STRETCH YOUR SOUL

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog. It is added to daily.

The old man rowed a small rowboat for transporting passengers. One day a passenger noticed that the good old man had carved on one oar the word “Faith,” and on the other oar the word “Works.”

Curiosity led him to ask the meaning of this. The old man, being a well-balanced Christian and glad of the opportunity for testimony, said, “I will show you.”

So saying, he dropped one oar and plied the other called Works, and they just went around in circles. Then he dropped that oar and began to ply the oar called Faith, and the little boat just went around in circles again—this time the other way around, but still in a circle.

After this demonstration the old man picked up Faith and Works and plying both oars together, sped swiftly over the water, explaining to his inquiring passenger, “You see, that is the way it is in the Christian life. Dead works without faith are useless, and “faith without works is dead” also, getting you nowhere.

But faith and works pulling together make for safety, progress, and blessing.”

One thing is for sure, we should, with vigor and enthusiasm, join the Psalmist and his thought,

(Psalm 42)  “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.”

There is loneliness and some of you as you read this awoke in the middle of the night and thought how your checklist of friends and family had shrunk.

Death, sickness, too many have moved to another city or state…or for yet another reason, a friendship or relationship that was, isn’t anymore.  And it hurts and no, God has not died, but you have died inside.

Or, your health has been deteriorating and you see no light at the end of the tunnel.

Or, temptation is alive and well in the host of your days and you are weary from fighting it.

So then, what to do?  Start a marathon session with your soul.

Catch up for lost time by talking and arguing with any parts of your soul that have started to drift.

Tell you soul to fill in the faithless gaps with God.  Tell it once.  Tell it a hundred times.  Tell it a thousand times, if you must.

Why so much repetition?  Because our faith in our God requires more than an occasional reference to it.  “What a friend we have in Jesus?”  Well now, don’t we want to be around a friend, and refer to a friend more than occasionally? A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

During the days of his youth, this gentle giant did dally with Deism, but it must also be remembered that with passing years, spiritual wisdom took over.  An ongoing controversy argues, he was not a Christian because he was never baptized or joined a church.  It seems only fair to let his own words defend him against any who would doubt his faith.  In 1846, with typical honesty he said what was and what wasn’t.   “That I am not a member of any Christian church is true, but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures, and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular…”

It was not that he did not believe in Christ.  He said he would gladly join any church that would not overwhelm him with dogma.  So, it was not a cry against Christianity, but a cry against Christians who, with determined zeal, had split up into over three hundred recognized denominations.

Though six foot four and weighing one hundred eighty-four pounds, Abraham Lincoln was never too big for his long-legged britches.  He was not overly impressed with himself, always impressed by the works of the Almighty.

In his growing up he knew little of the thin two hundred square mile strip of civilization hugging the eastern coast.  He would, of course, live and die there one day, this man who would travel so far from the wilderness to Washington. Would travel, but never alone, for his was a soul attuned to heaven.

BEING POOR

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog. It is added to daily.

In response to the New Orleans Hurricane disaster, John Scalzi wrote Being Poor, a list of statements about what being poor is like.
Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs.

Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they're what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there's not an $800 car in America that's worth IT.

Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away.

Being poor is knowing your kid goes to friends' houses but never has friends over to yours.

Being poor is going to the restroom before you get in the school lunch line so your friends will be ahead of you and won't hear you say "I get free lunch" when you get to the cashier.

Being poor is living next to the freeway.

Being poor is coming back to the car with your children in the back seat, clutching that box of Raisin Bran you just bought and trying to think of a way to make the kids understand that the box has to last.

Being poor is a heater in only one room of the house.

Being poor is hoping your kids don't have a growth spurt.

Being poor is stealing meat from the store, frying it up before your mom gets home and then telling her she doesn't have make dinner tonight because you're not hungry anyway.

Being poor is not enough space for everyone who lives with you.

Being poor is feeling the glued soles tear off your supermarket shoes when you run around the playground.

Being poor is thinking $8 an hour is a really good deal.

Being poor is a bathtub you have to empty into the toilet.

Being poor is stopping the car to take a lamp from a stranger's trash.

Being poor is people angry at you just for walking around in the mall.

Being poor is people thinking they know something about you by the way you talk.

Being poor is needing that 35-cent raise.

Being poor is your kid's teacher assuming you don't have any books in your home.

Being poor is six dollars short on the utility bill and no way to close the gap.

Being poor is a six-hour wait in an emergency room with a sick child asleep on your lap.

Being poor is never buying anything someone else hasn't bought first.

Being poor is knowing you're being judged.

Being poor is checking the coin return slot of every soda machine you go by.

Being poor is feeling helpless when your child makes the same mistakes you did, and won't listen to you beg them against doing so.

Being poor is making sure you don't spill on the couch, just in case you have to give it back before the lease is up.

Being poor is people who have never been poor wondering why you choose to be so.

Being poor is knowing how hard it is to stop being poor.

Being poor is seeing how few options you have.

Being poor is running in place.

Being poor is people wondering why you didn't leave.
"He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and he will reward him for what he has done."
Proverbs 19:17

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

Into this fray, a political Lincoln, a military Lincoln and a spiritual Lincoln moved toward monumental decisions.  Struggling for truth, sometimes befuddled by reality, this man who knew his Bible as well as some preachers would often be asked if he thought God was on the side of the North.  His reply always remained the same. “My concern is not whether God is on our side.  My great concern is to be on God’s side.”9 It would be difficult to place too much emphasis on the spiritual undergirdings he brought to every decision.  This child of the wilderness had had no city lights to mute the stars or compete with moonlight.  He had watched his own growing, side by side with all the other growing things in field and forest.  It seemed natural to him to ponder that human life must be more of mind, and soul a reality

A CONSCIENCE PRAYER

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog. It is added to daily.

