George Matheson who wrote, “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go” went blind at an early age.

The woman he loved most almost tore his life in two.

But George Matheson still wrote this magnificent hymn.

Beethoven, great master of music, at the very summit of his career went stone deaf. He could not even hear his own last symphony played, but Beethoven did not run over in a corner and pout or play out the rest of his existence in an extended nothingness.

Rather, he stayed in the stream of life writing even more brilliantly than before.

Henry Van Dyke who knew his share of pain wrote…

“With eager heart and will on fire,
I sought to win my great desire.
“Peace shall be mine, “I said, but life
Grew bitter in the endless strife.

My soul was weary, and myh pride
Was wounded deep. To heaven I cried
“God give me peace or I must die.”
The dumb stars glittered no reply.

Broken at last I bowed my head
Forgetting all myself and said;
“Whatever comes His wil be done,”
And in that moment peace was won.

They loved life and met their challenges with action and attitudes that said “I will give my best even on those days I feel my worst.” And we are blessed by such fortitude as were they.

This is a long ago story…

He was the founder of a flourishing Christian community in India, although he had never been out of England.

To the amazed listeners he said that when he was five years old he wanted to give a penny to the missionaries but strongly objected to putting it in a brown box.

He had no proof that it ever went abroad.

The local minister was a friend of the family and also the friend of an Indian missionary. So the minister, to please the child, sold him a copy of the New Testament for his penny and directed the boy how to post it to the missionary in India, having first written on the flyleaf an inscription giving the name of the boy.

The missionary gave it to a poor native who had walked miles through the jungle to procure a testament, but who couldn’t afford to buy one.

Nothing was heard of the incident for twenty years.

Then another missionary, preaching in a jungle village to people whom he thought had never previously heard the gospel message, noticed that his words were causing excited delight.

Pausing in his preaching to ask questions, the preacher found that the people knew a great deal about Christ and that many were serving him.

No preacher had ever been to the village before.

The little Christian community had been born through the love and life of the native who had been given the Testament…the Testament which was sold for a penny to a child of five.

“We are therefore Christ's ambassadors…” Corinthians 5:20

Excessive Pride must always sit at the head of the table.

One young snob suggested that excessive Pride was really only “Enlightened selfishness.”

Excessive Pride is the donkey that carried Christ into Jerusalem and thought that all the loud hosannas were for him.

Excessive Pride stands in the vestibule of the church and does not say, “Let me tell you what my Lord has done for me.”

Rather, it shouts, “Let me tell you what I have done for the Lord. Indeed, let us see if I can find my pedestal; I always speak better when I am standing up there.” Excessive Pride is a loud mouth that doesn’t know when to shut up.

What are the causes of Excessive Pride ?

Excesive Pride of birth? Was not Christ the Son of a carpenter?

Excessive Pride of wealth? Did not Jesus have but one seamless garment to his His name?

Excessive Pride of reputation? This Son of man, did He not eat with publicans and sinners?

Excessive Pride of self? In the garden, did not this Master Workman of the race pray, “Not my will but Thine be done.”

Excessive Pride in death? Was not “Jesus the Nazarene” crucified on a cross between two thieves?

“Humble yourselves [feeling very insignificant] in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift you up and make your lives significant].” James 4: 10

Mascagni hated Toscanini, one of the greatest conductors of all time.

They had never met but he was so envious it would sometimes make him ill for days on end. He could not stand the thought that anyone would think Toscanini better than or even equal to him.

And then one day there came to be a gala festival in Milan honoring the composer, Verdi.

Both men were asked to conduct.

Mascagni’s response was to be expected. “I will not conduct unless I am paid more than my rival. It need be no more than one libra but it must be more.

The management agreed.

The festival was a success.

Mascani received his fee…at least one lira more…in fact that is all he received, for Toscanini had conducted free of charge.

The Bible is full of case histories concerning Envy.

Cain and Abel, Joseph and his coat of many colors, Christ and the Chief Priest and Scribes.

There is, of course, Christ’s parable of the elder brother at the redemption of the Prodigal Son.

Envy is not kind. The Canterbury Tales were quite correct when they represented envy as “sorrow at other men’s goodness or joy at other men’s sorrow.”

“ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” (Galatians 5:22-26.)

Paul fully sense that envy and pride were like a gruesome twosome, standing on a corner, plotting against their next victim.

