In Scotland, on the famous golf links of St. Andrew’s, the higher grade of caddie is something of a dictator on the course.

He gives the club he thinks you should use and suggests the direction in which he believes the ball should be hit.

One day, a stranger not use to the custom, approached a dog-leg hole and argued when the caddy suggested a different club than he had called for and a different approach to the tee.

The caddies reply was a classic, “Sir, you may use whichever club you wish and shoot in whichever direction you desire. I am only suggesting how to play in order to win the hole.

The Bible is so full of good advice and so many pass it by so many times. And play the game of life badly and end up in sand traps and thickets and behind trees and end up with more bogies than birdies.

And for those of you who have no idea how golf is scored...let it be said that a bogie is bad and a birdie is good.

"Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man."

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT GOD IN YOUR LIFE?

The Holy Man saw that the young man who was approaching was troubled. He wore distress on his face as if he had just traded it in for despair. The young man’s opening words trembled as he spoke, “How can I find God?”

The old man stared into the dark brown river and replied, “Do you really want to know?”

The young man’s reply was irreverent and impatient.

“Of course I want to know. Otherwise I would not have asked.” Anger added itself to the young man’s emotions.

With a motion as quick as lightning the young man felt his neck squeezed in an iron clasp as his head was thrust beneath the surface of the water. He struggled to free himself and was sure he was about to drown.

Finally the Holy Man released his grip and the young man sputtering and choking exclaimed “Why did you do that?”

“Because,” came back the reply, “When you want God as badly as you wanted air when you were under that water, you will find him…you will find him.”

How badly do you need God? With how much effort do you seek God? And yes…the inevitable questions.

When you die do you have any other plans besides heaven?

While you are living, how goes it? Got any problems? Are you handling them or are they handling you? Got all the answers? Think you could do with a bit more of that peace that passeth understanding.

Break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord ..." Hosea 10:12.

Ole Daniel Boone was starting across his beloved old mountains and someone took that time to ask him if he had ever been lost.

He smiled and replied, “Well now, I can’t rightly say I have ever been lost but I have been powerfully confused.”

Speaks to the problem of some people. Ceptin’ they are lost and have been a lot worse than confused for a long long while.

Trying to be everything to everybody while losing their own identity. Laughing at jokes they don’t think are funny; agreeing to philosophies they don’t agree with at all. Lost their sense of Godly morality because it is easier to believe in nothing and everything all at the same time.

And what can be done to help solve this problem.

Well, to start with start a diary of God. Thjat’s right.

Every day write down a one sentence description of every prayer you prayed and when. And if you had a thought about God write down what that thought was and how influenced you.

Then at the end of a week sit down and read what you have written. If you missed a day or even more; were so busy God got put on the back burner or even worse wasn’t even taken off the shelf, well…what you don’t read will say a lot also.

If you didn’t short change yourself with a diary so short it said nothing you will read what your thanksgivings were and your petitions and who you prayed for if you prayed for someone besides yourself and whether you sometimes just shut up and listened.

This diary will tell you a great deal about you…and God…and how often he is in the picture frame of your life.

And from this you will see where you have been seeking directions and how often.

Two old farmers had taken a brief break from the fields and were having a conversation.

“My wife is always asking for money.”

“That so,” replied his friend.

“Yep, last month she asked for $10. Then last week she asked for $15 and just this morning she ask for $20 more.”

“Jumpin’ Jehosofat, what does she do with all that money?”

“Don’t know,” came back the reply, “I ain’t given her any.”

And God Almighty sits on his throne and says “Give me your life.”

And we can both spell and identify the meaning behind the word commitment but many have not yet given any yet.

So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages]. Isaiah 26: 4

During the Civil War, a Yankee Commodore was put in charge of a blockade on the Mississippi with strict orders to allow no cotton to pass down the river. In a very short time the inevitable took place. Speculators were in hot pursuit of a weak or non-operating conscience.

The bribe machine was soon in full working order.

Which is why on a rainy afternoon three men stood before the Yankee commodore and offered a large sum of money to allow cotton to pass down the river.

What happened next is worth relating.

Three barges were still unmoving as the afternoon hours faded away. The men kept raising their offer and the Commodore kept saying “No!”

After yet another offer he rose from his chair and shouted “Get out of here. All of you get out. You are getting to close to my price.

Judas had his price. It was thirty pieces of silver.

