Since 3600 B.C. there have been 14,150 wars and only 292 years of peace. They have been responsible for the slaughter of three and one-half billion people. It has cost enough to buy a band of gold large enough to span the globe, 100 miles wide, 30 feet thick.
But still men of faith have known and continue to know what a 23 year old wrote over sixty years ago. It was yet another war. He had been caught as a spy. The next morning he was to be executed.
Still he penned:
Dear Dad:
It is difficult to write this letter to you, but I have to tell you the Military Court has pronounced a very heavy sentence upon us. Read this letter alone and then tell Mother very carefully…In a little while it is going to happen and it is not so terrible. I do not fear. I have the firm conviction that I may look forward to a death in Christ.
It is after all, one moment and then I shall be with God. We must be courageous. Be the same. They can only take our bodies. Our souls are in God’s hands.
God bless you all. Have no hate. I die without hatred. God rules everything.

A FATHER'S LOVE...A FATHER'S SACRIFICE

The bridge spanned the river and most of the day it ran parallel to the river so that boats could easily pass on by.
At certain times the sound of an approaching train would cause the bridge operator to turn the bridge sideways so the train could safely cross the river.
Then, as always, when he heard the whistle of the approaching train he waited at the controls until the train was at the proper distance away. Then he would activate the controls and as it had hundreds of times before, the bridge would move into its proper position and lock.
All went well, until he realized the bridge was not locking and that unless he could get it to lock the train would plummet into the river and all aboard would perish.
He hurried from the control room and swiftly moved to a lever switch that he would now manually hold the tracks in place until the bridge had passed.
It required great strength and had no doubt he could keep everything in place.
Then to his horror he heard a little voice, “Daddy, where are you?”
It was his little son crossing along the tracks having left the control room.
He thought to call out “Run back to the control room. Run back” but he realized the tiny legs would never make it in time.
What could he do?
He could leave the lever he was holding, run and pick up his child and carry him to safety. But! If he did so the train would crash into the river and hundreds would die.
It was the easiest and most difficult decision he would ever make in his whole life. As the train sped safely by, no one aboard noticed the tiny broken little body thrown mercilessly into the river. Nor were they aware of the pitiful sobbing figure still clinging to the lever long after the train had passed.
Consider this.
Yet another father experienced this pain after he had sent His son to earth. Our heavenly Father sacrificing His son to save us.
Remember how the earth trembled and the skies darkened on that Golgotha day. And how often do we with thanksgiving literally bursting from and within our heart pray “Thank you Lord for loving me that much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

I first read this many years ago and have used it both in private conversations and pulpit proclamations more than once. It is, of course, timeless and that is both good and bad.
She’s a woman with a mission, it’s her heaven born ambition to reform the world’s condition, I’d have you know understand.
She’s a model of propriety, she’s a leader of society and she has a great variety of remedies on hand.
Each a sovereign specific, just a little scientific, for the care of things mortific that vex the people’s souls.
For the swift alleviation, of the evils of the nation, is her foreordained vocation on this subliminary show.
But while she’s up and coming, always hurrying and humming and occasionally slumming, this woman of renown.
Her neglected little Dickey, ragged, dirty, tough and tricky, with his fingers soiled and sticky, is the Terror of the Town.
Proverbs 19:18 “Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.”

The man gave his wife a birthday present…a scholarship to a Christian College but not for her…rather for a poor student who could not afford it.
A woman gave the gift of a new shirt and tie to her husband but not for him…instead for a small boy in an orphanage who could not afford it.
Is it almost birthday time for someone around your house. Have you been discussing a birthday present?
Give a gift to someone in need in the name of someone you love? And let them know what you did? What will be…would be…the response? The answer to that question is in itself monumental…now isn’t it?
How does that scripture read “Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren…”

WORRY IS SUCH A WASTE

Thomas Carlisle once wrote, “Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance but to do what lies clearly at hand.”
Was yesterday a success? Good. Be thankful.
Was it a failure? Unfortunate. Learn from it.
Will next week be too busy? Are you worn out just thinking about it? Save your energy for doing. Don’t waste it by worrying.
The man who can say, “My goal is what counts. Obstacles may slow me down but they’ll never stop me. Only death will stop me and then I am fulfilled because I did not quit,” is the kind of man who knows how to live.