In Christopher Marlowe’s play “THE TRAGICAL HISTORY OF DOCTOR FAUSTUS” Envy defines itself. It says, “ I am Envy. Begotten of a Chimney sweep and an Oyster wife. I cannot read and wish, therefore, that all books were burnt. I am lean with seeing others eat.

Oh, that there would come a famine, through all the world, that all might die, and I, live alone. Then thou should see how fat I would be.

Envy is a God-complex. It is the self- appointed Kingship. It refuses the right of any other individual to have more talent, more money, more intelligence, more of anything.

St Thomas Aquinas said, “Envy is the direct opposite of mercy” and if this is true then Mercy must be the antidote for this terrible sickness.

If Energy is self-love, coupled with fear…then mercy must be other-love coupled with compassion.

If envy cannot stand for others to prosper, then mercy must rejoice in others prosperity.

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. (Proverbs 14:30)

How can we help but learn from this?

What will we do with the learning?

The liberals and the conservatives were at each others throats. Both sides were blessed with love of liberty, but neither side was willing to give it to the other.

They treated non-essentials as a matter of life and death.

One side argued for the spiritually irrelevant custom of fasting; the other side was created long-winded debates about special dates and seasons.

They fought over Sabbath days and servants, old customs and new innovations. Instead of living together as Christian, they fought like pagans.

When Envy got tired, Pride took over. When Pride grew weary, Envy stood ready, to take up the cudgel, again. Into the MIDST OF THIS FOOLISHNESS, STEPPED THE Apostle Paul, saying in essence, “Hope, love, faith, these are what count. If you’ve got all that energy to burn, don’t waste it arguing among yourselves. Go out and argue against the pagan. Go out and argue for God.”
“For where envying and strife [is], there [is] confusion and every evil work.” James 3:16.

I did not write what I share below. I was not there in some person’s study or living room or at the foot of a tree as they penned the lines…but they are priceless and their thought has survived.

What a blessing.

“When a man loves faith in God, he worships humanity; when faith in humanity fails he worships science, as so many are trying to do today.

When faith in science fails, man worships himself, and at the altar of his own idolatry he receives a benediction of vanity.

Hence the tedious egotism of our day, when men and women are self-centered and self-obsessed, unable to get them selves off their hands.”

He was an old and selfish and self-centered and he prayed…

Lord, bless e and my wife,
my son John and his wife,
us four, no more.

And down the street a childless couple prayed…

Lord, bless us tow,
and that will do.

Around the corner an old bachelor set a prayer in motion…

Lord, bless only me,
that’s as far as I can see.”

And then there is the prayer that is prayed or a prayer much like it…and it is a blessing to all who are touched by it or participate in itl

“Lord help all who live upon this earth
and give them faith and proper mirth.
From day to day help me to daily see their needs
and have no bad thoughts that are mental weeds.

One day a farmer hired a man. He asked him to paint the barn. He estimated it would take three days…

The man did it in one day.

Then he asked him to cut up a pile of wood. He estimated that it would take four days…

The man did it in one day.

Then he asked the man to sort a pile of potatoes. He wanted them divided into three groups; one pile that he could use for seed potatoes;
One pile that he could use to sell;
One pile to use to feed the hogs.

He estimated that he would do that in one day.

At the end of the day he went to see the man to see how he had done.

He had not even started on the pile.

The farmer asked what was wrong and the man said, “I can work hard but I can’t make decisions.”

How are you at making up your mind?

Are you one of those who weigh the good and the bad and then are afraid to look at the scale?

Are you one of those who are good at discussion but a failure at decision?

Do you sit before the fact of life, afraid both to do better and be better because it requires you coming to a conclusion?

There is a hymn and many of you who are reading this have sung it. Sing it again…or at the very least say it again and again.

I’LL GO WHERE YOU WANT ME TO GOD, DEAR LORD,
O’ER MOUNTAIN, OR PLAIN, OR SEA;

One day, many years ago, a boy ran away from home and became a seaman.

It was a hard life and he became hard himself.

Then one day, while in port, he entered a church and at the service the sermon so moved him he gave his life to Christ.

Who he had been and what he became were two different people. In time he became a minister himself.

One morning as he was preaching another young man did as he had done many years before, decided to come to church on that particular day and hearing the sermon was so inspired he decided to enter the ministry.

