“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, after Peter had dawn his sword and cut off the nearest ear, said, “Cool it, Peter”  Actually he said, “…all who draw the sword will die by the sword” but however it is translated, the meaning is clear “Anger is a five letter curse word.”

The Greeks have a word for anger. It is spelled r-a-c-a, and when properly pronounced sounds like the sound one make when clearing the throat just before spitting..   It is a graphic, rather crude, illustration, isn’t it?  But oh, such a beautiful description of this destructive emotion.

Anger may be only one of the seven sins but it is certainly the one most often practiced.  To find anger is to lose reason.  It paves the way for many regrets and continuous acts of foolishness.  One can seldom be proud of what they say or do when angry.

Someone once said of Jesus, “He had to be divine.  No mortal man could have been that patient.”  Indeed, Jesus could not have loved so much if He had not been patient so often.

A grandmother, celebrating her golden wedding anniversary, once told the secret of her long and happy marriage.

'On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband's faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook,' she said.

"A guest asked the woman what some of the faults she had chosen to overlook were.

The grandmother replied, 'To tell you the truth, my dear, I never did get around to listing them.

But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, Lucky for him that's one of the ten!'

Sometimes we Christians need to proclaim our faith by simple acts of kindness...to family...to friends...even to strangers...to thereby prove we have heard Christ's admontion to love and forgive and be a light unto a world that is too often crude and mean and thoughtless...so a challenge to the both of us and the all of us...be kind for the next 24 hours in a way that far exceeds your usual kindness...be exceptionally kind and gentle and true to the Master's Way.

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

I call this story an early Christmas present...

Her son had been working hard memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant."  His mother did not have the heart to tell him she would not be able to attend because she had to work that night.

But she persevered and was told that she as well as several other parents who otherwise would not be able to see the pageant could attend the dress rehearsal.

Her son was happy.  His mother would afterall be able to see him.

The children were obviously very excited as they sang songs of reindeer and Santa Claus and snowflakes and good cheer.

When they began to sing a song entitled "Christmas Love" she was pleasantly surprised.

Then the children in the front row center stage began to hold up signs with large letters, to spell out the title of the song.

"C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."

The performance went quite smoothly, until suddenly; a small, quiet, girl in the front row held the letter "M" upside down! She was totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W."

The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W."

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together.

A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, everyone understood the reason theywere there, and why they celebrated the holiday in the first place. Why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for their festivities.

When the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:

"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"

And, everyone believe, He still is.
Amazed in His presence,
Humbled by His love.

 (rewrite of an actual incident)

SATISFIED WITH WHAT?

We are presently living in a time of reduction, a time when there is not as much money to go around as once there was.  It therefore behooves all of us to ask questions such as “Have you ever been unhappy because what you wanted was not what you had?”

What are your priorities?  When you pick up the newspaper do you turn to the adds first?  The buy or cry problem.  Your last rummage sale?

Were you participating in getting rid of items that not long ago you felt you simply had to have or you would just die?  Now bought by someone else who feels that they absolutely must possess what you no longer want.

          C. K. Chesterton said there are two ways to have enough; one is to get more, the other is to desire less.

A minister was on vacation and enjoying his needed rest.  One afternoon as he was relaxing on the porch and looking out over a mountain scene he received a phone call from a local congregation.

They had gotten word that there was a vacationing minister in their little community and they wondered if he would be willing to preach the next Sunday.  He readily agreed and the next Sunday showed up along with 12 people who had come to hear him preach.

When it was all over, one of the Deacons came up to him, thanked him and then said,

“We wish we could pay you something but we don’t have any money.  I hope you understand.”

“It’s alright,” responded the minister.  “No problem at all.”

But as he was leaving the church he noticed an offering plate…and the plate was completely empty.  Reaching down into his pocked he came out with a crisp new twenty-dollar bill and dropped it therein.

As he and his wife and daughter were walking hand-in-hand to their car, the Deacon who had spoken to them came rushing up with an envelope. “Wait” he exclaimed, “We couldn’t let you leave without giving you something.”

