A Candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would help us remember who Christmas is really about.

          So he made a Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy.

           White to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus. Hard candy to symbolize the solid rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God.

          The candymaker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the name of Jesus.

           It also represented the staff of the "Good Shepherd". The candymaker then included red stripes.

          He used three small stripes and a large red stripe to represent the suffering Christ endured at the end of his life. The candy became known as a Candy Cane

What money cannot buy…what argument cannot win…what pride will never find…this is God. 

          Down every valley with its beauty…up every alley with its filth…walks God.

           What he sees may make Him weep but still he marches on.   Seeking the high and mighty whose pride is a stinking thing when it is no longer mere confidence.   

          Seeking the low and the degraded who once as babes knew innocence and then let time be an enemy rather than a friend.

          No one is crossed off of his list because there was a cross.  No one who denies him has taken away the privilege of a changed mind and a dedicated soul. 

          God is patient…oh so patient…and there are many who eventually prove his patience was not a wasted thing.

So thank you forgiving loving father...this prayer we raise to the heavens...for the gift of our Savior Jesus...a Christmas prayer for His birther, His life...His resurrection ant what it means....

During his days as guest lecturer at Calvin Seminary, R.B. Kuiper once used the following illustration of God's sovereignty and human responsibility: "I liken them to two ropes going through two holes in the ceiling and over a pulley above.

 If I wish to support myself by them, I must cling to them both.

If I cling only to one and not the other, I go down."

Who is this God?

He is not the sun or moon or one large star hovering in the sky. 

          To believe this is to argue that you and I are an eye that sees or one of our legs upon which we stand.  

          Lose either and we still are who we were. 

          Limitlessness…there is the beginning of the understanding of who God is.

          Our omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient God knows no boundaries.

           Anything thought less than this is a lesser thought.

          He is not something that can be carved from wood or shaped from stone.

           The Bible is full of idolatry and how the prophets fought the foolishness of it. 

          And yes, many folk have worshipped money, carved and shaped and offering great promise and prizes…and other such idols made by man…it has happened and it will happen again.

Who is God? 

          “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”  (John 17:3)

            Her name was “Little Annie” and she was completely, overwhelmingly impossible-to-cure insane.  So they put her in a tiny cage and left her there.  Sometimes she would scream the whole night through.  Often, if anyone entered her cage she would attack them like a wild animal. 

Then a retired nurse heard about her and decided to try to get through to her.  Each day she would carry her own lunch to just outside Little Annie’s cage and simply sit there and eat.  She felt that her presence sent the message that she cared, that someone really cared.  Then she began to leave a brownie close enough to the cage that Annie could reach it.   Annie continued to completely ignore her, but the next day when she returned, the brownie would be gone.

            Soon the doctors began to notice a change in Annie.  They allowed her to be taken out of the cage and then to be transferred upstairs.  She got better and then better still.  Finally she was able to go home.  Love and first class, big-time hope had done its job.

Can you...will you give the gift below to someone...

          If you have read the novel, Les Miserables, or seen the play, you may remember Jean Valjean spent 19 years in prison for stealing bread.          

          And then almost earned a free pass back to jail for stealing silverware from a Bishop.

           The only thing that saved him this time was that the Bishop felt the soul of Jean Valjean was worth more than the silver, so he forgave and refused to press charges. 

          That act of mercy created a transformation – the thief was now forced to become the man the Bishop saw in him. 

          Forced, by the power of forgiveness, to reconcile with God and humanity.

          And yes this is a gift you can give…to someone who feels they do not deserve your forgiveness or believes they do…either way, nothing will make the angels in heaven sing with more gusto than you a human being taking away the terrible weight of guilt from another human being.

Ephesians 5:1-2

 Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.

          I doubt that this very morning you lept out of bed because you couldn’t wait for the opportunity to make God unhappy. 

          It is most unlikely you have a list of sins you want to accomplish for the sole purpose of making God angry and dissatisfied.

          We both know that when you make God smile you are more likely to have an extra dose of that peace that passeth understanding.

          So start out by capitalizing and underlining Christ commandments to love. 

          Will this make God smile?  Yes, as when you hate such hate will make God frown.

          Obedience.  God is a Father, our heavenly Fathers are pleased when their children listen to them and follow them and as Ephesians says, “Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents.”

          Read the Bible and it makes it abundantly clear that God exhibits all the emotions; he grieves, he rejoices, he exhibits sympathy and empathy, he shows compassion.

          He was an eight year old and he had just broken his arm.

          As they came out of the doctor’s office, his arm all plastered and hanging from a sling he looked up at his mother and said,” I hope this works.  It’s one of my favorite arms.”

          And we sin and make mistakes and break commandments and God, the heavenly physician,  keeps putting us back together and loving us because we are one of his favorite people; in favor enough to send his Son down to earth to save us from ourselves.

          And it pleases him to do so…and even though he weeps…he also smiles when he sees us repenting and working and praying toward improvement.

          Let me share some words from Hebrews 11:6 because they are a key to God’s happiness and to our own.

          “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

          To make it short and to the point, God isn’t terribly happy when we ignore or put him on the back burner or second or third in line of someone we want to talk to and follow.

          Then there is John 14:15.  It certainly doesn’t beat around the bush, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”

Go out today and do something you haven’t done in a long time, if ever. 

          Read at least fifty lines from the lips of your Lord. 

          Pray at least five minutes for others without one prayer for yourself. 

          Call some enemy and try to make he or she a friend.

           Forget and forgive some hurt that has festered in your soul, making you and the recipient two miserable people. 

          Think on someone you dislike and try to write down about them at least two good points.

          Then look at a leaf and study its symmetry. 

          Hold a flower close and let your eyes move along each intricate, tiny pattern. 

          The world is caught up in too much hate, and for all our answers the basic answer must come from ever warmer hearts, more beautiful lives and seeing things through a soul that is busy acquiring 20/20 vision.

PATIENCE

          Some parents on the East coast received a telephone call from their son during the Korean War.

          They were thrilled, because they hadn’t heard from him for many months.

          He said he was in San Francisco on his way home.
"Mom, I just wanted to let you know that I’m bringing a buddy home with me," he said. "he got hurt pretty bad, and he only has one eye, one arm, and one leg. I’d sure like him to live with us."

          Sure, son," his mother replied. "He sounds like a brave man. We can find room for him for a while."

          "Mom, you don’t understand. I want him to come live with us."

          "Well, OK," she finally said. "We could try for six months or so."

          "No, Mom, I want him to stay always. He needs us. He’s only got one eye, one arm, and one leg. He’s in really bad shape."

          By now the mother had lost her patience. "Son, you’re being unrealistic about this. You’re emotional because you’ve been in a war. That boy will be a drag on you and a constant problem for all of us. Be reasonable."

          The phone clicked dead.      

          The next day, the parents got a telegram: their son had committed suicide.

          A week later the parents received the body. They looked down with unspeakable sorrow on the corpse of their son - who had one eye, one arm, and one leg.

Patience is worth its weight in a million shining stars and a billion timeless tomorrows.  It is something you never completely have, but briefly hold, and by prayer and perseverance keep for a time 

It is an elusive blessing, and the right to claim it as your own is a right you must daily earn: by training your heart to have compassion and your mind to bridle impatience when it seems so eager to come to call.

Patience?  It is believing in tomorrow whatever it brings, bending with today whatever it gives and seeking to understand yesterday no matter what it gave.