This second young man’s name was Thomas Scott.

In turn, Thomas Scott became an influence to a man named William Cowper who wrote hymns such as O For A Closer Walk with God, There is a Fountain Filled with Blood, etc.

The hymns of William Cowper inspired William Wilberforce who led the fight to end England’s role in the trafficking of slaves.

We are all Johnny Apple seeds of the mind; sowing seeds, reaping all kind of lives for good, fairly good or not so good at all.

There is a story told about two little boys who were walking home from school one day.

One little boy turned to the other and said, “What do you think of this devil business?” “Well,” replied the other little boy, “you know how Santa Claus turned out…it’s either your mother or your dad.”

Well, mom or dad or grandpa or grandma…your children or grandchildren are watching…and you are influencing them by what they see and what they hear you say…what you stand for…what you stand against.

They hear you pray or they hear you curse…or both.

They have learned what means most to you in life and what has no meaning for you at all.

They have learned whether you are honest or whether you are not.

It has been over 50 years and I still remember a young person at a Youth Camp where I was speaking. He came up to me with anguish written all over his face. “Pastor,” he said, “I heard you talk about how we all set examples for each other and as you spoke I thought about my parents. I have no respect for them. I only pray that I will not grow up to be like them.”

And then there was another young person who spoke to me one day and all he had to say about his parents and in this grandparents as well…well…it was good…very very good.

It is a simple statement that really is the story of many lives, “He believed in God as gentlemen believe.”

It is a timeless attitude. Read Elijah if you have any doubts, “How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him; but if Baal be God, then follow him.”

The people of this time of Elijah answered him not a word.

They couldn’t.

They didn’t have anything they could say.

They knew they had a conventional religion.

They knew their responsive readings backward and forwards.

They could chant their chants hum their hymns and pray their prayers, but deep down inside they knew all they had was religion…

And what they didn’t have was God.

What is religion anyway?
The Bible doesn’t talk about religion. In fact it hardly uses the word.

The Bible talks about God.

God’s will, God’s way, God’s law, God’s love, God’s Forgiveness.

Religion is simply a term to describe something to which we give ourselves.

If Elijah were to speak today perhaps he might say, “If the Lord be God, follow him; but if every other man’s way of doing be God, if convention be God, if tradition be God, then study all the ways of man, learn how your neighbor acts and what he says, and what is accepted and acceptable, and give yourself for the rest of your life to being like every other man.
You’ll be a jolly good fellow and loved by all.”

It is easier to play at religion than to know God…

Knowing God requires dedication…knowing how to find one’s way to church requires only a reasonably sense of direction.

Balzac said the opening words you read, “He believed in God as gentlemen believe.”

A belief of dignified restraint.

A belief that everything has its place, even God.

“So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].”

Isaiah 26: 4

In the 1930’s, Roland Hayes, a gifted Negro singer, stood before a hostile Nazi audience in Berlin’s Beethoven Hall. As he tried to sing, they called him every dirty name that his race had ever endured.

In telling of.the incident, he says “Resentment began to swell up inside of me. I began to feel toward them what they felt toward me, and then, for some strange reason, I remembered a sermon I heard as a little boy. The old minister standing there in the pulpit in my old home church, talking about Jesus before Pilate.

About the angry crowd and the sinsults…and how he said, “They pushed Jesus, they pushed Him real hard, but He never said a word, never a mublin’ word.”

And, remembering His love, His forgiveness, I looked out at the crowd booing, hissing, insulting, and I prayed silently, quietly, intensely.

For ten minutes they never let up. For ten minutes, I prayed not to become like them.

Then slowly, they quit and when it was quiet, I began to softly sing a song of Shubert.”

Perhaps an oyster is one of the finest examples of patience in action.

It takes an irritation and makes it a pearl.

Once, Winston Churchill, having endured a long-winded ill tempered vituperation of an angry opponent, rose at the end of the tirade and said “My honorable colleague should, by now, have trained himself not to generate more indignation than he has the capacity to hold.”

By your steadfastness and patient endurance you shall win the true life of your souls.

Every day the man would leave the subway and walk to his favorite place to dine.

And then one day the pattern was broken.

A boy approached him and with a knife in his hand demanded money. The man complied but then as the boy was leaving him he cried out “Wait up.”