A modern day Judas may sell his soul for money or power or some title to affix before his name. The temptations are many and they are relentless.

There are those who would argue that conscience is a jail cell that restricts and restrains to a degree that life is no longer pleasant. There are others who declare that conscience is old fashion and that a better guideline is to ask “Does it make me feel good?” Or “There is no right nor wrong, only what I say is right on wrong.”

Martin Luther King, as he did so well with so many subjects, spoke the following “…When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A nation can flounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy.”

Acts 24:16 “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.”

Once upon a time, in the warmth of is mother’s womb, a small babe made some very foolish statements.

They were not foolish to him.

Since the first growing of one cell upon another he had known nothing else. In the almost nine months of his creation it had been the same and so he said, “I have never seen my mother’s face. Therefore, I have no mother. The totality of all my existence is in the womb. All my labors, my talents, my time should be directed toward this world as I know it,”

There are folk who worshiping at the alter of atheisms do this kind of thing all the time.

Who say, “I have never seen God, therefore there is no God.”

And from this they conclude “The totality of all my existence is the world I abide in.”

And they continue “Therefore, all my labors, my talents, my time, my money should be directed toward this world as I know it.”

CHILDREN OF A KING

Late one afternoon when the sun seared and live for even the well off was difficult a group of starving, sick and beaten slaves staggered down a gangplank.

Their heads were bowed, their shoulders slumped, their feet dragged step by step…all but one.

This one stood tall and straight, his clear black eyes looked ahead and his shoulders were back.

“Who is he?” someone asked.

“He” replied one of the slave traders “is the son of a King.”

This is you and I my reading friend…we each are a child of God…a son or daughter of a King…created a little lower than the angels as the Bible reads.

Isaiah 40:31
Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

WHAT DOES THE “ST” STAND FOR?

He had stolen some sheep.

In the days in which the theft occurred and in the place where he lived, it was the custom and the law to brand the letter ST on his forehead. He could have left the community, he could have worn his hair long over his forehead in yet another place, but this was home and he had no desire to leave, so he stayed.

He decided to live down this evil thing which he had done. So, year after year after year he conducted himself with dignity, with Christian love, with faith, tenderness, courage and love; all those virtues which so few men practice with any repetition.

And as will happen with the passage of time, he became a very old man.

One day a stranger walking through town noticed the ST branded on his forehand and asked someone what it meant.

“I am not sure” came back the reply, “but I think it stands for saint.”

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER...CHANGE FOR THE WORSE...OR NO CHANGE AT ALL?

His name was Saul..of Tarsus..a tentmaker.

A man of wealth and position in the community.

When men began to follow Christ other men persecuted them and stoned them.

Saul was one of the persecutors.

And then one day with the white domes of Damascus gleaming on the horizon, Saul changed his name to Paul –his position to servant – his status quo to that of missionary.

He gave himself, completely, wholeheartedly, to someone called Christ.

He put it this way, “…I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”

Yet another time he said, “Therefore work out your own salvation, for it is God which worketh in you.”

His name was Starr Daily. He was a thief, a bum, a liar. He had been in more jails than most people have been in grocery stores.

One day as he stood before a judge for sentencing, the judge said, “I don’t know what to do with you and I know sending you back to jail isn’t going to help. You’re just a lost cause, a hopeless case.”

Starr Daily spat out his defiance in reply and was dragged from the courtroom.

A few years later he had become one of Washington D.C’s most respected reporters…because one day…he simply changed…and where he had believed in nothing now, now completely, wholeheartedly gave himself to someone.

His name was C. S. Lewis. He died in 1963 at the age of 62.

In 1927 he was a brilliant young atheist at Oxford University. During these student days he used a sharp and nimble brain to constantly throw barbed darts at Christians and Christianity.

He was a leader of the sophisticated, emancipated from the foolishness of faith, happy as a cynic, an agnostic with a song on his lips.

But then one night in Magdalen College something happened…the vacuum of nothingness became too much…you name it…he says, “I threw myself down on my knees, the most struggling convert that ever came before the throne of God, and I cried out in the night. “’Oh, God, if there is a God, let me know and let me let others know.”

From that moment when he no longer rebelled against the face and force of God, C.S. Lewis became one of the outstanding defenders of Christianity in the British Isles.

