A minister one day said, “The world can be saved from chaos by worship.”  At first hearing, without his definition of worship, this sounds like a sanctified pipe dream.        But listen to the definition.  “When you truly worship, you quicken your conscience with the holiness of God, you feed your mind with the truth of God, you open your heart to the love of God and you devote your will to the purpose of God.”  (anonymous)

 When you do this you knock one whale of a big hole in whatever darkness you may be having to endure.

How did John Oxenham put it?

Not for one single day

Can I discern my way

But this I sure know…

Who gives the day,

Will show the day,

So I securely go.”

The Bible is full of lamps to knock holes in the darkness.  Deuteronomy 8:3  “Man doth not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

One evening a little boy was looking out the window at the gathering darkness.  It was before the discovery of how to utilize electricity and so an old lamp lighter was moving from pole to pole. 

His mother called to her son unusually quiet and asked, “What are you doing dear?”  “Oh, mother,” he replied, “just watching a man poke holes in the darkness.”

He can do that you know, your Christ and mine.  In the midst of grief bring His special light to comfort.  When you are frightened of the dark help to make you more strong. 

Lead you to aspire to higher things and perspire for better things.  Substitute the power of prayer for the shrug of a shoulder.

Things aren’t always good. 

Things aren’t always kind. 

Sometimes things are just pure hell. 

Which is why at such times you need , pure heaven, pure perfection, pure understanding and the pure power of the peace that passeth understanding.

          Are your prayers fluent in your mouth and mind?

          Things looked bleak for the children of George Muller's orphanage at Ashley Downs in England.

          It was time for breakfast, and there was no food. A small girl whose father was a close friend of Muller was visiting in the home.      Muller took her hand and said, "Come and see what our Father will do."                 

          In the dining room, long tables were set with empty plates and empty mugs.           Not only was there no food in the kitchen, but there was no money in the home's account.

           Muller prayed, "Dear Father, we thank Thee for what Thou art going to give us to eat."

          Immediately, they heard a knock at the door. When they opened it, there stood the local baker.

          "Mr. Muller," he said, "I couldn't sleep last night. Somehow I felt you had no bread for breakfast, so I got up at 2 o'clock and baked fresh bread. Here it is."

          Muller thanked him and gave praise to God.

          Soon, a second knock was heard. It was the milkman. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage.

          He said he would like to give the children the milk so he could empty the cart and repair it.

          Sheryl Crow is a singer, not a preacher, but when she sings her song “Light In Your Eyes” she nevertheless preaches a sermon.     Perhaps you have heard it, even sung it to yourself. 

          Whether yes or no, it goes, “You gotta talk to the One who made you.  Talk to the One who understands.  Talk to the One who gave you.  All the light in your eyes.”

          It is no small thing, this sometimes gentle - sometimes agonizing cry from our immortal souls.

           This ability to be able to talk with God anytime we want is much more than a long distance call, it is a call completely unlimited by either space or time. 

          It has about it the touch of mortality, for we are mortal when we do it.

           It has about it the touch of immortality for part of knowing God is that communication with Him is now and evermore shall be. 

          It is about that One who does not slam His door in our face for as Sheryl sings in her song, “Talk to the One who understands.”

I AM CHRISTMAS

Take the year 1809. The international scene was tumultuous. Napoleon was sweeping through Austria; blood was flowing freely. Nobody then cared about babies. But the world was overlooking some terribly significant births.

For example, William Gladstone was born that year. He was destined to become one of England's finest statesman.

That same year, Alfred Tennyson was born to an obscure minister and his wife. The child would one day greatly affect the literary world in a marked manner.

On the American continent, Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

And not far away in Boston, Edgar Allan Poe began his eventful, albeit tragic, life.

It was also in that same year that a physician named Darwin and his wife named their child Charles Robert.

And that same year produced the cries of a newborn infant in a rugged log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. The baby's name? Abraham Lincoln.

If there had been news broadcasts at that time, I'm certain these words would have been heard: "The destiny of the world is being shaped on an Austrian battlefield today."

But history was actually being shaped in the cradles of England and America.

Similarly and to an infinitely greater degree, everyone thought taxation was the big news-- but no...the eternal angel announced news of the day...was that Jesus was born.  I am Christmas. I am the wide eyes of a child at break of Christmas Day; I am the somber look of an old man's memory; I am the holy look of Christ's worshipers in prayer; I am the glad, gay cry of the carolers in the winter night.