The boy turned around and heard the man now offering him his jacket. “If you need money so badly you will steal then I figure you might need my jacket as well.”

Then the two began to talk and the man suggested that the two of them have dinner together.

When the meal was over he turned to the boy and said, “You will have to pay for the meal because you took my wallet…I’m broke.”

The boy paid for the meal for the two of them and gave the wallet back.

As he prepared to walk away the man tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Wait a minute” and handed him $20. “I know you need money so I want to buy your knife from you.”

So the young man took the money, handed him the knife and walked away.

People who have God in them both by logic and the power of the Holy Spirit do all kind of crazy wonderful things. And people who receive such crazy actions sometimes do some wonderful redemptive things.

And sometimes we see them and sometimes we can only imagine them but they are nonetheless the workings of the strange and wonderful power of our Creator and our King.

God? Who is God?

“If you have seen me you have seen the Father,” said Jesus.
Matthew 18:2-4. There we read…
“And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

In CANTERBURY TALES, envy is presented as either sorrow at other men’s goodness or joy at other men’s sorrow.

Envy is a windbag. It builds temples on other men’s dry bones. It is not content just to think envious thoughts; it feels driven to spread its own poisonous intent. It feels obligated to win other converts to its point of view.

Its favorite pnrases are “You’ll never believe what I am going to tell you” or “anyone can plainly see” or “I wouldn’t be saying this if they didn’t…”

Envy and gossip are close friends. They serve each other well.

Envy prays special envy prayers; “Lord, let people appreciate me more even if it means they must appreciate my neighbor less. Give me what I want even if you have to take it from someone else.”

In the novel THE BROTHERS KARAMANOV, the is an elderly monk named Zossima.

He is known throughout the land for his holiness and sainthood and hundreds journey to him for help and guidance.

Yet, for this he is not always loved. Lesser men resent his popularity and envy the adulation of the people towards this priest.

Therefore, they constantly ask as if it were not so, both in the monastery and out “Why do they think him so saintly?”

Take care what you pray for if it is propelled by envy.

Some cannot handle wealth. It ruins them.

Some cannot handle beauty. It makes them fools.

Envy is often loud in its desires and requests, it seldom wise.”

“Let us not be desirous of vainglory. Provoking one another; envying one another” (Galatians 5:26)

These words were written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Galatia, to the people of that ancient parish. It was a letter to a people in turmoil.

Christ had in their own generation, preached and lived a holy love. Now, the membership was tearing up in unholy pieces both the church and the teaching of this Christ.

Envy reigned and was not a picture on its throne.

The liberals and the conservatives were at each others throats. Both sides were blessed with love of liberty, but neither side was willing to give it to the other.

They treated non-essentials as a matter of life and death. One side argued for the spiritually irrelevant custom of fasting; the other side made long-winded debates about special dates and seasons.

They fought over Sabbath days and servants, old customs and new innovations. Instead of living together as Christians, they fought like pagans

When Envy got tired, Pride took over. When Pride grew angry, Envy stood ready to take up the cru gel, again.

Into the midst of all this foolishness, stepped the Apostle Paul, saying, “Hope, love, faith, these are what count. If you’ve got all that energy toi burn, don’t waste it arguing among yourselves. Go out and argue against the pagan. Go out and argue for God.”

I am aware that recently I wrote a column for this blog on love. However, I just cannot let pass some more of the kind of comments we all enjoy…the following comments on this emotion by those far younger than myself still have in them that special depth that only the very young can achieve.

WHAT IS LOVE?

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore.

So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hand got arthritis too.

That’s love.

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth.”

“Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.”

CONFLICTED CONSCIENCE

A certain governor of Texas one day visited a state penitentiary; it was his plan, unknown to the prisoners, to grant a special pardon that day.

As he talked with man after man they all vehemently declared their innocence.

It was societies fault; they were framed; no one understood, they’d never been given a chance.

Finally, just as he was about to leave, he noticed one forlorn little man hovering in the shadows.

When he questioned him as to his crime and his built, the little man replied, “I’m guilty. They let me off light for what I did.”

The governor knew immediately what he must do. It was this man to whom he gave the pardon.

“He was the only one worthy of a pardon. He was the only one willing to admit his guilt.” he always answered when asked “Why this man?”

There is an old Arab proverb that speaks to why so many are unable to admit they are wrong and instead just make excuses.

