Saint Francis of Assisi until he was 30 years of age would not admit to the presence of his soul.

He was a professor of Eloquence at Milan by day and a playboy by night.

His money, his influence, his insatiable desire to gratify only that part of him called body seemed ready to become King and he its kingdom.

He had a good income, prestige and pleasure galore.

But then one day beneath a cloudless sky, because with all he had he still felt empty he cried out, “O Lord, how long, how long, how long will you be angry with me. Must it be forever tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow?”

Suddenly it seemed like a child’s voice from the distance saying, “Tole lege. Tole lege. Which translated means “Take and read. Take and read.”
Opening the book his mother had given him many years before he read…and reading the Epistle of Paul he read, “Not in rioting and drunkenness; not in chambering and wantonness. Make no provisions for the flesh to fulfill the lusts thereof.”

And who he had been and who he became was a new reality.

And he walked more firmly with his feet on the ground and his heart in the heavens and his soul knew such a health he constantly fell to his knees with ongoing thanks.

“Jesus answered and said to him (Nicodemus) , "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?"

Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

He had sat down and written himself a note…

“Your clothes are on the chair, your brief case is on the desk, your shoes are under the bed and you are in bed.”

The next morning, he got up, found his clothes, his brief case and his shoes…but when he looked in bed he could not find himself.”

There are certain folk who cannot find themselves…even with their own notes…therefore…it is good to remind that there are…

THERE ARE certain truths that have been repeated so often they have their own particular place in the sky.

To quote an old philosopher

“Everyone needs two things…a home and a horizon.” A place to live in and something to look forward to.

And be enthusiastic about it…

Be enthusiastic in making your home a haven and your horizon filled with examples of what can happen when you follow through with nothing but your best.

Keep a bit of the kid in you…

Carry your enthusiasm into old age with you…

Love…

Because time is short for those who rejoice

But for those who love…time is eternity.

Be diligent…toward God…and about God and about your relationship to this God…love Him and accept His love…and do not be a sluggard about it…because… “A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing.” (Proverbs 20:4)************************

A well known but now deceased atheist and pessimist, Schopenhauer, was one day walking along a boulevard.

His mind was wandering also and therefore not watching where he was going so he bumped into a man who was coming from the other direction.

Angrily the man shouted at him, “Who do you think you are?”

To which a sad faced Schopenhauer replied, “How I wish I knew. How I wish I knew.”

To enter the abode of nothingness where nothingness is God is to never know or accept the truth that…

Who am I? Who are you?

And who is God? And where are we in this eternal scheme of things? Well, I have quoted the following hymn more times than I can count because the magnificence of its answer is the magnificent miracle of our being and the magnificent concern our heavenly Father has for you and me.

Oliver Cromwell wrote the following words a long while ago but they are timeless, “No man has gone so far, as he who does not know where he is going.”

Nor did Henry Van Dyke put his thoughts to shame when he had the insight to pen, “Remember, what you possess in the world will be found at the day of your death to belong to someone else, but what you are will be yours forever.”

When you cross over and move up in journey toward eternities door who will you be? What you have been!

There is an ancient Greek myth; the story of the Siren sisters who sang so enchantingly to sailing vessels passing by their island, luring them to crash upon the rocks.

And as the myth continues one finds all the devices some sailors sought to make it safely by the island.

Some filled their ears with wax in an attempt not to hear the siren beckoning songs.

One captain ordered his sailors to lash him to the mast so he could not steer his ship in that destructive direction.

And then we meet Orpheus and his solution was the best of all.

He took aboard his ship a divine musician who sang and played so wonderfully that the voices of the seductive siren singer’s were drowned out.

And so it with you and me. All the siren songs that tempt us in the wrong direction and how if we but seek the song of God it can save us.

The music of the Master.

Heavenly angels as against devils wrecking our ability to make decisions wise and fruitful.

She was deaf, dumb and blind but her insights were greater than many who could see. So Helen Keller who some thought would never do anything and would always be a nothing wrote with positive application “The million little things that drop into our hands, the small opportunities each day brings…”

And she saw them and she did them.

There are 1.7 trillion stars for every living human being. The ratio between the two is therefore 1.7 trillion to one. And then we remember that we are made in the image of God.

And because of this we are called to do and be masters of a thousand small but important deeds rather than waste our time doing nothing because we thought some deeds to small to do.

Indeed, small things done with great love or giants and can and do change the world.

It is a true story.

A man was sea sick. He felt like doing nothing.

He heard that a man, in the blackness of the night, had fallen overboard and he felt like doing nothing about it. He was half a sleep and he wanted to go back to sleep.

But instead he laid hold of a light and held it up to a port-hole. He had also been sea sick and he felt like doing nothing but he did this little thing anyway.

After the man who fell overboard was saved rather than drowned.

Afterwards, he said that as he was going down for the last time he held up his hand…and when he did…a light from a port hole fell on that hand…and men looking into the darkness; so his hand and grabbed it and pulled him to safety in the lifeboat.

To the sea sick man who was so sick he wanted to do nothing, holding a light up to a port hole seemed such a small and perhaps even useless thing…but he did it anyway.

And this is you and I…looking at some small opportunity and not being in the mood or being too tired or feeling that what we have thought to do is too small to think anymore about…and decide to do nothing.

And when we do nothing…nothing happens…and nothingness reigns…and the world is worse for it.

Accept the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs (17:22), “The merry heart doeth good like a medicine.”  No where in the Bible does it say, “Blessed are they who frown and fuss.”

Don't spend so much time complaining about others you have no reason to compliment yourself.  Don't make the word grim the password for your daily living, or wear a frown like some badge of honor.  Yes, there are things in the world that are truly a pain.  Admit it and then look for some humor in it.  The problem may not become any better but the positive spin you put on it can help you to bear it better.  Would you like an example?  The IRS is a pain, truly, but did you ever stop to think they are really just doing the Lord's work?  After all, doesn't the Bible say we came into this world without riches and that we shall take no riches with us into the next?

I picture the writer of the following lines seated beneath the stars on a star lit night and it is quiet and the majesty of it all controls his thoughts and perhaps even before he can find light and a piece of paper he writes the following lines. I cannot prove this theory but obviously he is, as we all should be, overwhelmed by what I like to call THE DESTINY OF LITTLE THINGS.

“Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make a mighty ocean,
And the pleasant land.

Thus the little minutes
Humble though they be
Make the mighty ages
Of Eternity.

The Empire State building began as a single brick…
The Queen Mary was once no more than a drawing on some pieces of paper…
It took less than a minute to drive the nails into the wrist of Christ…
It took but a few seconds for the snake to speak those words in the Garden of Eden…
In the brief time it took for Stephen to be stoned to death he made a major memory quoted zillions of times down through the ages…

One never knows what is set in motion by the simplest of deeds…

Indeed, go out and plant a tree…plant a tree?...so….

We all become who we are by tiny steps of wisdom or foolish steps that have left wisdom trailing behind - a lie here, an act of faith somewhere else.  A book meant to be read but gathering dust.  A letter that should have been written, the victim of procrastination.  A deed that remained nothing

but a dream.  A decision for God, or the devil, or Mr.-In-Between.

Once, many years ago, a little lad, one of 1500 ragged urchins who came from all over Chicago to Evangelist Dwight L. Moody’s Sunday school, was asked why he went so far to Sunday school when there were others nearby.

He paused a moment and then answered, “Because they love me over there.”
Love not to be loved.
Love not just the lovely.
Love because it is the answer to all this world’s problems and because it is the commandment of God.

Do this because it will bless the world in the opposite manner from how hate curses the world.

Do this because it is God’s commandment.

“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.