Dear Lord,

Let our conscience visit daily the courts of heaven.  Save us from having our ethics too often dictated to by lesser courts and certainly not by the courts of hell.  Our conscience is our soul’s companion, save it from being invaded and infected by prejudice and hate.  May it rather pulse with love.  May we have the special kind of health that comes from following our conscience rather than asking it to follow us.  It is such a gift to know what is right and to do it; may that describe an abundance of our deeds.  May we recognize an unjust law and be willing to speak out against it.  And may we be guilty of arousing the consciences of our community that more good may reign.  Help us to live in such a manner we know we could shout a deed we just performed before the ear of our conscience and it would not shrink.   Save us from doing wrong for no other reason than that society is in the midst of approving it.  Lord, let the flame of our conscience light our way and let us follow that light with joy.

TODAY...JUST SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS...AND A STORY TO THINK ABOUT

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog. It is added to daily.

Dear Mother,

I'm sorry I haven't written these last four months. The reason I haven't is because of a brain operation I had, which was the result of a concussion I received when I jumped from the fourth story of the dormitory when it caught fire.

Fortunately, a young service station attendant across the street saw the fire, called the fire department and the ambulance and got me to the hospital in time.

While I was in the hospital, the young man visited me regularly. When I was released, I had no place to go. He invited me to share his apartment. It wasn't really an apartment, it was just a basement room. It was kind of cute.

Yes, Mother, I am in love. I'm pregnant and we do plan to get married. The reason we haven't gotten married is because of some silly disease he had and failed the blood test.

Sincerely, Your Loving Daughter

P.S. Now, Mother, this is just to let you know: I did not have the brain operation. There was no concussion. I did not jump from the dormitory. It did not catch on fire. I am not in love. I'm sure not going to get married! I did make a "D" in English and an "F" in history. I thought you ought to see these two things in their proper perspective.

And yes…seeing things in their proper perspective is a first class plus in the art of living…now isn’t it?

One of my elderly friends confided, "Grandparents don't have to be smart. Just able to answer any and all questions." Such as, "Why isn't God married?" or "Is there chocolate chip ice cream in heaven?"

Kids can come up with some doozies but when there are answers, and you don't know them, practice humility, and say, "I don't know." Then go to the library or the Internet. To admit a little ignorance isn't the end of the world.
And for those who are determined to worry…that old Mother Goose rhyme:
For every ailment under the sun,
There is a remedy, or there is none;
If there be one, try to find it,
If there be none, never mind it.

No matter what he spoke, the same confusion as to who Lincoln really was, existed just as much in his time as in ours.  Poor fellow, when he was through speaking, almost every newspaper in the North said he had extended an olive branch and

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE HAPPIER AND MORE RELAXED?

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

There are over 600 stories and commentaries on this blog. It is added to daily.

Not in unbelief --    Voltaire was an infidel of the most pronounced type. He wrote: "I wish I had never been born."

Not in money --    Jay Gould, the American millionaire, had plenty of that. When dying he said: "I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth."

Not in position and fame --    Lord Beaconsfield enjoyed more than his share of both. He wrote: "Youth is a mistake; manhood, a struggle; old age, a regret."

Where, then, is happiness found? The answer is simple: In your Christ and mine . He said, "I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man can taketh from you."
   Not in military glory --
Alexander the Great conquered the known world in his day. Having done so, he wept, because, he said, "There are no more worlds to conquer."
   Not in pleasure --
Lord Byron lived a life of pleasure, if anyone did. He wrote: "The worm, the canker, and the grief are mine alone."

As I watched him I could see the tension in his face and how he held his body and I thought of something I just read by a Dr. Julian Lake.

The good doctor had set up two groups; in the first group were people who were unable to relax and in the second group were those who were relatively free from tension.

They discovered that the tense people had one thing in common which was not prevalent among the relaxed group--- they were all extremely critical of others.

It’s really quite simple.

When you love your neighbor and make an effort to at least understand he or she, even if they are not acting neighborly, you feel better.

If you are always finding fault when your complain your complaint becomes a sword slicing away at your emotional stability and making it an open wound.

The old founding Father Benjamin Franklin put it well, “Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.”

Actually, a great deal of criticism is born of envy.  Someone has what we don’t have and we, if not careful, have a need to put them down as a way of lifting ourselves up.

Ah, my friends…
There is so much good
In the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it hardly behooves any of us,
To talk about the rest of us.

There is the classic story about the boss who received a note from one of his many employees with just one word written on it, “Fool.”  He then gathered his workers together and said, “I have from time to time down through the years gotten some notes with no signature,” and then shared the note he held in hand, “but this is the first time anyone ever signed their name and forgot to write the note.”

The terrible thing about being a professional in the art of finding fault with other people is that while we are seldom seeing any good in people we are seldom seeing much good in life either.  It is little wonder that criticizers lead the list of ulcer victims.

And one last comment on what people are always complaining about these days; our armed forces and our government.  Have you ever run a bank? Have you ever led an Army?  When you criticize the way things are being done in America perhaps you should educate yourself in these areas before criticizing.  I know from personal experience that when I have stopped and looked more closely at some of my complaints I realized I really didn’t know what I was talking about.

A  Quote FROM Rev. Wyrick’s 9TH BOOK “THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN”

Would it have made any difference if the man who was President of the United States during the Civil War had not been a Christian?  It took the lives of over six hundred thousand young men, one in every five of the country’s best, so it is no small question to ask.  Is there always the danger that a Christian leader will still be arrogant, angry and more than willing to shape pruning hooks into spears?7  Unfortunately, yes.  But not Abe.  His words spell out clearly how he felt about solutions by the sword.  “The man does not live who is more devoted to peace than I am.  None who would do more to preserve it.”