When they were back home, he opened the envelope and yes – as you‘ve probably already figured out – in it was the easily recognized brand new $20 bill he had dropped into the offering plate.

Turning to his daughter he asked, “Did you learn a good lesson from this morning?  “Sure did, Daddy,” she laughingly responded.  “If you had put more in, you would have gotten more back.”

Affluencza is a sickness we all can suffer from.  Having too much is not good.  Having too little is not good.  If we use our brains and bolster our thinking power with a prayer we can all find the middle ground and be the happier for it.

A plane landed after a long flight.  The flight attendant explained that there was enough time for everyone to get off the aircraft and then reboard in 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman.

The pilot had noticed him as he walked by.

He could tell that the man was blind because his guide dog lay quietly underneath the seat next to him. “Sir,” the pilot said to the blind man, “we will be here for almost an hour.

Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”

The blind man replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.”

Picture this:   All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a guide dog!

The pilot was even wearing sunglasses.

Fear took control.  People scattered and queued at the airline desk trying to change planes!

We do that don’t we... have enough real fears sitting around... and then manufacture some more of our own making without knowing the facts.

Be a dandelion?  Bloom in the face of people who want to dig you up and throw you away.  That is the dandelion you know.

On every mountaintop there are trees growing out of rocks because they have latched on to the tiniest piece of opportunity; a few gathered grains of soil.

And even in the desert an oasis rises green and vibrant against a backdrop of desolation.

And yes, there are a thousand trees that never grow and acre after acre of sand that produces no oasis.

And yes, millions bemoan where they find themselves on the field of life and shrivel up and die, while others do prosper with no more than starlight when what they would prefer was the bright light of high noon.

Not where you live but how you live where you live.  Not what is your job that you think is the worst job in the whole wide world but what do you do with the hours away from your job.

Looking for people to love you or looking for people to love.

Many years ago, from time to time, a young man used to speak briefly to our mid day luncheon club.

He did so from a twisted, sitting position that arthritis had frozen his body into.  He could not have stood if his life had depended on it.

He spoke from a field of life not of his choosing, to spread beauty where otherwise people would see only the ugliness of deformity.

On November 29, 1623, William Bradford, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, made an official Thanksgiving Proclamation.

It was their 3rd year in the new country and all had not been going well.  Nearly half the Pilgrims had died and it didn’t look as if things were going to get better any time soon.  But what did Governor Bradford do?  He proclaimed that the survivors be grateful and thankful, and not allow themselves to be overwhelmed with complaining.

It may have been an over-extension of optimism, but hurray for over-extension.

C. K. Chesterton  said there are two ways to have enough: one is to get more, the other is to desire less.

What I am saying is that if you really want to be happy you need to fall in love  with your own life as it is over and over again.

To search out and polish up the silver lining on your clouds.

To look up at the night sky and see both stars and darkness, but allow yourself to be over-whelmed by the twinkling lights rather than by the deep dark blackness of outer space.

Sometimes, because life has been unkind, we are like a seed – surrounded by darkness.  It is then we are truly challenged to grow toward the light.

The Third Commandment is not a suggestion – not an item for debate, it is a commandment.

When we take God’s name in vain, we trivialize it.  To take God’s name in vain is to lift it up for unholy motives.  “GD you,” someone will say and if they really mean it, how can one so blindly and blandly say it.

And if someone says “GD you,” and does not mean it, how can one be so frivolous with the name of God?

Lift up the name of God in praise, or throw it to the dogs in the midst of idle chatter.

Lift up the name of God in praise, or trample it underfoot in anger or angst.

Lift up the name of God in prayer and praise, or make light of the Creator as a habit gone badly astray.

Or as someone put on a billboard You say His name often enough on the highway.  Why not try saying it in church?

“Jesus Christ is my Savior,” says the man or woman who would not even consider taking the name of Jesus in vain.  “Right-wing, conservative, fanatic,” cry out some.

“Jesus Christ” and it is a curse and many think, “That’s cool man.   I can see you’re not up tight.  You’re alright.”