I am Christmas. I have looked on the first star of Bethlehem, I have watched the ages pass and Christmas change. I saw, on the first Christmas eve, three wise men; I felt the presence of shepherds in their awe; I perceived the Christ child in his crib.

 I am Christmas. I have gathered many symbols around about me. I have my fir tree from the pages of German time, I have my yuletide from Jol in Iceland, I have my jolly old Saint Nick from the land of the dikes, I have my mistletoe from Celtic Britain, I have America's particular gift of commercialization; I have the story of the Nativity from that book so close to men of all nations-the Bible.

I am that bright and shining joy that celebrates an event that reminds us our God is a God who loved us and loves us and always will love us...and when angels celebrate a birth by filling the heavens with song...that just underlines the majesty of it all.

Is There Really A God??

          It hangs there, an infinite miracle, a rotating sphere created by an infinite mind sending it's message to finate man...

          93 million miles from where you sit, a heavenly evangelist...the sun... shouts to your soul...THERE IS A GOD!

          Not by chance is it so perfectly positioned that were it a few degrees closer we would be burned to a crisp...or a few degrees further away the earth would be a frozen impossibility for life.

           The axis of our earth tilted at a perfect 23 degree angle...with an emphasis on the word PERFECT.

And the miracle continues in the pull of the moon to control tides to constantly consistently cleanse the swelling ocean.
          And those stars that filled the first Christmas night, the same stars the wisemen walked beneath...and wise men and women today walk beneath...recognizing a Savior child...

           The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God...

          But the wiseman has a...

          heart that beats with the stabilizing power of God is more pure as is the soul more strong when it has taken the prescription of prayer.

           A man is only half of what he could otherwise be (if he is that much) unless he seeks and finds the worthiness of his creator. 

          God is living water to the roots system of our personality.  He feeds this need, if we will but let him until we are a tree of strength and sturdiness living tall and sun crowned above the crowd.

          So give God a chance.  Flex the muscles of your better being and be an horizon who gladly welcomes the rising warmth of the presence of one more day with God. 

          Court habits that have heart in them; do something good in secret, break a bad deed by crushing it under a better deed. 

          Don’t just pray for miracles.  Pray to become one.

Below is the “Prayer of Repentance” that SHOOK the nation when Joe Wright prayed it

before the Kansas State House on January 23, 1996.

It was subsequently featured by Paul Harvey on his national radio program and

continues to resonate with many around the country.

“Heavenly Father,

       We come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your directions and

guidance.

       We know Your Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good’, but that’s exactly

what we have done.

       We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.

       We confess that:

We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it moral pluralism;

       We have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism;

       We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle;

       We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;

       We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation;

       We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;

       We have killed our unborn and called it choice;

       We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;

       We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem;

       We have abused power and called it political savvy;

       We have coveted our neighbors’ possessions and called it ambition;

       We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of

expression;

       We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it

enlightenment.

       Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some

wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.

       Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people

of Kansas, and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great state.

       Grant them Your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center

of Your will.

       I ask it in the name of your son, the Living Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

When the worst that can happen to you does, the best of God is but waiting for your prayer. 

          There is no pain so deep, no problem so difficult, no day so unyielding, that the power of your Father cannot touch your troubled heart with peace. 

          Your God has enough compassion to flood you with it, engulf you with it, overwhelm you with it.  He stands at the door of your need and simply says, “I am here, my child; let me enter in.  I am here.”

          You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving.  Thanks for sharing these thoughts with others

RE-EVALUATE AND WHY

 It will date you, of course, but do you remember the cartoonist Al Capp and his cartoon strip Li’l Abner?  Remember the character named Joe Pssst who carried around his own little rain cloud wherever he went? 

          The Shakespeare syndrome I call it.  Remember Hamlet?  He must have been a jolly companion to have around all day since the best description of life he could come up with was that it was, “stale, flat and unprofitable.”

          Several decades ago, a scientific survey at the University of Wisconsin revealed that professors who had been teaching for 20 years were no better than some teaching only two or three years.        But those who, every few years returned to college for refresher courses and to study new techniques, improved.         Those who didn’t just stagnated. 

          That’s why it is so important to put God on your calendar and keep Him there. 

          Even a man or woman “born again” needs a daily rebirth, a daily re-evaluation of habits, a daily upgrading, a daily analysis of yesterday’s happenings.

          We can change for the better but not if we keep tripping over the same old errors.
