It is an old tale often told but perhaps you have not heard of it, the story of the man who was bragging about how he had cut off the tail of a man eating lion with his pocket knife but neglected to say that someone before him had cut off the lion’s head.
WHAT IS COURAGE?
The University was conducting a test. 10 University students were placed in a room and on a board in front of them were lines of varying length.
They were told to raise their hands when the instructor pointed to the longest line.
But nine of the students had been instructed ahead of time to raise their hand when the instructor pointed to the second longest line.
One student had not been told.
Then when the instructor pointed to the second longest line the nine students who had been pre-instructed raised their hands.
The un-instructed student did not at first raise his hand…that is until he looked around and saw that everyone else had raised their hands.
He knew they were wrong but three out of four times with a number of different groups the un-instructed student would eventually raise his hand too.
WHAT IS COURAGE?
John Wesley said, “Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I will shake the world. I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; and such alone will overthrow the kingdom of Satan and build up the Kingdom of God on earth.”
Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
I have always believed that courage is doing what you are afraid of…otherwise you are not being courageous.

COURAGE

The King of Prussia was an agnostic and his chief General Von Zeland was a devout Christian.
An open conflict was inevitable, that is if Von Zeland was a man of courageous conviction concerning his belief.
Therefore, one night, at a festive banquet, the King was busy making crude jokes about Christ until everyone was rocking with laughter (whether they thought it was funny or not).
With the exception of General Von Zealand.
In the midst of this raucous behavior the old military leader slowly rose to his feet and in a firm unwavering voice addressed his King.
“Sire,” he began “I have faced death many times as I have fought 38 battles for you and now I am an old man who soon will go into the presence of One greater than you will ever be.
Therefore, I cannot sit silently while saying nothing as you blaspheme my Lord. I salute you sire as my King but my greater allegiance is to my greater King.”
As he finished, he sat down and waited for a kingly eruption, an angry explosion, with no idea of what would follow.
The room had gone completely silent and the King spoke, “General Von Zeland…I beg your pardon. I beg your pardon.”
And I thought as I first read this story and am now sharing it with you, “The world is so ready and in need of those who are not ashamed of their faith…and who are busy making courage a majority emotion in this old world.
So I challenge the both of us to stand tall while remembering that we stand the tallest when we are on our knees.
Courage comes dressed in many types of clothing; sometimes hardly spectacular, wee moments that will never make the headlines, but no less courageous on the pages of time.
The farmer, is courageous each time he plows his fields and prepares his crops for he cannot be sure that rain will come or that drought will come instead. This kind of courage that says I will look to an unknown future and I will not fail to keep on keeping on.
The courage our faith gives us when we face both life and death because it is the kind of courage that has the strength of the promise of resurrection and eternity in it.
In Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” he puts in the mouth of Polonius the words “To thine own self be true.” And that is what it is all about as he further writes “Not be false to any man.” Therein lays that special courage we all can practice; not drifting with the tide or blown before every wind but sturdy and stable and true to who we want to be and know we ought to be.
The integrity of courage.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?

DON’T WHITTLE STICKS, BUILD TEMPLES

It’s been sixty years but I still remember the story. It was all over the newspapers at the time.
A man and woman had begun early in the evening to argue. At 3 AM, weary and worn, they were still bickering.
Finally the man went to sleep.
At which time the woman got a gun and shot him dead.
Her first visitor in jail was the father of the man she had killed, and his first words were, “I forgive you.” The next day it made the front pages.
Had he stood on the jail house steps and vowed vengeance, it might have made the last page of the newspaper or buried opposite the obituaries. Or received no notice at all.
But Christian forgiveness under such circumstances? Well now, when a Christian acts like it - that is news.
The agnostic H. G. Wells wrote the following, “Christianity will never work because Christ is too big for the little men and women he must work with.”
The sad fact is that many people never really expect Christians to act like it.
The Prodigal Son finally got it right. Filled with remorse. Finally able and willing to face what he had become and what he must undo, he simply said, “Make me even as a hired servant. Make me everything but what I was.”
One modern day philosopher put it well, “As a Christian, it is not your job to “whittle” sticks. You are called to build temples.” (Edgar De-Witt)
It is not enough to admire Jesus, however extravagantly; or worship him, however devoutly; but to follow him, which is after all is all he asks us to do.
If it can be said that his standards are too high and cannot be attained, there still remains the undimmed glory of the quest.
So yes...go out todoay and do some obviously over the top Christian deed that you make an impact. An outstanding act of forgiveness or love or compassion or...
In everything set them an example by doing what is good..." (Titus 2:7)

GOING PLACES?

