THY KINGDOM COME

In 1857 there was a 46 year old man named Jeremiah Lamphere who lived in New York City. Jeremiah loved the Lord tremendously, but he didn’t feel that he could do much for the Lord until he began to feel a burden for the lost and accepted an invitation from his church to be an inner city missionary.

So in July of 1857 he started walking up and down the streets of New York passing out tracts and talking to people about Jesus, but he wasn’t having any success. Then God put it on his heart to try prayer. So he printed up a bunch of tracts, and he passed them out to anyone and everyone met. He invited anyone who wanted to come to the 3rd floor of the Old North Dutch Reform Church on Fulton St. in New York City from 12 to 1 on Wednesday to pray. He passed out hundreds and hundreds of fliers and put up posters everywhere he could.

Wednesday came and at noon nobody showed up
. So Jeremiah got on his knees and started praying. For 30 minutes he prayed by himself when finally five other people walked in. The next week 20 people came. The next week between 30 and 40 people came. They then decided to meet every day from 12:00 to 1:00 to pray for the city.

Before long a few ministers started coming and they said, "We need to start this at our churches." Within six months there were over 5000 prayer groups meeting everyday in N.Y. Soon the word spread all over the country. Prayer meetings were started in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Washington D.C. In fact President Franklin Pierce started going almost every day to a noonday prayer meeting. By 1859 some 15,000 cities in America were having downtown prayer meetings everyday at noon, and thousands were brought to Christ.

The great thing about this revival is that there is not a famous preacher associated with it. It was all started by one man wanting to pray.

2000 years ago, on a hillside over-looking the Sea of Galilee, one of the Disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.  What He told them has come to be known as THE LORD’S PRAYER.

We often start our own personal prayers the same way He taught, “Our Father…” and if we think about it, we are not just praying toward a heavenly Person in a heavenly place, but talking with Him in a very close, personal relationship.

“Hallowed be thy name…” and we add this spiritual clause to remind ourselves we have just connected with the Lord of the Universe, the Creator of all things including, and most importantly right then, ourselves.

Thy Kingdom come.  Thy will be done…”  Be careful; give considerable thought when you repeat this.  Saying and meaning, “Thy will be done…” can be dangerous.  It may force you onto a rooftop frantically beating a drum.

What am I talking about?  Well, in a play I saw many years ago there are soldiers preparing for a surprise attack on a village.

However, a farm family sees what is happening.  They muse on what they should do.  They know they should somehow warn the villagers but they also know that if they try to do so they will quite likely be shot.  So instead of running into town to spread the alarm, they simply take the safer route and begin to pray.

However, their mute daughter leaves them down on their knees, climbs to the roof and begins to loudly beat on a drum the family has had for years.  Her frantic beating awakens the villagers and at least some of them escape.  The girl is shot.

“Thy Kingdom come.  Thy will be done.”  It is a dangerous part of the Lord’s Prayer if it is taken at face value and we force ourselves toward actions we know may well have adverse as well as positive consequences.

“Give us this day our daily bread…”  The French classes I took years ago have pretty much gone to some hidden recess in my brain, however, one French word bourrer, which means “to stuff” came to mind as I considered this because deep down inside when we pray this prayer we are right on the edge of praying that our lives be stuffed with “stuff.”

Food, and complete financial success, and friends that love us so much we do not have to try to improve, and newer and bigger houses and cars and …well, some of the poor and hungry when they pray “Give us this day our daily bread” mean just what they say…but in a rich America, many Americans really do mean something else.

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors…” which is the Presbyterian way of putting it, or “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us “ how Methodist and others say it.

Or “Forgive us of our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”  And this is not a casual part of the prayer.  It is a deep emotional spiritual need we all cannot really survive without.

Forgiveness from our God and our forgiveness toward our fellowman, our spouse, our children, our friends, even strangers from off the streets.  If we do not forgive, as we ask God to forgive us, we shrink, we grow sick, we die inside.

“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil…”  But prayer without our follow-through is like reading a cookbook but never making it into the kitchen.

“For thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory,” and the stating of this fact cannot be done too often.

Prayer without improvement makes prayer a Tower of Babel.  When we have asked for God’s forgiveness and His guidance it should all be building blocks upon which to build a better you and me.  Otherwise, we only fill the air with words but do not construct a personal sanctuary.

A prayer worth praying doesn’t just devoutly whisper, “Thy will be done.”  It shouts it loudly from the center of one’s soul

PRAYER...THE GREAT AVENUE TO GOD

I have spent a lifetime praying and reading others who have done the same and seek to share such wondrous moments. I meld my thoughts with such great and gracious thoughts as a quote from the book by Tim Hansel "When I Feel Guilty."