The surgeon was matter of fact in his comment but he was a good surgeon, one of the best. “Tomorrow morning,” he said to the little boy lying before him, “I’ll open up your heart…”
“You’ll find Jesus there,” the boy interrupted.
The surgeon tried to hide his annoyance and continued for he believed that his patients should know what was coming, no matter their age. “I’ll cut your heart open to see how much damage has been done.”
“But when you open up my heart, you’ll find Jesus there.”
The surgeon looked over toward the parents who seemed to be taking the conversation in perfect stride. “When I see how much damage has been done, I’ll sew your heart and chest back up and I’ll plan what to do next.”
“But you’ll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You’ll find Him in my heart.”
“Persistent little one,” thought the doctor and he left.
After the surgery he sat in his office examining his notes “,,, damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest, Prognosis:, here he paused and took a deep breath, “death with one year.” He stopped the recorder but had more to say.
“Lord, why did you do this? You’ve put him here. You’ve put him in this pain and You’ve cursed him to an early death. Why?”
And the Lord answered him back, “The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long; for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, an will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day, join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow.”

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

This is a true story.
Leonardo Da Vinci, the noted Italian artist who took seven years to paint the Last Supper was searching for a model to use for the face of Christ. A face free from the scars of sin or signs of dissipation caused by sin.
Finally, after weeks of searching he chose a young man of 19.
The figure of Christ was painted first. Now for the rest of all those years he searched out and painted the figures of the Apostles.
Finally the time came to find a face that would represent Judas Iscariot. The face must mirror deceit, hypocrisy and the ability to betray. Weeks passed and he could not find such a man.
Finally, word reached hi that there was a man in a dungeon in Rome, sentenced to die for a life of crime and murder, whose face showed all that he was searching for.
When the man was brought into the room at the prison where Da Vinci was waiting, immediately he knew he had found his man. It was a vicious face ruined by the inner man.
By special permission from the king, this prisoner was carried to Milan where the picture was being painted. For months the prisoner sat before Da Vinci until one day the painter sighed and said, “Take him away. I have finished.”
As the guard prepared to take him away the man began to weep. “You did not recognize me” he cried out “You do not know who I am.”
“I have never seen you before in my entire life,” replied Da Vinci.
“Oh God,” and the man collapsed to the floor. Trembling, his voice shaking with remorse the prisoner explained, “I am the same man you painted just seven years ago as the figure of Christ.”
It is an old quote that speaks to a timeless truth.
"If you live close to God
And His infinite grace,
You don't have to tell;
It shows on your face."

CRUELTY FOR DINNER

The frail old man had gone to live with his son, daughter-in-law and four –year old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight translated everything into a blur and each step seemed as if it might be his last.
The family ate together at the table every night but the grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating an adventure in one failure after the other.
Food dropped consistently on the floor as it never made its way to his mouth. Milk was spilled because his shaky hands could not hold the glass steadily.
Each night the irritation of the old man’s children became more and more and their patience less and less.
Finally the son said “We must do something about grandfather.”
So from that night on they set a small table in the corner away from the family where he began to eat alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their meal. And since he had broken a dish or two, his food now was served in a wooden bowl.
Sometimes which was seldom when they cast a glance in his direction they could detect tears in his eyes and sometimes a tear trickled down his cheek and into the wooden bowl.
Still the only words he heard from the couple were angry words when he dropped a utensil or spilled food.
Their four year old watched in silence.
One evening after dinner the couple looked at their four year old son playing with wood scraps in the corner. “What are you doing they asked?”
“Oh, I’m trying to figure out how to make a wooden bowl for each of you so that when you get older you will have something to put your food in.”
It was the last night the grandfather ate his meals in the corner alone.

Henry Ford forgot to put a reverse gear in his first car, but not in his second.
Edison once spent $2 million dollars on an invention that never did work out, but as he said, “I got $2 million dollars worth of experience.”
Most unhappy people are those who have never learned how to take failure. They know what they want, but they haven’t gotten it and they can’t take the big NO! Someone, or something, knocked them down, so they stayed down.
“Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.”
That’s an old quote and a great truth. No one ever gets all they want when they want it.
Indeed, sometimes what we want we’ll never have. Maybe we need it – maybe we don’t, but what we do need is a state of mind, heart, and soul that doesn’t give up every time we don’t get our own way.
I don’t have everything I want, but neither do I know everything I need. So, the best thing I can do is pray, “Lord, when my wish is not wise, temper me for Your will.”
You see, I’ve learned that often it is not always my wish that needs tempering, it is me.
It is my soul, my personality, my total being that needs the strength and peace of acceptance.
I may keep my dreams ‘til the day I die and never have them fulfilled, but without them, I am dead.
Therefore, somehow, by the grace of God, I have to learn how to live with victory and defeat, health and sickness, love and hate, peace and war, faith and doubt.
Somehow my happiness must be deeper than what I have.
Somehow it must flow from what I am, and the I AM be happiness-prone.
That is why the prayer, “Lord, when my wish is not wise, temper me for Your will” must be my prayer, and yours.
“…I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