A minister had had a car for many years and finally it began to break down. He simply didn’t have the mechanical knowledge to repair it, nor did he feel he could afford to have it worked on, so he sold it to a young mechanical genius in high school.
The young man was ecstatic. “I will make it as good as new. Thank you for the opportunity.”
And so he began to work on the car. Month after month when the minister would pass by his house, he would see the garage door open and the young man diligently working away. Over a year had past and he continued to work on the car to make it perfect before he drove it.
Two years passed and a third year was about to become a reality and still the car was not being driven.
Shaking his head, the minister muttered to himself, “I know that ole car wasn’t perfect and that it needed a lot of repair, but mechanical genius or not he seems to have forgotten that cars are for going places and getting things done.”
The church…your faith…they are for going places and getting things done. Never forget it.
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

YESTERDAYS WORDS JUST WOULDN’T DIE

William Beverbrook was a fearless publisher who was more than capable and often quite implicit when it came to printed insults. So one day he wrote a scathing commentary about Edward Heath, a young member of Parliament.
Afterwards, as he learned more and more about this young man, he realized that his enthusiasm had this time caused him to write insults he should never have written.
Then to top it off, soon after he had come to this conclusion he came upon young Heath in the washroom of his London club.
Immediately he began to apologize, for this was his way when he knew he was wrong.
“I appreciate your apology,” said Edward Heath, “but the next time, I wish you’d insult me in the washroom and apologize in your newspaper.”
Indeed, if you must express an ill opinion of another individual, write it in the sand just before an upcoming tide.
Speaking or writing ill of another person is like sprinkling salt on a carpet. Then trying to pick up it up and put it away…which is of course a “no can do”…really quite impossible.
What is a critic? Often he is a miner who constantly exhumes ill will.
“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour." 20:16

William Beverbrook was a fearless publisher who was more than capable and often quite implicit when it came to printed insults. So one day he wrote a scathing commentary about Edward Heath, a young member of Parliament.
Afterwards, as he learned more and more about this young man, he realized that his enthusiasm had this time caused him to write insults he should never have written.
Then to top it off, soon after he had come to this conclusion he came upon young Heath in the washroom of his London club.
Immediately he began to apologize, for this was his way when he knew he was wrong.
“I appreciate your apology,” said Edward Heath, “but the next time, I wish you’d insult me in the washroom and apologize in your newspaper.”
Indeed, if you must express an ill opinion of another individual, write it in the sand just before an upcoming tide.

THAT LITTLE VOICE

Someone said of one woman, "She won't listen to her conscience. She doesn't want to take advice from a total stranger."
How do you look at your conscience? As an enemy or a friend? It has had to struggle with social norms which are certainly not always right.
Slavery was a norm. Burning witches at the stake or drowning them was a norm. The denial of civil rights was a norm.
And the conscience of millions was dead when it came to these tragic obscenities.
There are always practices in business and every day life that become the norm, but that does not make them right.
Conscience is the voice of change, the power of redemptive behavior. It obliterates excuses.
It spits in the face of temptation.
It protects your friends and family from a lesser you.
It prefers to whisper in our ear but sometimes it has to shout because otherwise we refuse to listen.
If we do not have the courage to listen to our conscience then we are moral cowards.
"And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst." (John 8:9)