In this parable one Arab asks of another Arab if he can borrow his rope.

“I am sorry,” replies the other Arab, “but I have need of it to tie up my milk.”

“Tie up your milk?” puzzled the first shiek. “But surely you do not use a rope to tie up your milk.”

“Well,” came back a classic reply, “when you don’t want to do something, one reason is as good as another.”

When anyone does not want to give up his or her sins and take in God’s forgiveness, when Christ stands on the hill-top and a person prefers to hide in the shadows, it might well be said that one reason is as good as another.

Except that no reason that is really just an excuse and hat takes one away from God and God’s forgiveness is reasonable.

Your conscience may bother you and sometimes you may weary of its bothering, but be glad of this moral whisper of God within you. For when it dies you die.

The poet Kipling once wrote, “Ship me somewhere east of Suez, where the best is like the worst, where there ain’t no Ten Commandments, and a man can raise a thirst.”

But can anyone truly recommend this kind of a journey?

In the last half an hour over 30 people in the United States have tried to kill themselves. By the time you get ready to go to sleep tonight that number will have risen to well pass 700. Every 60 seconds someone in the United States of America decides life isn’t worth living.

This evening, in a land blessed in so many different ways, freedom not being one of the lesser blessings, almost 30 million people tonight will take sleeping pills.

A tremendous number of people are hyped up and/or feel let down.

Is there a solution? Well, there is the beginning of a solution and it is called thanksgiving.

It starts out by appreciating all the blessings we have that are priceless but cost us nothing. Indeed, suppose it was 50 cents a night to be able to look up and see the stars.

Or suppose a sunrise or a sunset were a $1; or a bargain of $1.50 for both.
OR?...

A French philosopher by the name of Monteigne asked the following question, “Shall it ever be a time when the things that matter most are the victim of the things that matter least?”

Thoreau put it well when he said that man should be judged by the portion of things he learns to do without.

“Serve the Lord with gladness:
come before His presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord He is God:
It is He that hat made us, and not we ourselves;
we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise;
be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.

For thirty-eight years a man had an infirmity and then one day Jesus came upon the scene. Walked onto a portico surrounded by five porches and over to a man lying by the pool called Bethsaida.

With great tenderness he said, “Wilt thou be made whole?”

A strange question, at first hearing, for one would believe that certainly for thirty-eight years it had been the fervent hope and prayer of this man that he be made whole.

But then you look again at the words and in particular if you look at the original Greek…for now you find the question means, “Are you in earnest…do you really want to be made whole?”

And therefore to you…Do you in your quest as a Christian really want to be made whole.

You do not lie on a stretch surrounded by five porches but you live in a world surrounded by more than five temptations.

And to you Jesus says, “Are you in earnest…do you really want to be made whole?”

Are you apathetic about your sins? Are you lethargic about your weaknesses?

Is your love for God only a weak and listless thing?

Is it perhaps beautiful like fine crystal…but just as fragile.

Someone once wrote, “A man who would have friends must show himself friendly.”

This could quite easily be rephrased to read, “A man who would have God must show himself Godly.”

And what is Godly?

Well, in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, we read “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but have not love. I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophrecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but have not love, I am nothing.”

Love God! Love our fellowman as ourselves! Set this as our goal…our mission…and our very soul will have a smile as wide as a sunrise meeting a sunset on a very special day with God.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 NKJV) "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; {24} But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD”.

Once, St. Francis of Assisi put his hand on the shoulder of a young monk and said, “Brother, let us go down into town to preach.”

So they went out and down the streets and through the market-place.

When they had walked for several miles, St. Francis turned back, retraced his steps and once again, they entered the Monastery.

“But Father,” asked the young monk, “When shall we begin to preach?”

“We have been preaching,” was the reply, “As we walked, we were observed; our manner, our behavior, what we stand for. We have been preaching.

A sermon seen is better than a sermon said any day of the week.

People forget the fine phrases we preachers put together much more easily than they forget what we do…and the same is no less of a truth for you…the reader of these words.

The eye takes a million photographs and more hour by hour, minute by minute…and the printouts are on minds and souls and hearts and the very fiber of our being.

What have your hands done in the last hour, the last day, the last week…the whole of your lifetime.

What good have they accomplished?