That is why the prayer, “Lord, when my wish is not wise, temper me for Your will” must be my prayer, and yours.
“…I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

The great evangelist, Billy Sunday, used to say when he got up-and-got-going against sin, “I’m against sin. And as long as I have a foot, I’ll kick it. As long as I have a fist, I’ll fight it. As long as I have a head, I’ll butt it. As long as I have a tooth, I’ll bite it. Then one day when I’m old and fistless and toothless, I’ll gum it, till I go home to Glory and it goes home to perdition.”
In Bill Clinton’s autobiography he comments on what he did with Monica Lewis and then he makes a striking admission, “I did it because I could.”
That is what sin is all about. We sin because we can. We sin because God gave us that freedom. God will not force us into repentance and redemption.
It was fairly early in the morning and a woman hadn’t been out of bed very long.
Her hair was still aiming itself in several different directions. And she had just begun to put cleansing cream on her face when she heard a noise outside.
It was the garbage truck. “What is he doing here this early,” she shouted as she made a mad dash to get the garbage out before he pulled away.
She looked a mess and the old pair of slippers she flopped to the street in looked as if they might not last long enough to complete the journey. As she rushed forward the final few feet she cried out, “Am I too late for the garbage?”
The garbage man may then have flunked diplomacy but his reply was priceless, “No ma’am, not at all, just hop right in.”
Sin enough and long enough with no desire to change and you don’t have to hop right in, you’re already there.
Read Luke 6:45 (NIV) and you will find the following more than interesting commentary, “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