LIFE'S TOO WONDERFUL TO WASTE IT

Wasting a life is not difficult. It comes easily to all of us at one time or the other. Judas had been a faithful follower of Christ – but he had his price, thirty pieces of silver. And a modern day Judas sells his or her soul for a new, important title at work or a raise in pay.
Or, turning a blind eye to improprieties, immoral or illegal behavior or both.
And the first time THIS HAPPENS, this playing it safe rather than playing it right - the first time the coward who lurks within everyone rises to the fore, there is a great sound of inner pain that issues forth.
And perhaps after a second time, but if every time a conscience tries to communicate what is right or what is wrong it is ignored, forgotten, broken on the rack of unconcern, told to shut up, eventually it will take the command to heart and, do just that, shut up permanently.
It may be carrying things a bit far, but perhaps it should be a custom to have a funeral service when someone has let their conscience die.
All the family and friends of the man or woman should attend; and by so doing admit that since the conscience is now dead, no one will be hearing from it anymore. And, oh yes, the former owner of this conscience should certainly also be in attendance.

DON’T TREAT YOUR FAITH LIKE A SUNDIAL

We want to be able to look back at our lives and be pleased by what we see. Why would we want otherwise? Because too often we play a game of rewrite.
Why? Because it is so easy to take up homesteads in the valley of indecision, water our flock at the river of procrastination, build our fences with wood from the forest of false promises, get our seeds from the market of the devil and then wonder why, when the harvest of memories is gleaned, it is so full of hell.
Because none of us is perfect we all do the above, some more, some less…but no one can say they have never been guilty of such behavior.
How to avoid this? Well…first, don’t treat your faith like a sundial! To understand that statement, let me share another story.
A group of American young people, having learned of a tribe that were quite primitive in their way of living and looking at life, wanted to help bring them into this century.
These people had little concept of time, other than night and day, so the eager youths thought that if they could just get the concept of hours over to them, they might become more industrious and improve their lifestyle.
And after much discussion, they decided to send a sundial, for you see a modern clock would require electricity and there was none, and batteries would soon lose their power, and even an old fashioned spring-wound clock would soon get rusty in their climate.
When the sundial arrived the natives were elated.
They beat their drums and danced with glee. And then one of them made a suggestion. “Let us build an altar to place it on that raised pedestal that we might show respect for this present.” So they did. And daily they treated the sundial with ever growing veneration.
Then they decided that it needed proper protection from the weather and as the sides of hut they were building grew taller and taller, less and less sun could make its way to their sundial.
And when they were finally finished, the roof totally blocked out the sun. But there, properly resting upon its throne, the sun dial was daily worshipped. Of course, the sundial no longer worked.
And so it is back to my statement before this story.
Don’t treat your faith like a sundial. Don’t cover it up with honor and respect while never taking it out into the stream of life. Take it out where it will be tested. Give it the chance to grow in the midst of adversity. Shelter it and it will die or at the very least become a strangled, stringent shadow of what it otherwise might be.
“Give to the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness or in holy array.” Psalm 29: 2

BIG DEVIL, LITTLE DEVIL

Are your Christian beliefs and actions only reflex motions with no great thought or feeling behind them?
Or, you could look at it another way. Are your Christian beliefs and actions so ingrained that they are part and parcel of who you are, therefore reflex actions.
Inspired by C.S. Lewis’ book, Screwtape Letters, I have expanded a conversation that takes place between two devils. One is the big devil himself and because it is not easy being a devil, what with all the devilish little nuances always in play, he says with a malicious smile written across his face, “Little devil, I want to be sure you understand how important it is that you allow your victims to think great thoughts, espouse noble ideas, and even attend church regularly, but never actually do anything.
“Feeling sentimental about God will never hurt our cause. It is only when a person begins to act on good thoughts that we are in danger.”
A knowing look passes across the countenance of the little devil and dancing up and down he shouts with glee, “I understand, Master. I understand!”
“And be sure,” added the Big Devil, “that you never allow a Christian to have the Christian ethic so ingrained he has no choice but to do what is right. One is the big devil himself and because it is not easy being a devil, what with all the devilish little nuances always in play, he says with a malicious smile written across his face, “Little devil, I want to be sure you understand how important it is that you allow your victims to think great thoughts, espouse noble ideas, and even attend church regularly, but never actually do anything.
“Feeling sentimental about God will never hurt our cause. It is only when a person begins to act on good thoughts that we are in danger.”