What dream or goal did they allow to die along the side of some long forgotten road? Is it really too late to resurrect some dream or goal? I think not.

Your tongue is a moving platform, a noisy instrument that constantly breaks the silence with its utterances…blessings, curses?

Your feet, where do they take you and it is good where you are going or have been…or not so good at all.

Honor…does it speak to you often and do you listen to its admonitions.

Teacher, for that is who and what you are.

What do you daily teach your friends, your family, strangers upon the streets.

They are all watching you and listening to you and learning from you what you think is important in this adventure called life.

They miss nothing and you know it an I know and we know it and we are the better off for such knowledge if we but allow ourselves to become more wise.

The first question in the Westminster Catechism is “What is the chief end of man?”
And the answer is, “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

This is a story about the building and expanding of a house. A very special house. I have been building it now for almost 82 years. Sometimes each new foundation has been built on rock and sometimes it has been built on sand.

There have been times when its rooms have been filled with devils and filled with angels.

Sometimes I have gone down into the cellar of this house and cried.

Sometimes I have stood on its roof-top and shouted to the glory of God.

This house I have been writing about it me.

And so many times I have heard a knocking on the door of this house and I have not answered as often or as well as I should, and I am forgiven but I am not happy when I am less than diligent in going to the door; for it is the Lord who is knocking and I who should be answering on a regular and persistent basis.

Can we put it this way? Show me the house you live in and I will have a good beginning in how to understand who you are. If I can have a look at the guest list over the years I will learn even more about you.

And what is your house made of?

You just can’t walk into a forest filled with rotten wood and build a house that does end up being rotten too.

And who is the Master builder and contractor and architect for the House called You.

A house can so easily be cluttered with the mold greed and selfishness. And when that happens one becomes allergic to one’s self.

A house can with committed effort be filled with trust. And that such a good thing…

“I would be true, for there are those who trust me;
I would be pure, for there are those who care;
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer;
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.”

“Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” Matthew 7:17

Rufus Jones was a great preacher but before that he was just a little boy challenged to learn how best to grow up rather than down.

One day, his mother and father as they prepared to go into town said to him, “We want you to weed the turnip patch.”

After they had gone, as he tells the story, he went out back and looked at that turnip patch and quoting himself says, “For the first time in my life I understood the biblical phrase “Everlasting to everlasting”

He never saw so many weeds.

And just at that moment two friends came walking by with their fishing poles over their shoulders. “Rufus, let’s go fishing” they called out.

Of course, he wanted to go fishing and he didn’t want to weed turnips…so when they said, “When we come back, we’ll help you,” he was up and ready and gone.

Well, that afternoon went like no afternoon had ever gone before and before Rufus knew it the afternoon was gone and the weeds weren’t pulled and mother and father were home. He knew he was in trouble when his mother just took him upstairs.

He didn’t know whether he was going to get a walloping or a bawling out, or both.

However, when she got him up there, she simply put him to bed, never got out the whipping stick, but rather got down on her knees and began to pray, “Dear Lord, I love this boy of mine, I got all kinds of hopes and dreams for him and he has disappointed me. He’s disobeyed me. But, Lord, somehow help him to be the boy he was made to be.”

Then she walked over and kissed him and went out and never said another word and he said “You know, I never consciously disobeyed her again.”

Don’t know whether you’ve seen that old sign, but certainly you’ve heard about it, you know the sign that says, “Be careful which rut you get in, you’ll be in it for the next 25 miles.”

Well, there are a lot of grooves and there are a lot of ruts and there are lots of people in ruts and not enough in grooves.

”Choose You This Day Whom Ye Will Serve,
But As For Me And My House We Will Serve The Lord”
Joshua 24:14-24

To serve is to listen to God’s commandments and to obey these requests. To choose a groove called rightful living or a rut called wasted living.

"No man can serve two masters...Ye cannot
serve God and Mammon."--Matthew 6:24.

Life is a series of choices and each poor choice we make is a wound to our soul, our minds and the very fiber of our being.

Artist Hunt always explained it was not an oversight, but intentional because, “The door to the human heart can only be opened from the inside.”

There is an old Chinese proverb that reads, “A diamond cannot be polished without friction nor man perfected without trials.”

The Apostle Paul put it yet another way, “Trouble produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

When Paul wrote these words he did not write them from some ivory tower. Indeed, just before this quote he says “Five times received I forty stripes save one, thrice was I beaten with rods.”

