CAN GOD SMILE?  CAN GOD CRY?

Plus recent other additions Christianity by Reflex, Stretching your Soul, The Galilee Gallery etc.

As legend tells it, many years ago in a certain church, on a very particular day, all the people were asked to bring great gifts to lay upon the altar.

All had been told that the greatest gift would cause a miracle. That at that moment a heavenly choir would burst forth with song.

And so they came, bringing boxes of gold, silver, jewels, and spices.  All kind of wealth.  A long line of hope and yet nothing happened.  Silence.  Unrelenting silence.

Then, slowly there came walking down the aisle a peasant girl.

Her tattered clothes hung loose.  Her pale fingers almost luminescent as she moved toward the towering piles of magnificent offerings.  Kneeling, she reached forward and put down…. her hands. . . and left them there.

For a long time she moved them not, offering them to God.  They were all she had, and she gave them.  Then softly, at first no louder than a whisper, came the sound of a celestial chorus, building to a crescendo.

The very walls reverberated with angel voices of acclamation.  For yes, her gift was the greatest, the most wondrous; the gift of self.

Someone once wrote, “God takes a hand wherever He can find it.  Here, the hand of a mother to guide her child; there, the hand of a neighbor to be a friend.  The hands of those who believe.”

Why such emphasis on service?  Because service is the rent we pay for the space we occupy.  Hear this poem and consider it:

Christ has no hands but our hands

to do His work today.

Christ has no feet but our feet

to lead men in His way.

Christ has no tongue but our tongue

to tell men how He died.

Christ has no help but our help

to lead men to His side.

We are the only Bible

this careless world will read.

We are the sinner’s gospel,

we are the scoffers creed.

We are the worlds last message

written in deed and word.

What if the print is crooked,

what if the type is blurred?

What if our hands are busy

with other work than His?

What if our feet are walking

where sin’s allurement is?

What if our tongues are speaking

of things His lips would spurn?

How can we hope to help Him,

and hasten His return?

               THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

Quote from book below

During the days of his youth, this gentle giant did dally with Deism, but it must also be remembered that with passing years, spiritual wisdom took over.
An ongoing controversy argues, he was not a Christian because he was never baptized or joined a church.

It seems only fair to let his own words defend him against any who would doubt his faith.  In 1846, with typical honesty he said what was and what wasn’t.   “That I am not a member of any Christian church is true, but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures, and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular…”

It was not that he did not believe in Christ.  He said he would gladly join any church that would not overwhelm him with dogma.  So, it was not a cry against

Christianity, but a cry against Christians who, with determined zeal, had split up into over three hundred recognized denominations.

Though six foot four and weighing one hundred eighty-four pounds, Abraham Lincoln was never too big for his long-legged britches.  He was not overly impressed with himself, always impressed by the works of the Almighty.

In his growing up he knew little of the thin two hundred square mile strip of civilization hugging the eastern coast.  He would, of course, live and die there one day, this man who would travel so far from the wilderness to Washington.

Would travel, but never alone, for his was a soul attuned to heaven.

P.S.  He was readying to join the church on the immediate Sunday after he was assassinated.

CAN GOD SMILE?  CAN GOD CRY?

There is an answer on how to handle the art of living, it would seem to me that we must first and foremost learn how to cooperate with the inevitable.

We make an appointment and our watch stops.

We go fishing and the only things we catch is a bad cold in a rainstorm.

The inevitable is always with us, even though it is not always kind.  It is why I pray often, “Lord, if I cannot like it, let me learn from it.  At least, then it will not be a total waste of time.”

One day I will die, but I am not afraid because I will but die to live again.  Too often I sin, yet every time God forgives me, and works with me to help me sin less often.  If God be for me, who can be against me.  I believe that.  Just as I believe that----

Once there was an oyster whose story now I tell,

And about a grain of sand that worked beneath his shell.

Just one little grain, but oh such pain for yes,

Oysters have feelings, even though they’re so plain.