This is longer than most of my stories I share but I believe it will be worth the extra time it takes you to read it.
Why do you pray? Why bother? Why not just solve your problems with logic, mathematical calculation or scientific exploration? What is it about this continual talking to God that makes it so important?
Well, let me begin to give an answer by telling you a story that began many years ago, and then we will see where it takes us from there.
Picture, if you will, a little boy of five, leaning against his mother’s knee, her hand resting gently on his head. It has been a long day filled with so much new excitement.
Some things he has learned to do quite well, and others, he wonders if he will ever learn how to do them. He is growing up and it is not easy. Then her gentle voice, the voice of his beloved mother, begins to repeat the prayer he has heard so many times before, “Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed by thy name.”
He repeats it along with her. He is proud that he has learned it, though he does not understand all that he prays. Perhaps one day he will.
Time passes, as time will, and there is not time enough this morning to tell all that happens to him in the next four years, but now he is very sad for he is standing by a grave. His father’s grave. There has been a coronary… quick, unexpected, final.
Tears course down his cheeks and there, in front of everyone, he falls to his knees and without embarrassment prays: “Our Father which art in heaven…” and now the words have new meaning to them. For the first time he really understand what is that he is saying….”Our Father…my Father…oh, my father…”
More years pass and it has not been easy.
They have lost their home and live now in a tiny apartment. His mother leaves early for work and arrives back home late. He is eleven years old, tired and very angry at the world and what it has done to him, and even at his father for dying.
But he falls to his knees as he has been doing all his life, for without prayer he knows he is truly lost. “Hallowed be thy name….” he pauses. How can I be angry with God and pray these words, he thinks. And then he remembers some words that his Sunday School teacher taught him - Christ from the cross saying, “Father forgive them….”
And he sees Christ on the cross and it seems He is speaking directly to him…. “Father, forgive this young man and let him feel thy love and forgiveness for his anger. Bless him and make him strong.” And as the lad repeats the prayer, “Hallowed be thy name…” this time, for the first time, these words have real meaning.
Somehow he has survived.
Played on the high school football team. Earned his diploma. No money for college, so he has joined the army. And a place called Normandy becomes something more than just a place on the map. His best friend, this very day, has fallen as they both charged up the beach. Only a gasp, a strange puzzled look on his face and he was dead… and others are falling, too.
All around him is the horrendous noise of destruction and death, a cacophony of hell.
In the shelter of a wrecked tank, he falls to his knees and prays,”…. Thy kingdom come…. Oh Father, please… thy kingdom come soon, dear Father, please.” And for the first time these words have real meaning.
There are many terrible battles, and when the war is over there is the battle to just survive. Put food on the table for his new bride and then for the children that come one after the other.
And then one day, after all his loyalty and hard work, he is fired. He walks out of the office for the last time into a cold world. It is snowing. The sky is as gray and dark as his mood. And he hates. Hates like he has never hated before. And he knows it is a cancer that will eat him alive if he does not rid himself of it, so in the snow he falls to his knees to pray. But he can’t.
For a year he is filled with bitterness. He hates another human being, his former employer, with such passion he has lost his fellowship with God.
One afternoon, he stands in front of the house where his old boss lives. Sees the mansion, the expensive car, the landscaping…and what he feels in his throat is vile and bitter and uncontrolled.
Again he falls to his knees and he does not care who sees him. He thinks to himself, I will not rise until I can continue with the Lord’s prayer, and mean what I say.
Not until I can get beyond the words I have been unable to say, “Forgive us…” and he stammers, “Forgive us…” but the rest of the prayer sticks in his throat. It seems as if he has been on his knees forever, but in reality it has been a very small piece of time in the midst of eternity. “Forgive us…our debts as we forgive our debtors…”
And it is as if a thousand pounds have been lifted off his soul. So many times, over the years, he has prayed these words, but he has never really understood them, till now.
The last fifteen years have gotten better.
He has a new position of some stability. His salary is not large, but neither is it small. He remembers times that were infinitely worse. And then it happens. A challenge to his honor, to the respect he holds for himself.
A bribe is offered. Subtle, but still obvious. He is high enough up the corporate ladder to make the request come true. No one would know. But he has turned it down. Turned down what would have been enough money to assure his children’s college education, help with rising costs, buy that dream cottage in the mountains.
He could have built himself a monument of excuses and banked a small fortune. But he has not. And strangely, wonderfully, he feels better than he has felt in a long, long time. Again he kneels and prays, “...Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...” And for the first time he really understands.
Where have all the years gone? Grandfather he is now. No, even more – a great grandfather. And they are all gathered round his bed; children, grandchildren – echoes of his own growing up years. Eight decades and more have taken their toll, but he is not afraid. His body is tired, but his spirit is alive and well. His wife is holding his hands and softly crying.
“Don’t weep, my darling,” he says. “It has been a good life and I but go to a good and gracious Lord.”
And he begins to pray, “Our Father which art in Heaven…” and he thinks, Father, I’m coming I’m coming. “… hallowed by thy name…” For always now, dear Father, for always. “…Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” for these left behind may it truly be Thy kingdom come. “Give us this day our daily bread…” You have provided well, Lord. “…Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil…” Father, my sins are behind me.
His breathing is more difficult now and he is having trouble finishing the prayer. Someone finishes the last words for him, “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, amen.” And he smiles and his last breath comes and goes easily. He has prayed this prayer for the last time, but with joy in his heart, he finally, fully understands it all.
The Lord’s Prayer is a wonderful soul-serving, soul-saving prayer. It can change your way of living because when you talk to God, really talk to God, all kind of things can happen. But praying is also dangerous business.
Moses talked with God and ended up having to lead his people out of Egypt.
Saul talked with God and ended up with a monumental name change, for today we know him as Paul. And we know Paul as a spiritual giant.
The man in our story talked with God and one day it all fell in place.
It took a lifetime, but his last earthly words were to God and it was good.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16: 11

It seems as if he has been on his knees forever, but in reality it has been a very small piece of time in the midst of eternity. “Forgive us…our debts as we forgive our debtors…”
And it is as if a thousand pounds have been lifted off his soul. So many times, over the years, he has prayed these words, but he has never really understood them, till now.
The last fifteen years have gotten better.
He has a new position of some stability. His salary is not large, but neither is it small. He remembers times that were infinitely worse. And then it happens. A challenge to his honor, to the respect he holds for himself.
A bribe is offered. Subtle, but still obvious. He is high enough up the corporate ladder to make the request come true. No one would know. But he has turned it down. Turned down what would have been enough money to assure his children’s college education, help with rising costs, buy that dream cottage in the mountains.
He could have built himself a monument of excuses and banked a small fortune. But he has not. And strangely, wonderfully, he feels better than he has felt in a long, long time. Again he kneels and prays, “...Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...” And for the first time he really understands.
Where have all the years gone? Grandfather he is now. No, even more – a great grandfather. And they are all gathered round his bed; children, grandchildren – echoes of his own growing up years. Eight decades and more have taken their toll, but he is not afraid. His body is tired, but his spirit is alive and well. His wife is holding his hands and softly crying.
“Don’t weep, my darling,” he says. “It has been a good life and I but go to a good and gracious Lord.”
And he begins to pray, “Our Father which art in Heaven…” and he thinks, Father, I’m coming I’m coming. “… hallowed by thy name…” For always now, dear Father, for always. “…Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” for these left behind may it truly be Thy kingdom come. “Give us this day our daily bread…” You have provided well, Lord. “…Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil…” Father, my sins are behind me.
His breathing is more difficult now and he is having trouble finishing the prayer. Someone finishes the last words for him, “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, amen.” And he smiles and his last breath comes and goes easily. He has prayed this prayer for the last time, but with joy in his heart, he finally, fully understands it all.
The Lord’s Prayer is a wonderful soul-serving, soul-saving prayer. It can change your way of living because when you talk to God, really talk to God, all kind of things can happen. But praying is also dangerous business.
Moses talked with God and ended up having to lead his people out of Egypt.
Saul talked with God and ended up with a monumental name change, for today we know him as Paul. And we know Paul as a spiritual giant.
The man in our story talked with God and one day it all fell in place.
It took a lifetime, but his last earthly words were to God and it was good.
“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16: 11

