beyond repair.

        So we asked the children to pray for the baby and for her sister. One of the girls responded. 'Dear God, please send a hot water bottle today. Tomorrow will be too late because by then the baby will be dead. And dear Lord, send a doll for the sister so she won't feel so lonely.'

        That afternoon a large package arrived from England.

        The children watched eagerly as we opened it. Much to their surprise, under some clothing was a hot water bottle! Immediately the girl who had prayed so earnestly started to dig deeper, exclaiming, 'If God sent that, I'm sure He also sent a doll!'

        And she was right!

         The heavenly Father knew in advance of that child's sincere requests, and 5 months earlier He had led a ladies' group to include both of those specific articles."

        If I were asked to explain why it is I pray, I would respond, "Because both want and need a daily conversation with my G0D."( know my sins and have need of forgiveness.

       I know the world some· times gets too much for me and that, when it does, common sense takes me to my knees. I know it seems to me a large dose of foolishness to attempt the art of living alone, because our capacity for pride is ridiculous and our need for some kind of guidance is obvious.

       I know that too often one turns to God as a last resort when the better wisdom would be to remember him as a first response.

     I have long believed that it is better to practice prayer from the day of induction than to wait for the foxhole.

     I have long believed it is better to learn how to pray when you can still dance a jig than have to take a how-to crash course when you have one foot in the grave.

     I believe, as someone once said, that "hunger would never have continued without food, nor breathing without air, nor intellectual life without truth, nor prayer without God."

     In a church in Kentucky, an especially verbal and boisterous child was being hurried out, slung under his irate father's arm.

      No one in the congregation so much as raised an eyebrow--until the child captured everyone's attention by crying out in a charming Southern accent, "Ya'll pray for me now!"