Not as a minister but a professional writer…this man who had laughed in the face of God…simply one day changed…and he who had believed in nothing…now completely, wholeheartedly, gave himself to someone.

We have economic problems in America these days and the reasons are many and the answers are of a lesser number. Still…let me just make some comments that seem relevant in these hard times and times less hard. Call it responsibility. Call it each one carrying their own load. Call it anything you want or give it no name but think on the below.

This happened to a relative. Two men delivered a heavy trunk and were supposed to deliver it to a room on the second floor. One of the men looked at the long steep stairs and said “I’m not going to work this hard for what I’m being paid” and promptly walked off the job.

If Moses had sought the easy way out his people would have remained in slavery.

If Christ had taken the easy out there would have been no cross.

What I am talking about are those who sharpen their soul with sacrifice and walking that extra mile and not looking for the easy way out.

Man was made for climbing…for doing. When he becomes content with compromise. When he loses his desire to do his best no matter the payment then the easy way out is not really easy at all.

“God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)

It happened.

2 A.M. Golden, Colorado and a man awoke from sleep deeply troubled and distressed.

For a reason he could not explain he felt his son in great danger. Therefore, though it was quite cold in the room, he got out of bed, knelt on the floor and prayed, “Lord, protect my son, wherever he is, for whatever need.”

Two weeks later he received a letter from the Philippines.

His boy, working there in the islands, told of a recent and miraculous escape from death.

Sailing across an open expanse of water one night, a terrible storm came up quickly and within a short time for all his bailing, it seemed that surely the boat would capsize.

Suddenly the wind ceased, the sea grew calm and he continued on his journey safely.

After several letters back and forth, the father and son concluded that 2 A.M. in Golden, Colorado corresponded exactly with the same moment in the Philippines the storm had ceased.

What was it Martin Tuper said, “Prayer is the tender never that moves the muscles of omnipotence.”

DAILY THROW AWAYS

REMEMBER EACH TUESDAY a continuing addition to my novel “RUST ON MY SOUL” will be added until the entire novel has appeared. (Published by Bridge Press, 1985) (Distributed Internationally) This serialization began Tuesday April 13, 2010.

Sometime, somewhere in the long ago, someone took one look at an egg, tasted its shell, examined its texture and hardness and said to themselves, “This is worthless,” and threw it away.

It was, indeed, many, many moons ago, but I have no doubt it happened.

People with faulty observations and faulty conclusions throw away good and gracious things all the time.

Once upon a time, someone picked up a watermelon and ran their tongue along its greenness.

It did not pass a multitude of tests; too heavy, the skin – even the mellow, yellow underside, too thick and evil tasting. So it obviously it was of no use and they threw it away.

People with faulty observations and faulty conclusions throw away good and gracious things all the time.

Who are you?

During your days on this earth you are what you keep and what you throw away. You are the product of your decisions; good, bad, indifferent and sometimes, like some decisions I have made, just plain stupid.

But you are also what people think you are, and people with faulty observations and faulty conclusions throw away good and gracious things all the time.

Yogi Berra in one of his famous Yogi-isms once said “You can see a lot by observing.”

And that is definitely part of the problem.

Many see things, but don’t take the time to really observe, to study, to learn, to apply insight on top of plain sight. And when we don’t dig deep enough, refuse to really try to see who a person is so we can better understand them, then we rob them and we rob ourselves.

And it then becomes little wonder that we come up with coo-coo, cock-eyed notions followed by coo-coo, cock-eyed lives.

Who are you? You are not only how much you try to understand yourself. You are also how much you try to understand others.

Louis B Meyer, the movie tycoon, learned a lesson early in his boyhood that he never forgot.

In a fight with another boy, he came out a poor second.

That night, he tearfully cursed the boy and vowed to get even. The next day, the Meyer family went on a picnic and his mother who had heard him the night before placed him in a little clearing that a mountain wall.

“Now, Louis,” she said, “Repeat what you said last night.”

His face turned red as he mumbled “Damn you.”

Shout them his mother demanded. And when he did the words came bouncing back off the mountain wall overwhelming him.

She made him repeat it over and over again.

Finally, she said, “Alright, that’s enough. Now shout ‘Bless you’

Louis Meyer never forgot the lesson of the echo.

It shaped his thinking and his doing for the rest of his life.

“But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive you.” (Matthew 6:15)

There is an ongoing story that is your life and mine. It stretches toward and into the awesome journey called eternity.