Edward Day, a minister and author of the book An Autobiography of Prayer, tells his story.
“Ten years ago, a beloved physician and friend told me that I had a heart blockage, and that my heart was greatly enlarged. His conclusions were the results of careful examinations by himself and experts with the aid of the electro-cardiograph and other reliable tests. His warning was to slow down.
Two years later, after the same examinations and tests and the diagnosis, and prescription, were the same. The prescription, however, could not be filled for it seemed to me that the clear call of God had taken me into labors that were even more grueling than those from which I had been warned two years before.
Keeping schedules that would exhaust much younger men - sixteen to eighteen hours a day, journeying up and down the land bearing almost intolerable burdens in the effort to reach the unawakened masses with the message entrusted to me.
From the view-point of medical science, it was reckless folly. But God had called, and was still calling. What else could one do?
Here, however is the surprising thing.
Recent tests, of the most thorough kind, revealed there is no longer any sign of heart blockage and the heart is perfectly normal in size!
Do you wonder at my belief that It is of God? Or that there is a conviction that the prayer which commits one wholly to God has therapeutic reverberations in the body as well as redemptive effect upon the spirit?”

Yogi Berra in one of his famous Yogi-isms once said “You can see a lot by observing.”
And that is definitely part of the problem.
Many see things, but don’t take the time to really observe, to study, to learn, to apply insight on top of plain sight.
And when we don’t dig deep enough, refuse to really try to see who a person is so we can better understand them, then we rob them and we rob ourselves.
And it then becomes little wonder that we come up with coo-coo, cock-eyed notions about our fellowman followed by coo-coo, cock-eyed lives.
Give me understanding, that I may keep Your law; yes, I will observe it with my whole heart. Psalm 119:34

Martin Luther spelled out why he had his act together as one day he wrote, “My conscience is captive to the word of God.”
What’s the difference?
Well, there was a great difference in a man named Kagawa who many years ago worked in the slums of Japan and was called “Christ’s fool.”
There was a John Bunyan, God-filled / God-seeking, writing Pilgrim’s Progress in a filthy jail. Turning that place of despair into a sanctuary.
Edgar DeWitt Jones put it this way. “As a Christian it is not our job to whittle sticks but rather to build temples.”
What’s so great about this faith we have embraced? Well, materialism can put a new coat on a man, but Christ can put a new man in a coat.
“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!" (Psalm 139:17-18b)

As some of you know, I once taught archery.
And you may find it interesting that I always taught my students: “Set your hands, the angle of your bow, check the tension of your strings, the straightness of the wooden arrow, that’s what they were 60 years ago, the condition of the feathers and most of all, don’t aim at the target.”
I would repeat myself, “Don’t aim at the target,” just to make sure I had their attention.
And then I would say, “Don’t aim at the bulls eye.”
I’m sure by then many of them were thinking, “Wow! What kind of a teacher is this?”
I would conclude by saying, “Aim at the center of the bulls eye. You won’t hit the center of the bulls eye every time, of course you won’t…but that needs to be your goal. If you just aim at the bulls eye you may actually miss the target completely.”
And that’s life.
It has to have a focus.
Want to get better, be better? Then don’t make it a goal. Make it a mission. Make it a vision.
Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision the people perish.” Until a person knows who he is, where he is going and why he is living, he is destined to become one more miserable member of the Lost and Not Found Department.
“Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Jesus Christ”(Phil. 3:12).