GET IN THE HABIT OF DOING THE RIGHT THING

The reporter saw before him a 95 year-old-man who was still the greatest cellist who had ever lived, and he had to ask the question. “You, Pablo Casals, are recognized as having more talent than any other cellist…yet I understand that you still practice six hours a day.
Why?”
“Because I believe I am still making progress.”
And that is why you and I must continue to make resolutions and practice at this business of living because that is what it is all about…making progress…learning… achieving…improving… never quitting.
Work at making a better life rather than making better excuses.
It is simple, yet not simple at all….HARD but achievable.
How?
Don’t put doors where there should be walls and walls where there should be doors.
Be a giver rather than a taker. Generosity gives you a spiritual backbone that selfishness will never give you.
Get in the habit of doing the right thing the first time rather than putting it off until some time down the road.
When you are wrong, admit it.
You might as well…most everyone you know has already admitted it for you.

KEEP ON KEEPING ON

Her name is Suzy Favor Hamilton and she ran in the women’s 1500 meter final. She didn’t win the race, or come in second or third. Actually, she collapsed 75 meters from the finish line and then staggering to her feet managed to continue on.
She barely made it and had to be taken off the track slumped in a wheel chair. She had not won, but then again, she had. She had completed her goal - she had finished the race.
The Apostle Paul talks about finishing the race.” He doesn’t say, “I have won it” but he does say “I have finished the race…” And he added one thing more. “I have kept the faith.”
That is what we are asked to do. Run and walk and stumble and fall and rise again…and keep on moving forward…and be able to say at the very last, “I never quit. I kept on keeping on.
In short, work hard at developing a stronger “will” and a weaker “won't.”
Nor should you fall in love with a parking spot when the whole wide wonderful world is so full of opportunities…and yes…remember…the secret to success is learning how to fail.
And may I ask a question, “Have you tried to climb any mountains recently? I thought not. But that is not the point…climbing a few steps on the stairs is better than no climbing at all.”
And then there is my favorite when things get rough and you start giving up…”When you get to the end of your rope, tie a know in it and hang on.”
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. “

THE NEW MORALITY

In 1631, England's royal printers reprinted the Bible but somehow omitted the ''not'' in Exodus 20:14, the seventh commandment concerning adultery. The printers, were fined £300 and lost their license.
The archbishop of Canterbury complained about the declining standards of the proofreaders.
There is no humor in today’s attitudes toward moral behavior which is why so many references are constantly being made in the direction of ancient Rome. Therefore…to all parents and grandparents…
Don’t let your misbehaving teenager or grand daughter or grand son justify his or her actions with the term new morality.
There is no new morality or old morality. There is only morality.
And, yes, “We don’t break the Ten Commandment. If we ignore them, they break us.”
Discuss what it would be like of most people were vandals and roamed the streets with graffiti spraying paint cans or worse.
Talk about what kind of a world it would be if marriage became old hat and sexual predators roamed by the thousands.
Suggest the effect of thousands dying day after day because no one showed any kind of moral restraint.
Say things like, “Be good, son of mine, as an act of courage in a world full of moral cowards.” “Be good, daughter of mine, as an act of thanksgiving to God.” To your teenager underline with vigor that he or she is a force for good or a force for evil and that there is no in between.
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20)

