Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good," but that’s exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values. We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism.
We have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it a choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it political savvy.
We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air...with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression; We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of this state and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great state of Kansas. Grant them your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your Will.

During the days of his youth, this gentle giant did dally with Deism, but it must also be remembered that with passing years, spiritual wisdom took over. 

An ongoing controversy argues, he was not a Christian because he was never baptized or joined a church.  It seems only fair to let his own words defend him against any who would doubt his faith. 

In 1846, with typical honesty he said what was and what wasn’t.   “That I am not a member of any Christian church is true, but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures, and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular…”

It was not that he did not believe in Christ.  He said he would gladly join any church that would not overwhelm him with dogma.  So, it was not a cry against Christianity, but a cry against Christians who, with determined zeal, had split up into over three hundred recognized denominations.

Though six foot four and weighing one hundred eighty-four pounds, Abraham Lincoln was never too big for his long-legged britches. 

He was not overly impressed with himself, always impressed by the works of the Almighty.

 In his growing up he knew little of the thin two hundred square mile strip of civilization hugging the eastern coast.  He would, of course, live and die there one day, this man who would travel so far from the wilderness to Washington.

Would travel, but never alone, for his was a soul attuned to heaven.

P.S.  He was readying to join the church on the immediate Sunday after he was assassinated.

As you woke up this morning and began to make the choices that would shape your day, did you choose the following thoughts, “Oh, what a beautiful morning, God’s morning. 

And, oh how I am going to enjoy my breakfast, and my Sunday paper, and later on, worshiping with my fellow Christians.  And this afternoon, I’ll go for a walk or sit on the back porch and listen to the birds sing, and…”

Or did you have a different set of thoughts that would shape your day?  “I feel miserable and when I finish reading the newspaper I will feel even worse.  Later on that guy at work will drive me crazy like he always does. 

And I would take a walk except for all those crazy dogs who do nothing but bark at me and scare me to death, and…”

Some people spend their time running from job to job, friend to friend, church to church and community to community looking for the proverbial rainbow… with a pick axe - picking and axing their complaining way toward their own private disaster area. 

And to what purpose?

It will date you, of course, but do you remember the cartoonist Al Capp and his cartoon strip Li’l Abner?  Remember the character named Joe Pssst who carried around his own little rain cloud wherever he went?  Unfortunately, as the clock goes tick, tick, tick too many folk wake up each day with their their own little rain cloud – their soul full of doubts, their heart full of hate and their mind full of gripes. 

The Shakespeare syndrome I call it.  Remember Hamlet?  He must have been a jolly companion to have around all day since the best description of life he could come up with was that it was, “stale, flat and unprofitable.”

Do you remember, when you still quite young, how you learned that by focusing the rays of the sun through a magnifying glass you could burn a hole through a leaf, or etch your initials on the side of a tree?  Well, that is why it is so important to meet God in the morning and carry Him with you through the day.  It is a holy habit that can help you to bring all your scattered ethics into focus, to pinpoint your decisions with heavenly meaning, and give proper direction to your deeds.  In short, pray “God, help me” at breakfast so you will be able to pray “God, thank you,” at dinner.

 

Several decades ago, a scientific survey at the University of Wisconsin revealed that professors who had been teaching for 20 years were no better than some teaching only two or three years.  But those who, every few years returned to college for refresher courses and to study new techniques, improved.  Those who didn’t just stagnated.  That’s why it is so important to put God on your calendar and keep Him there.  Even a man or woman “born again” needs a daily rebirth, a daily re-evaluation of habits, a daily upgrading, a daily analysis of yesterday’s happenings. We can change for the better but not if we keep tripping over the same old errors.  Let me say that again - We can change for the better but not if we keep tripping over the same old errors.

Author, David Dunn, once wrote, “Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting…but in this humdrum world there is altogether too much grubbing and too little giving.

 I recommend giving as an exciting and thoroughly satisfying hobby.  Fortunately each of us has a different assortment of gifts - some of us have spare time; others have surplus mental or physical energy; others have a special art, skill or talent; still others have ideas, imagination, the ability to organize, the gift of leadership.  (But) all of us can give appreciation, kindness, interest, loyalty, understanding, encouragement, tolerance – and a score of other little portions of ourselves.”

I almost drowned once. It is a terrifying experience. One gets very used to breathing. I had taught swimming in summer camp. Passed the Red Cross Life Saving course. Water-skied 50 miles an hour. Now I found I could not even stand to have the water flow over my face when I took a shower. 

So I had two choices. Give in to my fear or fight it.

I fought it. Stuck my head in a few inches of water in a basin for five seconds, then ten and finally a minute. I kept working on my private demon until one day, six month later, I was behind a ski boat with ski rope in hand. I was filled with panic, not just fear. I skied anyway. I fell and did not drown. I began to overcome the anxiety.

I refused to have a love affair with fear that could have become a permanent downer. Did I completely conquer my fear? No. Was I better off than if I had given in? Definitely.

----- ------ ---------- A number of years ago two scientists conducted an experiment with a sheep. They tied a piece of wire around the leg of a normal sheep in the midst of other sheep. Then at regular intervals they would send an electric shock through the wire making the leg twitch. The sheep’s behavior remained normal. He ate well, slept well, acted quite nicely, twitching appendage and all. Then the scientists added another factor.

They began to ring a bell ten seconds before they administered the shock. Within a very short period of time the sheep began to demonstrate all the symptoms of severe anxiety neurosis. His eating habits went from bad to worse. He couldn't sleep. He took to avoiding the other sheep. He became highly nervous and agitated.

It is the same with all the people who every day promise themselves it is going to be a bad day, and then work very hard at making their prophecy come true.

We all know the old phrase, Curiosity killed the cat.  In the case of Lot’s wife, it turned her into a pillar of salt.  No wisdom there.

Nor was Peter utilizing a great deal of wisdom, and loyalty, when he denied Christ not once, but three times over.

But fear makes us do a lot of things we otherwise would not do.  We know what is right yet sometimes we fear what people will say or do, and we go into self-protection mode.

Dumb comes easily to all of us. 

I’ve hit my finger with a hammer.  I’ve slammed a car door on my hand.  I’ve stuck my foot in my mouth by saying what afterwards I knew I should have had the good sense not to say.  No wisdom there, either.

We’ve all had stupid moments. 

The Bible uses a different, gentler word for it – Foolishness

Two men were talking, and the first man asked, “Do you know the Commandments of the Lord?”

          And the second man answered, “Yes.”

          “And what do you do with them?”

          “I pick and chose.” he replied.  “I pick and chose.”

That’s not very wise, is it?

          M.D., PhD, DD - we see these titles after a name and many think wisdom…I see these titles and I think knowledge…there is a difference.

Knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, but it is no guarantee.  I have known some knowledgeable fools and so have you.

Tell me what a man’s intelligence has produced and I will tell whether I think he is wise or not.

Knowledge can, and does, produce arrogance, misused power, pride and selfishness. 

Billy Graham once said, “Knowledge is horizontal.  Wisdom is vertical.”

Yes, true wisdom comes down from above.  And when we act with too little wisdom, here comes our heavenly Father again, forgiving us and forgiving us and forgiving us.
