Below the thoughts below read a quote from Rev. Wyrick's applauded 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ARAHAM LINCOLN

                        ++++++++++++++++++++

Eddie Rickenbacker, who once drifted for 21 straight days on a hot and rolling Pacific sea was once asked what the experience taught him.

His response was immediate, "The biggest lesson I learned was that if you have all the fresh water you want to drink and all the food you want to eat, you ought never to complain about anything."

Which is one way of identifying man's greatest problem, "Concentrating on what we don't have rather than what we don't."

The reason why so many people are so unhappy is because they are poor mathematicians.  They've never learned to properly and positively count their blessings.

In short, joy is a choice as often as it is by chance.

Charles Schulz in his famous “Peanuts” cartoon captures the problem of a properly proportioned life In one of his cartoons.

Lucy is delivering, delivering one of her famous lectures.

“Charlie Brown,” she begins “life is a lot like a deck chair. Some place it so that they can see where they are going. Others place it where they can see where they have been. And some so they can see where they are at the present.”

Charlie sighs, and says, “I can’t even get mine unfolded.”

Today's thoughts will do with getting the deck chair of life properly unfolded.

I love the way Dr. Wayne Dyer suggests how to improve this unfolding, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

I have met some bad people in my life.  And some of them have worked at making my life miserable and succeeded at it for a time.  But I glory in the experience for it only solidified my resolve to not be like them...

to follow the angels in life rather than the devils...

       to chose good over evil...

to praise and adore the good and loving God who sent my heavenly Jesus to spend some time here on earth.

Let me put the above thought of influence another way...every time someone has hated me or certainly disliked me they have given me the opportunity to meet their animosity with forgiveness and love.

And those times when I have achieved this mini miracle...my unfolded deck chair of life has sat steady and peacefully serene.

Two shoe salesman were sent to Africa. One sent a telegram home that said: “Get me home, nobody here wears shoes.” The other salesman’s telegram said: “Send me all of the shoes you can, nobody here wears shoes.”

Some folk find opportunity around every corner.  Others see nothing but speed bumps.

I taught archery at youth camp for several years. I found it interesting the attitudes I encountered.

Some looked at the target and said, "Well, if I miss the bulls eye I can certainly hit the target."  Others took one look at the bulls eye and could not see that every failure to hit the bulls eye was a learning experience that got them closer to achievement.

Some see life as a prison and daily rail and rant...others see it as a prism through which the love of God shines through...some worship at the altar of the hopeless...others...by their attitude constantly build and increase the size of their altar of hope.

In the later 1990's Lauren Zalaznick was the unstoppable and high-achieving vice-president at VH 1, a music video television company here in the United States.

She produced top rating program after program and had an automatic invitation to any music party or recording in the country.

She was held in the highest regard.

But then, after about five years, she felt she was losing her edge and decided to resign.
Lauren carried to this decision extreme anxiety.

Was she doing the right thing?

       Would she regret it?

Would she be able to find another job with such high points of joy?

The one day her sister gave her some advice that changed her perspective.

She told Lauren to imagine herself in 50 years time.

At that point in her life this job was going to be a single sentence which began ’In the early part of my career,’ followed by a few words and a full stop.

And then there would be 14 paragraphs about what Lauren really did with her life.

Whatever you do or I do...we are best served if we allow our decisions to be played against a backdrop of eternity.

The pastor was given an award for humility.
The next week the congregation took it back.

He had hung it on the wall on his office.

When you are working on a proper perspective in life work on your pride.

It can kill proper perspective in a minute...it really can.

A new quote  (posted Dec 3) below from Rev. Wyrick's 9th book THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN (read the rave reviews below the quote)

To be a black after the war was to wed frustration and constant peril.

An ex-slave could be arrested and fined for the crime of not having a job.

Then to help pay off the fine they would be hired at ridiculously low wages.

Buy land?

Even if somehow enough money could be saved, the laws prevented a former slave from purchasing property.

They were called black codes and they were as dark as their name.