There is a book entitled, You Shall Know Them, and in it is a story not easily forgotten.
In this work of fiction a strange tribe of jungle creatures is found to have some of the rudimentary characteristics of humanity, but also seem to have a definite likeness to the animal kingdom.
The question confronting those who come upon them is - are they man or beast? If they are men, they have certain inalienable rights and status. If they are beasts, they can be hunted and exploited.
A young scientist puts the question to the test when he kills a child of the tribe. He is subsequently put on trial for his life before an English court. Testimony comes from every source - science, philosophy, anthropology, zoology, religion… all give their opinions.
A conclusion is never reached, but it does close with the general agreement that if an answer is to be found it must be found in the realm of religion. That for all the definitions of humanity, the ones dealing with heart and soul are the surest.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)

This wasn’t in a sermon but in an article in this last week’s TIME magazine as to what makes us happy rather than unhappy.
And what do you know!
It listed all the things Christ told us that we should do; love our neighbors, let go of anger and learn to forgive, practice acts of kindness, etc.
Of course, the magazine didn’t mention The Sermon on the Mount or the 13th chapter of First Corinthians – got to be politically correct. They simply called the article, Eight Steps toward A More Satisfying Life.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

IMAGE THE WORD OF GOD

Almost one hundred years ago, two drawings of the sinking of the Titanic appeared in an American newspaper.
Each artist had come to his own conclusion, but what a difference in their mind-sets.
The first drawing showed the great ship being smashed on an iceberg. Underneath were the words, The weakness of man, the supremacy of nature.
The second drawing depicted a man stepping away from a lifeboat to a sure death to give a woman and her child the last place in that last lifeboat. Underneath were the words, The supremacy of man, the weakness of nature.
We image the word of God when the call of His word become a living thing in our daily living. God loves each of us as if we were the only one here on earth and stands ready to help us be a helping hand in this world if we only pray and mean “Thy will be done.”
“Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

Thomas Paine, during our country’s Revolutionary War, spoke to the soldiers in the cold of Valley Forge, sought to challenge them to be their best, called out to them to be more than “sunshine soldiers and summer patriots.”
And that is what we are called to avoid, to avoid becoming spiritual sunshine soldier and spiritual summer patriots.
To be Christian Revolutionaries who can endure the cold shoulders of disagreement.
Christian Revolutionaries who can endure and endure and endure for victory goes to those who do not grovel.
Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed. Proverbs 16: 3

Remember the politician Adlai Stevenson, the man, half a century ago, who ran for president with a hole in the bottom of his shoe?
If you are old enough you remember the picture of him sitting there on the platform, legs crossed and a rather large hole in his shoe sole.
What a way to be remembered.
But there is also something else he remembered for which you may not recall.
Adlai once coined a word “yo.” He said it could mean “yes” or “no,” whichever you wanted it to mean.
Well, it is the perfect word for some people. Ask them what they really want or really don’t want, and if they are honest, they will answer “Yo” because they don’t really know.
Commitment. Some are. Too many are not and lukewarm and listless they slog through life on fire for nothing. What a sadness.

One day a minister wrote a stinging reply to a caustic criticism of him that had appeared in the local small town newspaper.
Before he sent it he had several of his ministerial friends look it over and make comment.
One of them wrote across the top, “Not sufficiently redemptive.” He had made his case, proved that he was right, but the price, if he sent his letter, would be too high.
“Do nothing from selfishness or conceit….” That’s the way Paul put it.
But that’s a large order, for unfortunately there is no scarcity of either in the hearts of men.
Selfishness and conceit, oh how often they are giants in our hearts. And oh, how often they make bigots and shrews, and cause even the kindest Christian to not always be so kind. They are truly a cancer to the soul.
A proper balance is hard to accomplish. Too little pride and you have no confidence. Too much and you become vain. Too little and you never reach your potential. Too much and you begin to act as if you are God.
“We all want to play Hamlet,” is the way Carl Sandburg put it.
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

INVITE YOUR SOUL TO COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE

One dark stormy Atlantic night, many years ago, an old ship captain was hopelessly lost and confused.
Just as he came to terms with his confusion a passenger came rushing up and asked, “How are things going, Captain?”
With a sardonic tone in his voice, the captain replied, “Going? Well, actually we’re lost, but as for going, we’re sure making good time.”
This describes countless millions. Making good time, but terribly confused. Rushing from one chaotic pillar to the next irrelevant post.
Practicing the religion called “gimme and always on the go.”
Following after the mistaken idea that a lifetime is measured by the amount of kicks an individual gets. Spending a lifetime trying to live it up until one day there isn’t much time left to live it down.
It is far too easy to do. Losing honor and self-respect by trying to be everything to everybody. Losing Godly morals because they get in the way. And going to church? It isn’t the answer, unless the soul comes along for the ride.