Lighten Up

No where in the Bible does it say, “Blessed are they who frown and fuss.” Laughter? There are homes where no one has laughed for years. Businesses, where grim is the password for keeping a job. Hard working employers and employees who wear frowns like a badge of honor.
Sure, there are things in the world that are truly a pain. Nor will a sense of humor turn them into pleasure. Nevertheless when it comes time to pay your taxes it helps to have at the ready a thought such as: did you ever stop to think that the IRS is really just doing the Lord’s work? After all doesn’t the Bible say we came into this world without riches and that we shall take no riches with us into the next.
Or, if when someone said “Go break a leg” and you took them seriously; bring up a joke from your reserves. Something that reads, “It really is a bad day when you end up in the hospital in traction and there sits your insurance man telling you ‘Your accident policy covers falling off the roof. It just doesn’t cover hitting the ground.’”
Would you have more happiness? Then minimize your complaints and maximize your thanksgiving. “Earth’s crammed with heaven,” said Thoreau. Love, light, laughter.
The smile of a child. The ripple of a stream. A sparkling star. A rainbow. Gripes, grumbles and grousings certainly don’t offer much help.
Tonight go outside and learn a lesson from God’s great firmament. Look up at the sky, observe the stars surrounded by the vast darkness of space and then consider how they never notice the dark because they are too busy making light.
Helen Keller, born deaf, dumb and blind, had a sense of humor that combined with a sense of God allowed her to answer one day when someone asked if she could feel colors “Oh yes, I can feel blue.”
Would you have more happiness? Be able to laugh at yourself, in particular if the years are slowing you down and you are tired of being tired. Like commenting how when you get up some mornings you feel like it’s the morning after and you didn’t do anything the night before.
Loosen up. Stand on a New York City street and look up at the tall skyscrapers without caring what people watching you are thinking.
Don’t fret and worry over trying to mold yourself into a thousand different selves. Just be you.
Don’t always be sensible. Have the nerve to take a walk in the rain without an umbrella or take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the mud. Bellow in the shower like an opera star. Share your love of life with such gusto that when you walk into a room everyone there will be glad you came.
Crank up your neurological-movie house on a regular basis, and watch mental movies of good times in your past.
Remember the kitten, now grown to be a cat, arriving at your back door. And the bicycle you once regularly rode and ought to ride again. Remember that great day you accepted Jesus as Savior. Shine up your today’s by bringing up the best of your yesterdays.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and yours mind in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
This really shouldn’t be too hard too understand since it simply suggest that trying to go it alone is a poor excuse for a lack of common sense.
When I was a boy I learned both the shorter and the longer Catechism. No one does it anymore, but I did. I still remember one phrase that still shouts at my soul, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

No where in the Bible does it say, “Blessed are they who frown and fuss.” Laughter? There are homes where no one has laughed for years. Businesses, where grim is the password for keeping a job. Hard working employers and employees who wear frowns like a badge of honor.
Sure, there are things in the world that are truly a pain. Nor will a sense of humor turn them into pleasure. Nevertheless when it comes time to pay your taxes it helps to have at the ready a thought such as: did you ever stop to think that the IRS is really just doing the Lord’s work? After all doesn’t the Bible say we came into this world without riches and that we shall take no riches with us into the next.
Or, if when someone said “Go break a leg” and you took them seriously; bring up a joke from your reserves. Something that reads, “It really is a bad day when you end up in the hospital in traction and there sits your insurance man telling you ‘Your accident policy covers falling off the roof. It just doesn’t cover hitting the ground.’”
Would you have more happiness? Then minimize your complaints and maximize your thanksgiving. “Earth’s crammed with heaven,” said Thoreau. Love, light, laughter.
The smile of a child. The ripple of a stream. A sparkling star. A rainbow. Gripes, grumbles and grousings certainly don’t offer much help.
Tonight go outside and learn a lesson from God’s great firmament. Look up at the sky, observe the stars surrounded by the vast darkness of space and then consider how they never notice the dark because they are too busy making light.
Helen Keller, born deaf, dumb and blind, had a sense of humor that combined with a sense of God allowed her to answer one day when someone asked if she could feel colors “Oh yes, I can feel blue.”
Would you have more happiness? Be able to laugh at yourself, in particular if the years are slowing you down and you are tired of being tired. Like commenting how when you get up some mornings you feel like it’s the morning after and you didn’t do anything the night before.
Loosen up. Stand on a New York City street and look up at the tall skyscrapers without caring what people watching you are thinking.
Don’t fret and worry over trying to mold yourself into a thousand different selves. Just be you.
Don’t always be sensible. Have the nerve to take a walk in the rain without an umbrella or take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the mud. Bellow in the shower like an opera star. Share your love of life with such gusto that when you walk into a room everyone there will be glad you came.
Crank up your neurological-movie house on a regular basis, and watch mental movies of good times in your past.
Remember the kitten, now grown to be a cat, arriving at your back door. And the bicycle you once regularly rode and ought to ride again. Remember that great day you accepted Jesus as Savior. Shine up your today’s by bringing up the best of your yesterdays.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and yours mind in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
This really shouldn’t be too hard too understand since it simply suggest that trying to go it alone is a poor excuse for a lack of common sense.
When I was a boy I learned both the shorter and the longer Catechism. No one does it anymore, but I did. I still remember one phrase that still shouts at my soul, “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