Ludwig Van Beethoven conducted his famous Ninth Symphony, the audience stood and rocked the theater with their applause. Ludwig Van Beethoven, however, heard neither the music nor the applause because by this time he was stone deaf.

When three year old Louis Braille blinded himself while boring holes with an awl in his father’s harness shop, it seem a senseless tragedy. However, because Braille was blind, the blind have been able to read now for over 100 years.

Helen Keller born deaf, dumb and blind said, “Thank God for my handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work and my God.”

Once, two men in Charles Reade’s book THE CLOISTER AND THE HEARTH were shown walking through a troubled Europe. One man continually turns to the other says, “Courage my friend, the devil is dead.”

A better tonic for the soul might well have been the words, “Courage my friend, God is alive.”

That is the gospel my friends. It does not deny problems. It asserts faith. It comes to you in your darkest moment of doubt and says, “Come unto Me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you peace.”

The Bible says, “God commandeth His love toward us, in t5hat while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Yes, I am aware that there are those who kill but there are also those who heal. I know there are storms but there are also sunsets. I know there is pain but there is also the pleasure of being comforted.

I do not know why God made earth like it is, or why there had boe an Eden from which was thrust or why there have been wars and rumors of wars since time first was.

But I do know this…inside every person God set a soul. He put within us greed and graciousness, sin and sainthood; all kind of evil and all manner of good…and then He made man free.

And I believe it was God’s love Who did all these things.

In the stage play GREEN PASTURES, God is kind of like a master chef at a gigantic fish fry…a cosmic bellhop ready to respond to every summons.

But such a God would not truly be a loving God. If all I had to do was to say, “God, let it rain and it rained…or God, let the sun shine and the sun shone…or God, Let Joe die and Mike live…If my prayer had literally the power of life, death and creation, God would not be a God of love…

He would be a foolish God listening to the foolish whims of a foolish man. I do not want that kind of God…I want a God…just, kind, loving, who with understanding holds me back after a prayer and says, “Not now my child, not now…I know best…believe it…not now.”

Let me close with a quote from a book entitled PEACE OF MIND.

“Men, men, I gave you an earth ribbed with veins of diamonds, and bold and black with frozen heat. I gave you strong and dynamic waters to drive your windmills and make your turbines hum with power. I gave you rich loam upon which you could grow waving wheat. What have you done? My coal often you have stolen, leaving only the slag for the oor. My diamonds, my gold, my living waters, you have imprisoned behind the walls of your selfish greed. Because you refused to use my gifts in order to build a just earth, you have been forced to spend gold like water for ships blown up in the twinkling of an eye. You have seen you cities ruined and your precious sons annihilated on a thousand battlefield. Now, at last, the intelligence which I have implanted in you, on race of man, has fashioned the key to unlock My treasure house of energy. Within the secret heart of my atoms is the power of life and death for all of you. O men, will you this time chose weapons of death or tools of life; unconditional destruction or unconditional survival?’

You see, this God of love is not just a God to worship or belie in…or turn to in time of need…He is a God to apprehend, to take unto yourself, to imitate by how you act, and what you are, and what you are becoming.

There are dozens of Edison stories worth the telling. This is one of them.

It seems that to enter the grounds to his homes, you had to push open a large clumsy gate that took quite a bit of exertion to open.

One of his friends, ventured to ask Edison one day why he didn’t do something about it, get a new gate, something lighter, make it easier to open.

With a twinkle in his eye, Mr. Edison replied, “Come with me. I want to show you something.”

He then showed him how the big gate was geared-in with a pumping contraption and said, “You see, everyone who comes to see me and opens or shuts the gate automatically pumps a gallon of water into a tank on my roof.”

As I watched him I could see the tension in his face and how he held his body and I thought of something I just read by a Dr. Julian Lake.

The good doctor had set up two groups; in the first group were people who were unable to relax and in the second group were those who were relatively free from tension.

They discovered that the tense people had one thing in common which was not prevalent among the relaxed group =--- they were all extremely critical of others.

It’s really quite simple.

When you love your neighbor and make an effort to at least understand he or she even if they are not acting neighborly, you feel better.

If you are always finding fault when your complaint is at best a costly and shriveled thing your body responds in like kind.
