Some years ago, musicians noted that errand boys in a certain part of London all whistled out of tune as they went about their work.

Someone suggested that it was because the bells of Westminster were slightly out of tune.

Something had gone wrong with the chimes and they were discordant.

The boys did not know there was anything wrong with the peals, and quite unconsciously they had copied their pitch.

So it is that we tend to copy the people with whom we associate; we borrow thoughts from the books we read and the programs to which we listen, almost without knowing it.

God has given us His Word which is the absolute pitch of life and living.

If we learn to sing by it, we shall more easily be satisfied with life and living because we will not be out of tune and be unaware of it.

How many people have destroyed relationships because they felt they had to keep up with the Jones’ who were trying to keep up with the other Jones’ - ad infinitum.   How many people if asked, “What are you satisfied with?” Would have to reply, “Not much really.  Not much at all.”

Let me suggest, if this is your problem, that you run, not walk, to the Bible.  Open it to the Book of James and read chapter 3, verses 13 through 15, because there you will learn that such bitterness will only give you the evils of envy, selfish ambition, boasting and denial.  James doesn’t pull any punches when he says that this condition is earthly, unspiritual and straight from the devil.

Would you know more of heaven?

Then do not, by your dissatisfactions, be constantly building a highway to hell.  Instead, offer prayers of praise for your uniqueness, and that of others, and you will find satisfaction more often.

If you train yourself to be happy with what you have, you will be not only happier, but blessed

               THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

                         Quote from book below

Do you know that five hundred and fifty-five feet above the ground, there sits on top of the Washington Monument an aluminum cap upon which is etched the phrase Laus Deo?  What difference does it make? From this lofty height overlooking sixty-nine square miles of the District of Columbia, it sends out the message Praise be to God.

Would you prefer to change the writings on the 12th landing of its 898 monument steps, a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore?  What of the memorial on the 20th step presented by Chinese Christians?

No one argued against having Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6 being engraved on the 24th.  School children from New York and Philadelphia had suggested this and it was accepted as a splendid idea.

Is there any significance that when the cornerstone was laid in 1848 a Holy Bible was put there by the Bible Society?  There could, of course, have been a book on atheism or no religious book at all, but not if the leaders at that time had not truly believed that this was a “nation under God.”

Our 16th president built on such cornerstones, as well as the personal cornerstones of men such as George Washington who wrote, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”5

Then there was Thomas Jefferson who, before he was Chief Executive, made sure God was part of the Declaration of Independence.

His request was unanimously accepted on July 4, 1776.  Yet another of the Founding Fathers, still to be Commander-in-Chief, John Adams, wrote, “Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.”6

                                              +++++++++++++++++++++

Ever been very unhappy because what you wanted was not what you had?  Or what you wanted to become hadn’t happened?  The old the-grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side-of-the-street syndrome.

What are your priorities?  When you pick up the newspaper do you turn to the ads first?  The buy or cry problem?  Is your life complicated by an increasing number of on-going desires and must-haves, or simplified by picking and choosing prayerfully and carefully?

Have you ever stopped to think that a rummage sale is really a sermon on dissatisfaction?  A getting rid of items that not long ago you felt you simply had to have or you would just die.  Now bought by someone else who feels that they absolutely must possess what you no longer want.

     C. K. Chesterton  said there are two ways to have enough: one is to get more, the other is to desire less.   What I am saying over and over again is that if you really want to be happy you need to fall in love  with your own life as it is over and over again.  To search out and polish up the silver lining on your clouds.  To look up at the night sky and see both stars and darkness, but allow yourself to be over-whelmed by the twinkling lights rather than by the deep dark blackness above, around and beyond..

William Blake put it well when he wrote, “Gratitude is heaven itself.”

God is bigger than the biggest stock market rise or crash. He’s bigger than the latest technological breakthrough.

All the earthly pomp and pageantry in the world to install a president or a king is play-acting as against the eternal ruler of all nations and all mankind.

An office on the 61st floor may well be great, but never forget God looks out from the heights of heaven.  Danger sign!  I

f we play the game called “Earthly mightiness” and thereby put ourselves on a pedestal that should be reserved for God, we have just made one grandiose mistake.

                         Quote from book below

When ole Abe swore on the Bible to uphold the Constitution, the faith he brought with him helped him to honestly support the five references to God found in The Declaration of Independence: supreme Lawmaker, Creator, Source of certain unalienable rights, world’s supreme Judge, and Protector on whom we can rely.  It is not that an aetheist or agnostic could not pay lip service to these, it is just that an obvious lack of enthusiasm would make its mark.

Many years ago two salesmen were sent by a British shoe manufacturer to Africa to investigate and report back on market potential.

The first salesman reported back, "There is no potential here - nobody wears shoes."

The second salesman reported back, "There is massive potential here - nobody wears shoes."
Don't look at  a problem as if it were just a problem but rather as an opportunity to win out with a positive attitude if nothing else...and often a positive attitude will solve the problem or certainly enhance ur ability tio handle it.

If something is broke and you can’t fix it, stop worrying yourself to death as if worry were an answer.  Whether of the body or the spirit, if there is nothing that you can do about it... take one good long last look at the problem and file it away for good.  Trouble is, some people have pop up files.  They file their problem away and then keep going back to see if anything has changed – serving up a plate of rehashed worries over and over again.

Tennis.  I loved tennis.  I had played tennis all my life, but I haven’t played in eight  year now.  Do I miss it?  Am I depressed by the fact?  Nope.  I can’t play.  I won’t be able to play again.  I badly pulled a hamstring muscle and it just won't survive fast starts and stops.

So I count the things I can do and don’t let what I can’t do get me down.  I can’t play tennis - but I can still read and write a book.  I can’t play tennis - but I can still listen to and play music.  I can’t play tennis - but I can still… oh, the list of what I can do is ad infinitum.  So whatever it is you can’t do, check out your ad infinitum list.

CAN GOD SMILE?  CAN GOD CRY?

Plus recent other additions Christianity by Reflex, Stretching your Soul, The Galilee Gallery etc.

Many years ago, a young man used to speak briefly to our congregation on a Sunday morning.  He did so from a twisted, sitting position that arthritis had frozen his body into.  He could not have stood if his life had depended on it.

And I would suggest that there are those who have arthritis of the soul.  Their morality and their belief system so twisted out of shape they could not stand strong and tall above the crowd if they had to.

They have wavered and turned before whatever wind was blowing for so long they stand for nothing while standing for anything.  They have cut their consciences to fit whatever is the fashion of the day.

They do not have a moral backbone like the Grand Dame of playwrights Lillian Hellman.  When it was not at first the popular stand, she stood up against the Senator McCarthy’s witch-hunting committee on communism in the movie industry and refused to testify.  She decided he was fishing without enough bait.

Decided that, yes, there were communists and that communism was bad but not everyone he was trying to incriminate was a communist.  And so courageously she spelled out her reason, “I will not cut my conscience to fit the year’s fashion.”  Finally, she was proven right, but for a time she stood alone.

“A book superior in style and content.”

                         Quote from book below

This book is more than just a march down memory lane.  It is certainly not a search-and-destroy mission as are some historical efforts.  It is really a questing for an understanding of the man able to write, “He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help.”    “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?”  “It is the duty of all nations as well as of men to owe their dependence upon the over ruling power of God.”1   “With malice toward none; with charity toward all; right, as God gives us to see the right…”2

When a president continues to think and speak this way, often commenting on sin and mercy more like a preacher than a politician it is worth taking a second look.  When he called out for, “with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right,” 2 he did not just show humility.  Rather he asked for a national self-examination and that God might be at the center of such evaluation.