GOD IS WITH US…

An old preacher friend of mine used to counsel me, “Neil, if your knees are knocking, kneel on them.” Or another way of putting it, “You don’t have to worry about running from worry when you are practicing patella persuasion.”
When twin towers are built and when they waver and fall to the ground in terrible pieces. God is with us long before dawn and long after dusk. On the blackest night or when the brightest moon sweeps away the darkness, God is with us.
And speaking of tall…Would you stand tall and sun crowned above the crowd? Then…Think eternity. Think salvation. Think wonderment and awe about the Creator of it all.
Put God on the back burner and the griddle of life you are sitting on will only seem the hotter. The great question must always be; how can a skinny soul deal with the big, fat problems of life?

ANXIETY, FIGHT IT OR FEED IT (Third in new series)

It was said of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, that he arose each morning at four A.M., preached over 40,000 times and traveled over 250,000 miles on horseback. And, in the course of all of this, he never hurried, he never worried and he never let foolish anxieties wear him down.
Connie Mack was a baseball manager and not a preacher but he early learned a truth that allowed him to perform brilliantly the intricacies of life.
He used to say that he forced himself to spend his time preparing to win future games rather than wasting time and energy worrying about games he had lost. “You can’t grind grain with water that has already gone down the creek,” was one of his favorite booster phrases.
One of the field hands in my first rural pastorate often mused, “When I work, I work ha
rd. When I sit, I sit loose. And when I start to worry, I just go to sleep.”
“The future ain’t what it used to be” said Yogi Berra, as he sought to explain that whether things are bad or better we are most often bothered when they are different than we thought they would be.
Today we have Afghanistan; but remember Y2K not that long ago. Remember Vietnam, the Korean War, W.W. II.
It is truly hard to picture a time when there has not been some kind of political, economic or social turmoil.
Therefore, when problems come to call let the calendar be a teacher as you wisely “Wait upon the Lord; be of good courage, and (let Him) He shall strengthen thy heart.” (Psalm 27:14)
It is good to be able to stand on your own two feet, but some proper propping up by God certainly isn’t out of order “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee…” (Isaiah 26:3)
Call it prayer partnership. Call it linking with your creator. Call it spiritual common sense.
I like the way one little old lady, with ninety years linked up behind her, approached life.” She lived far out in the country all by herself and when asked if she was ever afraid, replied, “Why should I be? Faith closes my door at night and Mercy opens it in the morning.
Professional worry warts abound; camping on doctors doorsteps with imaginary ills until such anxieties produce the real thing. Others fall victim to the 9/11 syndrome and refuse to fly though driving is still more dangerous.
The beginning of any solution is to seek out proper authorities.
As Christians, once we have read the first class authority Jesus, Take no thought (anxiety) for the morrow(Matt.6:31), it makes common sense to find outstanding examples of those who have taken his words to heart.
Whatever anxiety moments find our doorstep, if we are to accomplish well the art of living we have to learn how to cooperate with the inevitable. An appointment made and our watch stops. Gone fishing and the only thing we catch is a bad cold in a rainstorm.
When such things happen we are not required to like what is happening, but at least we must learn to learn from a problem. This way it is not a complete waste of time.
Before we traded in our 1986 Dodge several years ago, we had a car that majored in stalling. It reminded me of 1 Timothy 1:6, Kindle afresh the gift of God. It didn’t kindle afresh. It didn’t want to go.
It was a king of quitters. Our present, newer car (not that new but certainly newer) doesn’t do that. It starts, never stutters then stops. Every time we want to go somewhere it kindles afresh with remarkable enthusiasm. There are dangers all around on the highway but it never notices. It is the epitome of confidence.
We banter the Biblical truth of the power of the Holy Spirit around when it comes to organizing our fight with fear. But Victory over anxiety requires more than spiritual repartee.
Emotional conquest only comes when we finally truly accept that the secret of finding the peace that passeth understanding is to not waste time trying to understand it.
Just thankfully accept the fact that peace comes from the presence of something rather than the absence of something. And that something is God.