For this is where we live. ETERNITY. We only record time. Calendars are a convenience. Line up seventy and these days maybe eighty or more along a wall and there is your earthly existence.

But there are not enough calendars or years to describe your immortality and mine.

When you stand at the grave of one you loved, hold a calendar in your hand. Is this all life is? Some markings on a piece of paper, checked off until there are no more, oris it greater than this?

“Lo, I am with you always,” said Christ. Is there an always? Where judgment and justice meet is a matter beyond the comprehension of man. It is never really completely understood short of the mind of God.

Therefore, turn the eyes of your soul upward and outward and say over and over again…

Loved one, I miss you
but what we were
and who God is
leads me to a place that is beyond understanding.
Therefore, let them battle with mysteries
in the classrooms.
I only ask for special solace
from the heart of God,
and the strength of God,
and the presence of God.
I only ask for meaning
That laughs in the face of time
And bows in awe at the opening of Eternity.

And the answers are there and have been and evermore shall be…neither gaining no losing any of their emphasis.

It is the Alpha and the Omega speaking, the word made flesh speaking.

The great preach Henry Ward Beecher wrote “Living is death, dying is life. On this side of the grave we are exiles; on that citizens; on this side, orphans; on that children’ on this side, captives; on that, freemen; on this side, disguised, unknown; on that, disclosed and proclaimed as the Sons of God.”

He was in his middle forties and just beginning to firmly sharpen his skills for healing.

HOW MUCH DOES A MIRACLE COST?

She was only eight years old and what she was hearing from her mother and father was not good. Her little brother George was sick and he was going to die.

The only thing that could possibly save him was a very expensive surgery which the family could not afford.

“Only a miracle can save him now,” and she heard her father’s voice break as he said it.

Tears began to flow down her cheeks as she headed for her room and her little piggy bank. When she had broken it she began to count how much money she had saved. She counted the amount three times. It was the same figure all three times.

She placed the few small coins in a cold weather kerchief, walked down from their upstairs apartment and headed for the corner drug store.

There was a long line but she waited patiently.

Finally the pharmacist turned to her and asked, “And what can I do for you, young lady?”

“I want to buy a miracle,” she replied.

“I beg your pardon.”

“My daddy says only a miracle can save my little brother who is dying and I just want to know how much does a miracle dost?”

“Sorry honey…but we don’t sell miracles here.”

“But I have the money to pay for it. Just let me know how much it cost.”

One of the men who had been standing in line had stayed around while he examined a pierce of merchandise just to the right of the counter and heard it all.

“What kind of miracle does your brother need?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” the little girl Mary replied, “I just know he is very sick and is going to die unless he gets a miracle.”

“And you want to buy one for him?

“Yes,” and her lip began to tremble,

“How much money do you have?

“A dollar and eleven cents.”

“Well now” said the man. “It just so happens that is the exact price a miracle to save your little brother will cost.” He took the money with one hand and then her other mittened hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents.”

The well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, renowned surgeon specializing in solving the malady that was destroying her little brother. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until he was up and around and doing fine.

The parents still could not believe this great doctor had done what he did with no charge to them.

“I wonder how much it would have cost,” said both mother and father. “It’s like a miracle.”

Sister Sally smiled because she knew how much a miracle cost.

A dollar and eleven cents.

THE ATTIC OF THE MIND

I have not always lived in these southern climes. I was born in Virginia where we had attics and I thought them a treasure trove, filled with all kind of wonderful things of our families past.

But like most attics there were things saved that could best have been thrown away.

And I got to thinking. The same thing is true of the attic of our minds.

Indeed, got any old hates lying around rotting in the shadows? Got any old jealousies all shined and bright and deadly? Got any sins you have never brought out into the bright light of God’s forgiveness”

The attic of the mind can certainly store a lot…a lot more than our rather large attic was capable of storing…but like the attic of my childhood days…not everything is worthy of being saved.

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God"

During the Revolutionary War one Captain John Calendar was found guilty of cowardice at Bunker Hill. After he had been court-martialed, General Washington discharged him.

It was after this that John Callendar, set an example that more men might follow. Though he had been a captain, he re-enlisted as a private. Some months later he displayed such courage in a battle, Washington publicly revoked his court-marshal and restored him to his previous rank of captain.

No matter what we have done or left undone, it is never too late to repent and remake a life.