He writes about what many people want from God...and yes having read it...ask yourself what you want from God.

"I would like to buy $3.00 worth of God, please. Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk or a snooze in the sunshine.

I don't want enough of Him to make me love a black man or pick beets with a migrant. I want ecstasy, not transformation; I want the warmth of the womb, not a new birth. I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack. I would like to buy $3.00 worth of God, please."

Prayer? It is the one place our independence seeks dependence. Whether we are thanking God or pleading our case before His throne of mercy, we are in essence saying, “Here am I, Lord, take me.”

And if you say to me, “I try to pray, really I do, but I just can’t concentrate on anything for very long, even God,” I would reply, “Don’t try to conquer a mountain until you have learned how to climb a hill.”

Work on a moment, just one moment, before you extend to a minute, and when you have mastered that then try two minutes – you get the picture.

To enlarge your capacity for things of the spirit you must learn to decrease the time you spend thinking on things less worthy of your thoughts.

And do not fear to turn your life over to God. . Another way of putting it, “Be as bold in prayer as the first person to ever eat an oyster.” (rewrite of a quote by Shirley Grisholm)

I like to call what I am talking about “The Building of a Prayer Fence” A prayer fence to protect ourselves from our worst selves.

We usually know our own particular weaknesses; the places where we have far less control than we would like.

Places where we speak before we think and act before we consider what is wise or prudent. So, visualize a fence, this prayer fence that will keep in your best and keep out your worst.

And believe that if something is worth praying for once, it is worth praying for again and again. Jesus makes no bones about this holy truth. He actually tells us to set up the habit of repeated prayers. “Pray without ceasing.”

Or as An early Greek theologian, Clement of Alexandria, put it, “Prayer is keeping company with God.” And yes, we always become more like whoever we keep company

It has been over 40 years since a photographer captured the picture of a terribly burned little Vietnamese girl staggering down a highway.
The terror in her eyes told it all.  She had been to hell and back for war does not ask for a birth certificate before it does its damage.  It does not discriminate, it simply destroys any and all that lie in its path.
One would assume that this little one did not survive, but she did.  Survived to be part of a Veteran’s Day celebration in Washington, DC in the year 1996.  Survived to lay a wreath at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.
Survived to speak the following words, “I have suffered a lot from both physical and emotional pain.  Sometimes I could not breathe.  But God saved my life and gave me faith and hope.  Even if I could talk face-to-face with the pilot who dropped the bombs, I would tell him, ‘We cannot change history, but we should try to do good things for the present and for the future to promote peace.”
Ah, yes, she survived.  Survived to hear the sobs of those who listened to her words of forgiveness.  This little girl, now a grown woman, took an atrocity and turned it into a moment of amazing grace.  Did not forget but also did not let the memory destroy her

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of America's history most devoutly relious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."
Maynard Pittendreigh, Presbyterian Minister
"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian: Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle ofhumility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes: Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful studyofLincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics:'
Dr. Donald W. Shriver Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"v. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."
James H. Smylie

Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia
"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's dear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character of his subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863:'

Thomas Edison's manufacturing facilities in West Orange, N.J., were heavily damaged by fire one night in December, 1914. Edison lost almost $1 million worth of equipment and the record of much of his work. The next morning, walking about the charred embers of his hopes and dreams, the 67-year-old inventor said: "There is value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Now we can start anew."

FAILURE IS EASY TO COME BY or learn from or/and both

It isn’t difficult to fail in this adventure called life.  All one has to do is follow these daily dozen…

  1. Spend all your time planning but never doing.
  2. Try to do three things all at once.
  3. Don’t keep after a job until it is finished.
  4. Don’t make a priority list.
  5. Or…waste your time making one and then conveniently misplacing it.
  6. Waste the time of day that you are at your best.
  7. Don’t make deadlines.
  8. Never do first what you don’t want to do but know you should do or have done.
  9. Chase other people’s dreams while calling them your own.
  10. Never ask for help.
  11. Work hard at being disorganized.
  12. Read these suggestions and promptly immediately forget them.

It isn’t that failure is always bad. Thomas Edison failed thousands of times and learned from every one of them.   He studied them and let them be his teacher.  He let them plow his field of thought by turning them over and over in his mind.

Why God?

          Why not!

Are you prepared to say you have no soul and accept the logical conclusions that must follow such an assumption?

