All the triumph that was present as Christ rode into Jerusalem went down the tube at Golgotha.

It wasn’t until the Resurrection that things went from worse to wonderful.

Without it, we have nothing but a very wise teacher who talked too much.

With it, we have God.

Without it, the references to immortality are little more than a madman’s mouthings.

With it, the grave becomes an open door and not a dead end street.

Isn’t this what the message of the good news of the gospel is all about? One door closing and another opening.

He was a young doctor and he was dying of cancer. During the last 18 months of his wasting away he showed neither bitterness nor fear. Indeed, those who visited him with anxiety walked away with a strange kind of peace.

Describing this man of great faith, his pastor, the late Dr. Ralph Sockman wrote, “…he died as he had lived – with patience, love and submission in his heart. He died with the simple faith of a trusting child and the superb gallantry of a great soul.”

Death visits all of us.

A journey without choice. A meeting with our Maker. A time for judgement, justice, mercy, forgiveness and salvation. No man, after death, appears without blemish, yet it is not a hopeless time.

The cross sees to that. “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Nor should it be a frightening time. “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” The deed for your new home signed by Christ. A new heavenly address assured.

The wondrous promise of forever lingers always on the lips of your Christ and mine. Therefore, we must never allow ourselves to forget that we are more than a toe that can be stubbed, an arm that can be broken, an artery that can hemorrhage.

Our bodies are temples for our souls, the Bible tells us. Others use the word shell. The bottom line is obvious. Our anthropomorphic being is not made to last for eternity. Our souls are.

In short, life is a trip on the way to a destination.

Mortality on the way to immortality.

Earthly doors opening and closing until one day a heavenly gate opens wide and we enter into a place called FOREVER.

And yes…only the magnificence of the Resurrection can meet the hunger of the eternal that is within us all
