MAKING GOD UNHAPPY

Ephesians 5:1-2


 Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.

          I doubt that this very morning you lept out of bed because you couldn’t wait for the opportunity to make God unhappy. 

          It is most unlikely you have a list of sins you want to accomplish for the sole purpose of making God angry and dissatisfied.

          We both know that when you make God smile you are more likely to have an extra dose of that peace that passeth understanding.

          So start out by capitalizing and underlining Christ commandments to love. 

          Will this make God smile?  Yes, as when you hate such hate will make God frown.

          Obedience.  God is a Father, our heavenly Fathers are pleased when their children listen to them and follow them and as Ephesians says, “Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents.”

          Read the Bible and it makes it abundantly clear that God exhibits all the emotions; he grieves, he rejoices, he exhibits sympathy and empathy, he shows compassion.

          He was an eight year old and he had just broken his arm.

          As they came out of the doctor’s office, his arm all plastered and hanging from a sling he looked up at his mother and said,” I hope this works.  It’s one of my favorite arms.”

          And we sin and make mistakes and break commandments and God, the heavenly physician,  keeps putting us back together and loving us because we are one of his favorite people; in favor enough to send his Son down to earth to save us from ourselves.

          And it pleases him to do so…and even though he weeps…he also smiles when he sees us repenting and working and praying toward improvement.

          Let me share some words from Hebrews 11:6 because they are a key to God’s happiness and to our own.

          “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

          To make it short and to the point, God isn’t terribly happy when we ignore or put him on the back burner or second or third in line of someone we want to talk to and follow.

          Then there is John 14:15.  It certainly doesn’t beat around the bush, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