ANXIETY, FIGHT IT OR FEED IT (Second in new series)

There is a classic remark I love to repeat when calling attention about worrying so much about tomorrow. It reads "If course worry about tomorrow is good for you. Most things I worry about happening tomorrow never happen."
And then...
Have you heard about the man who had a plane to catch at a very early hour and then having set his alarm , sat on the edge of his bed all night long to make sure it went off on time.
He earned his PhD in anxiety. He had worry down to a science.
He believed that living one day at a time meant never or seldom sleeping so he would always know what time of day it was.
So then, where and how can a pound of fortitude be found to control a pound of fear before it becomes a ton of anxiety?
And therein lies the rub, because many a fear that was can become an anxiety that isn’t.
Timothy 1:7 offers a spiritual pilgrimage as a way of weighing worrisome things properly. “God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”
It’s all about imaging. Such as placing your fears in your hands and then handing those fears to God. Imagery does that…picture it and whatever you are imaging comes alive…praying hands for instance…you can pray without placing your hands in a prayer position but the imagery just makes it more personally powerful.
And when you do pray…don’t just tip your toe in the idea…immerse yourself…from the tip of that exploring toe to the top of your head…as wide and deep as you soul can stretch…I like the way one preacher put it, “Saturate yourself with prayer.”
And have you perhaps gotten yourself in trouble by borrowing too much. Well, don’t do it when anxiety is anywhere close…don’t borrow trouble by imaging it…all imagery isn’t good.
In particular if there are anxious moments just over the horizon. Wait till you get there. That shadow you are worrying about may by the time you get there have you standing in the sun.
And lastly …initiate an adoption program…adopt some scriptures that have great meaning and then let them raise you right. Make them a part of your family of thoughts. Invite them to breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Have them with you when you stop for a mid morning snack…so that as you feed your mind your whole body tingles because of the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Joining hands with David and his words also has a winning to it, “Submit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in Him…(Psalm 37:5)
If there is a truth that should be written across the roof of the sky it is this. When one can say and mean “…though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (Psalm 23) it is an affirmation that has the touch of miracle in it. Why? Because when one is not afraid to die, one is not afraid to live.

And when you do pray…don’t just tip your toe in the idea…immerse yourself…from the tip of that exploring toe to the top of your head…as wide and deep as you soul can stretch…I like the way one preacher put it, “Saturate yourself with prayer.”
And have you perhaps gotten yourself in trouble by borrowing too much. Well, don’t do it when anxiety is anywhere close…don’t borrow trouble by imaging it…all imagery isn’t good.
In particular if there are anxious moments just over the horizon. Wait till you get there. That shadow you are worrying about may by the time you get there have you standing in the sun.
And lastly …initiate an adoption program…adopt some scriptures that have great meaning and then let them raise you right. Make them a part of your family of thoughts. Invite them to breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Have them with you when you stop for a mid morning snack…so that as you feed your mind your whole body tingles because of the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Joining hands with David and his words also has a winning to it, “Submit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in Him…(Psalm 37:5)
If there is a truth that should be written across the roof of the sky it is this. When one can say and mean “…though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” (Psalm 23) it is an affirmation that has the touch of miracle in it. Why? Because when one is not afraid to die, one is not afraid to live.