WHERE IS YOUR FOCUS AND WHERE SHOULD YOU GO LOOKING FOR IT?

In C.S. Lewis’s book SCREWTAPE LETTERS the devil tells of a man who goes into a library to read and think. It is quiet and peaceful and his mind begins to turn to God.
Quite naturally, in not that long a time, he begins to think of eternity and his place in the scheme of such heavenly things.
Then, the little demon who has been assigned to him by the big devil, for this is what the book is all about, takes over. .
He makes him aware of the sounds of the street. They are muted, but if he takes his mind away from meditation and God, he can hear them.
Before he had not heard the cry of a paperboy calling out the latest news (remember, this book was written over half a century ago) but now he does, and the roar of the engines and the constant tooting of horns. All reverberations of where he lives, earth, and not about heaven.
And so, because of these earthly sounds, his mind wanders further from God.
It is not that they are bad sounds.
It is just that it is difficult for man to focus on more than one thing at a time. Soon he finds himself growing very hungry.
He looks at his watch. It is almost lunch time.
Other things intrude and soon any thoughts of God are really on the back burner.
He has been delivered from the danger of daring to think about God. And the devil is happy and the little demon received his proper and, he felt, well earned hellish award.
Isaiah 40:31
Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

The Grand Dame of playwrights Lillian Hellman was a hero and there are not enough of them to go around.
When it was not at first the popular stand, she stood up against the Senator McCarthy’s witch-hunting committee on communism in the movie industry and refused to testify.
She decided he was fishing without enough bait.
Decided that, yes, there were communists and that communism was bad but not everyone he was trying to incriminate was a communist. And so courageously she spelled out her reason, “I will not cut my conscience to fit the year’s fashion.” Finally, she was proven right, but for a time she stood alone.
He who is steadfast in righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) attains to life, but he who pursues evil does it to his own death. Proverbs 11: 19

The Grand Dame of playwrights Lillian Hellman was a hero and there are not enough of them to go around.
When it was not at first the popular stand, she stood up against the Senator McCarthy’s witch-hunting committee on communism in the movie industry and refused to testify.
She decided he was fishing without enough bait.
Decided that, yes, there were communists and that communism was bad but not everyone he was trying to incriminate was a communist. And so courageously she spelled out her reason, “I will not cut my conscience to fit the year’s fashion.” Finally, she was proven right, but for a time she stood alone.

PEACE OF MIND

Thoreau suggested that a man be judged by what he can live without.
So what is clutter? It’s when the inconsequential becomes a necessity. It’s when and if we reach a point we don’t think we can live without all the things we should certainly be able to live without.
A question.
If you chase happiness only in a Cadillac or a new van and rest after such labors on a Beautyrest, is it then guaranteed you will be happy?
If you wear success like a golden crown with all its attributes, is it now a guarantee that you will be happy?
If so, then why is the suicide rate higher among the haves than the have-nots?
Of course, we all don’t agree on what’s clutter. Some would say church clutters up a perfectly good weekend. Others would argue that honesty can clutter up an otherwise profitable business deal. And too many would argue that God’s commandments clutter up life with guilt.
One man’s blessing is another man’s clutter.
So perhaps as a way of finding out what you don’t want, I should ask what do you want?
Peace of mind? I think we can agree that just about everyone wants that, yet too few manage to have it.
Peace of mind is one of those things you cannot buy or barter for.
You can learn about it, but that doesn’t mean you will find it.
Fifty years ago, millions of people bought a book entitled “Peace of Mind.” But millions didn’t instantly obtain it because peace of mind just can’t be captured inside the cover of a bestseller… that is, unless you mean the Bible.
The book of Galatians spells out how to get it and keep it, “The fruit of the spirit is peace.” (Galatians 5:22)
Which means you can’t have apples, or pears or peaches or even pomegranates without a tree. And God is our tree and the fruit from that tree is peace of mind. But if you don’t fertilize your Tree of Peace with prayer and Godly thoughts it will never really grow too well.
A man cannot have peace of mind until he has peace with God.
He can read books, build mountain retreats, putter in his garden, swat at a fuzzy round tennis ball, pound a tiny dimpled ball to death on a golf course, luxuriate over a cold drink. But apart from God, it is all sound and fury signifying nothing. Least of all peace.
Thou wilt keep him in – “Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]” John 14: 27Isaiah 26:3-