Why a Savior for your sins?  What else do you suggest God do with them?  Ignore them?

Why ask  God’s power to make you better?

Would you wish that instead you work toward being worst?

Why God in the first place and the last place and all places in time and eternity?

Because he is ALMIGHTY GOD.  THAT’S WHY!!!!

WHO WANTS TO BE A SLOTH?

There is a disease called religious slothdom and its symptoms are overpowering.

It begins with just hanging round.

Never standing for anything or standing up to anyone for Christian principles.

It would be wonderful if I did not have to make the comparison to those creatures who spend most of their living upside down in a tree, but unfortunately the world is filled with a breed of folk who spiritually are totally committed to non-commital.

Those intellectually uninterested and unconcerned about their souls.

Like the sloth of the animal kingdom, they sniff at things and that is about as action-packed as their religious journeys ever become.

To the sloth, change is an abomination.

When it isn’t sleeping its usual 20 hours a day, it is speeding over the ground at 250 meters an hour.

That sounds as if it is really going places…until you realize that one meter is equal to a little more than a yard.

And when it is not terribly motivated, which is often, it slows down to 4 or 5 meters an hour.

It is after all a sloth and has a reputation to uphold.  It is dedicated to graceful, fluid immobility and it accomplishes it exceedingly well.

Prejudice never seems to let man go and thinking about it one day I wrote the following short story.  I first wrote this for the Presbyterian Survey magazine over 40 years ago…for yes, prejudice was alive and well in those days too.

1 John 4:20

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

He reached down and picked up the strange looking mechanism that kept trying to roll away from his grasp. It was some kind of flying machine; still warm from having entered their 237 degree atmosphere. The three suns in the sky seemed always to be trying to outdo each other.
This was not the first missile to fall from out their sky.   And over the years, all those messages had kept coming and coming.  But most of what their kind knew had been learned from THE THREE who had actually visited that strange oblate spheroid.  Visited it once, but never again.

“What is it?” his companion asked with the trace of what might have been called a smile of anticipation.
“It is from earth.”

He raised his eyebrow and asked, “And you have been to earth?”
He paused before replying, “Yes, I was one of “THE THREE.” It was most depressing.”
“Really?  They couldn’t see you, of course.”
“Of course not.  I wore my invisibility shield.”
“They are obviously of an inferior race.”
They expressed their agreement in the way such agreements had been expressed for centuries. It was almost a litany as together they repeated, “The color of their skin is very pale, anemic to the eye.  Others of them are quite lack without luster.  Some even have a tinge of yellow. Some black. All kinds of different shades. They can’t seem to agree on a common color.”
A younger member of the community had just arrived. It spoke “Heavens! No green skin? Then, of course, they must be inferior. And their customs?”
          “Barbaric!”
          “How so?”
          “They talk.”

“Talk? You mean they actually speak? How uncouth! I thought all advanced races communicated by thought waves in this day and age.”
Their antennas glowed bright.

“These do not, and such a myriad of languages and dialects! They can transmit hardly any distance at all and one nation cannot understand the other. That’s probably why they are always so angry with each other. And someone seems to be trying to gain more and more power all the time.”
“Very archaic; no wonder they still have wars.”
          “And pollution is everywhere.”
Another younger IT had arrived.  He wrinkled his glock and joined in the conversation, “Oh yes, I remember that from our own ancient history. You mean they still have it?”
          “It often makes them ill.”
          “Well, naturally, from
everything you’ve told us, it couldn’t be any other way. By the way, are there any exceptions in these…now what would you call them?”
“Exceptions? Oh, yes…a few; but then you know how it is, once an earthling always an earthling”

“We might be able to use the exceptions.”
“Tell them they’re equal but treat them as if they aren’t?”
“OF COURSE!”

“We could give them equal opportunities and they might produce.”
          “Possibly.”
“Not too many. We wouldn’t want them to get delusions of grandeur.”
They had not moved for several time sequences.
“It is too bad, isn’t it?”
          “Tragic!”
But I guess that’s the way God wanted it.”
“Yes, I certainly am glad He made me like I am.”
“You have the most beautiful tentacles I’ve ever seen.”
“Well now, your claws are nothing to be ashamed of.”

“Come on, let’s slither over to the cone.  I’ll buy you an atomic soda.”
“Thanks, don’t mind if I do.  This discussion has upset me terribly.

                                    Will we never learn?

John 13:35

By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

Hebrews 13:1

Let brotherly love continue.

Psalm 133:1

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!

Malachi 2:10

Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?