No work or travel without a permit.  Separate legal systems.

It was 1865, and Jim Crow laws were already in place.  Every single public building had separate facilities.

William Lloyd Garrison, in a burst of optimism and perhaps also fatigue called for disorganizing the Anti-Slavery Society.

Black activist, 47-year-old Frederick Douglas, pointed out such action was premature.  “Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot.”

"Positive, powerful utterances...skillfully enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Lincoln while revealing the Divine source of his strength."

Lt. Colonel C.A. Olsen (Ret.) Asbury College (Professor Ret.)

"The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln is an extremely well written book that investigates what might be termed the spiritual side of President Lincoln. It's both scholarly and very readable. I came away impressed at Mr. Wyrick's portrayal of the President and with an altered and enlarged vision of the man:'

William Hoffman, Award winning fiction writer; author of Blood and Guile, and Wild Thorn

"Wyrick has authored a wonderful examination of the spirituality of one of American history's most devoutly religious leaders...a pleasant and readable book that has a rich depth of information."

              Maynard Pittendreigh Presbyterian minister

"When it comes to invoking religion in support of any of their decisions, politicians need to sit at the feet of Abraham Lincoln. Reinhold Niebuhr once called him 'America's greatest theologian.' Why so great? Because he invariably distinguished between human works and the works of the Almighty. As Wyrick says, 'He wore the mantle of humility easily: because he was more impressed with what God was doing in the world than with what he, president of the United States in the midst of an awful crisis, was doing. That is why in his last major speech he distinguished between both human causes in the Civil War and the Almighty's 'own purposes.' Lincoln would have agreed that it is better to leave God-talk out of politics than to decorate human proposals with divinity. This is a book for our American time. Through his careful study of Lincoln's career, Wyrick compels us to remember that piety belongs in politics only when piety transcends politics."

       Dr. Donald W. Shriver

Emeritus professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

"V. Neil Wyrick's fine work allows the reader to appreciate Abraham Lincoln's Christian commitment and his prophetic role in American history. Should have a wide readership."

James H. Smylie Professor of Church History (Ret.) Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia

"Neil Wyrick's The Spiritual Abraham Lincoln should be read by anyone attempting to understand the man who was probably the most complex person to ever hold the office of president of the United States. Dr. Wyrick is intent on demonstrating that the spirituality so often expressed in Lincoln's writings and speeches was not merely lip service to a Deity, but rather expressions of a profound faith in a real God. It was this faith that provided the wisdom, compassion, insight and sometimes steel that Lincoln would need in full measure as he led the United States through the Civil War. Dr. Wyrick's clear and unpretentious style of presentation is very much in keeping with the character ofhis subject, and in so doing, Wyrick makes his point very well that Lincoln, his beliefs, and the faith that formed them, are as relevant to a troubled America in 2004 as they were in 1863."

Daniel Allen Butler, author of "Unsinkable"; The Full Story of the RMS Titanic, The Lusitania and The Age o f Cunard

How can we keep our faith from being a weak and fruitless thing?  How can we not be foolish little men and women groveling in the dark shadows of overeager egos.

Well, first we must do more than just pray.  We must believe in our own prayers.

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON SUNDAY APRIL 15. ENTITILED

Two stores faced each other across a very busy street.  Their owners were in constant competition with each other.  One day, the owner of one store put out a sign that read – If you want it, we have it!

Almost immediately the other owner put out a sign –If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!

A QUOTE FROM THOUGHTS POSTED ON MY OTHER BLOG WYRICK'S WRITINGS ON THURSDAY APRIL 13TH. ENTITILED

WHO ARE YOU?

NO…WHOSE ARE YOU?

Who are you?  Whose are you?

You influence and are influenced according to the answer you give.

Are you are the flavor of the month because you are determined to be like everyone else no matter what?  If so, consider being more independent in our thinking and actions...because God wants you to grow up.

It may be easier being someone's shadow but wouldn't you really rather be a sun.