Some farmers were sitting around a stove in a country store. Having solved most of the problems in the world, they got down to more mundane things.
One of the men just happened to mention that in a very short time he was goin’ to have a heap of yippin’ puppies all over his place and what fine bird dogs they were goin’ to be.
Another farmer broke in and said, “I want to get my name in early. I don’t want one.”
Well now, what don’t you want? Or do you hold to the theory that if a little will make you happy more will make you even happier?
Admittedly without wants the whole economic system would go boom in the night. If we never wanted anything, or bought anything or sold our value on the open market for a fair price, we’d be vegetables and the world would be a mess.
But, I still have to get back to the question, in the midst of all your wanting…what don’t you want?
Do you need to clean out your garage? And, pertinent to what I am talking about today, do you need to also clean up your want list as you clear up your thinking?
No one really knows what heaven will be like, but somehow I just can’t believe it will be a place of clutter. Somehow I think that part of its being heaven will be the gift of simplicity

STRETCH YOUR FAITH FURTHER THAN EVER BEFORE

Let me tell you a personal story. Forty-six years ago we were preparing to put on the Easter Pageant again.
It was in the Orange Bowl and even though much time, sets and publicity were donated free, I had already spent $4,000.and that figure was continuing to mount. Now $4,000, 46 years ago, was a lot of money. And we weren’t charging for tickets, we were just passing the plate.
Rev. Frank Titus, our treasurer, walked into an executive board meeting and reported, “Well, gentlemen, we had $13 in the bank. I just received $7 more, so now we have $20. Fact is, I just got the liability insurance on credit.”
On Friday, the morning newspaper promised rain for Easter weekend. All of Friday and Saturday it was cloudy and it really did look like it was going to pour - and people don’t come to outdoor pageants in the rain.
But I never worried.
I had done all I physically could do, notice the phrase.. all I could physically do. And now it was out of my hands.
What happened when it was all over? We ended up $2000 in the black.
Good business practice? It wasn’t. Common sense? It wasn’t. Would I do it again? Sure would.
Sometimes a leap of faith no matter the outcome just has to happen. That grain of mustard seed is another way of putting it.

Almost 80 years ago, nine famous men, whose vanity was as great as their success, met at the Chicago Edgewater Beach Hotel. They were:
the president of the largest steel company,
the president of the largest utility company,
the president of the largest gas company,
the president of the N. Y. Stock Exchange,
the president of the Bank of Int’l Settlements,
the greatest wheat speculator,
the greatest bear on Wall Street,
the head of the world’s greatest monopoly, and a member of President Harding’s cabinet.
If there is a good reason to be vain they had good reasons enough, but 25 years later what had happened to each of these men?
The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, had died in bankruptcy.
The president of the largest utility company, Samuel Insull, had died penniless.
The president of the largest gas company Howard Hobson, had gone insane.
The president of the New York Stock Exchange, Richard Whitney, was just released from prison.
The bank prsident, Leon Fisher, died a suicide victim.
The wheat speculator, Arthur Cutton, had died with not a dime left to his name.
The Wall Street bear, Jesse Livermore, also took his own life.
The head of the world’s great monopoly, Ivan Kruegar, had given up on life and died by his own hand.
The member of President Harding’s cabinet, Albert Fall, had just been given a pardon from prison so that he could die at home.
It wasn’t the wealth or the power that caused these men such shame and pain. It was what they had done it all for - Vanity. Wealth, power, fame fed their conceit. It was all they had lived for and it was not enough.
And do not confuse vanity with confidence.
What is the difference?
All the difference in the world. For confidence says, “I am God’s child, warts and all.” Confidence doesn’t need a mirror. It doesn’t need a steady stream of compliments to happily survive. Confidence endures quite easily even when being disagreed with. If you wear a crown of confidence rather than a tiara of vanity you can still feel secure in second place, third place or even last place.
When you are confident you just want to be your best and that’s quite enough to keep you busy without letting foolish vanity get in the way.
When Jesus came to earth, His vanity did not dictate that He be born in a mansion.
When He became an adult and began preaching and teaching, His vanity did not demand large audiences.
When He spoke to individuals, He did not first find out if they were important enough for Him to bother with and if they were acceptable to others.
Along with everything else He taught us was humility, and because He taught it, we, with confidence, should seek to practice it.

Almost 80 years ago, nine famous men, whose vanity was as great as their success, met at the Chicago Edgewater Beach Hotel. They were:
the president of the largest steel company,
the president of the largest utility company,
the president of the largest gas company,
the president of the N. Y. Stock Exchange,
the president of the Bank of Int’l Settlements,
the greatest wheat speculator,
the greatest bear on Wall Street,
the head of the world’s greatest monopoly, and a member of President Harding’s cabinet.
If there is a good reason to be vain they had good reasons enough, but 25 years later what had happened to each of these men?