This oyster, however, didn’t curse the heavens for such a deplorable state.

Nor berate the government, or call for an election,

Or demand the sea give him immediate protection.

No, he just lay down on a rocky shelf

And talked again and again to his irritated self.

Saying, “If I cannot remove it, I’ll try to improve it.”

Then the years rolled by, as years always do,

And he came to his ultimate destiny in a restaurant stew;

And in place of the sand that had bothered him so

Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow.

The tale you have heard has a moral, isn’t it grand

wonderful things oysters can do with only a morsel of sand.

What couldn’t we do to make life better,

If we’d only begin with all the things

that get under our skin.

               THE SPIRITUAL ABRAHAM LINCOLN

“A book superior in style and content.”

Quote from book below

Into this fray, a political Lincoln, a military Lincoln and a spiritual Lincoln moved toward monumental decisions.

Struggling for truth, sometimes befuddled by reality, this man who knew his Bible as well as some preachers would often be asked if he thought God was on the side of the North.

His reply always remained the same. “My concern is not whether God is on our side.  My great concern is to be on God’s side.”9 It would be difficult to place too much emphasis on the spiritual undergirdings he brought to every decision.

This child of the wilderness had had no city lights to mute the stars or compete with moonlight.

He had watched his own growing, side by side with all the other growing things in field and forest.  It seemed natural to him to ponder that human life must be more of mind, and soul a reality.

CAN GOD SMILE?  CAN GOD CRY?

We are all creatures of habit.  And like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead, some of our habits are very, very good and some are very, very horrid.  One of the very, very horrid is the habit of throwing around GD this and GD that, seemingly without a second thought.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight Oh, Lord, wrote David in Psalm 19, to which many simply reply, “But I was angry.”

And to Timothy’s admonition, Turn away from godless chatter, many folk say, “Godless chatter? I don’t even think about it.  Oh, I guess it bothered me the first time I used God’s name as a cuss word, but now?

Well, you know how it is.  It’s just a habit.”

Yes, indeed, defaming God can became a habit, and that is the point, for glorifying God can also become a habit.

But then here are 10 reasons why some people curse...or...

10) It makes my fanily proud of me

9) It proves I am now a grown up and in full control of grownup language

8) It demonstrates that I have self control for afterall I am the one who has decided to curse

7) It is an indication of how clearly my mind functions...being able to speak in a second language.

6) It makes my conversation pleasing to everybody (without exceptions)  and spices up the air.

5) It leaves no
doubt in anyone’s mind as to my good upbringing and leaves the impression that like so many of my traits I learned them at home.  It therefore enhances my families reputation.

4) It impresses people how easily I have increased in understanding the subtleties of language.

3) It is an unmistakable sign of culture and refinement and in particular enhances any beauty tht is around me while I curse

2) It makes me the type
of person people want around their children because I am such a good influence.

1) It is my way of honouring God

Quote from book below

Lincoln was once quoted as having said, “I don’t like that man.  I must get to know him better.”  People in the South did not like that man, Lincoln, and they were not about to try to get to know him better.  Inexplicably both sides called out to the Prince of Peace for help in winning a war.

IF THIS BE MADNESS THEN WHAT IS SANITY

IF THIS BE MADNESS, this thinking of other people before yourself and of God often and well.  Then follow such madness for there is the hope of heaven in it.

It is certainly better than spending your life
trying to get all you can, keep all you can and let the other fellow get by as best he can.

To every person who lives as if they believe that Christianity and Christ teachings are madness…I say, “If this be madness then perhaps we should double check our definition of sanity.”

Yes, I tell you this…my friends…you name me most of the pain and problems that you know of today and I will tell you that a tremendous, overwhelming percentage of them have come from breaking God’s commandments.

IT MAY BE MADNESS to imagine a world in which our noble thoughts have been translated into noble deeds.

It may be madness to imagine a world no longer selfish, or foolish, or temperamental, or angry, or doubting or sinful.

But if this be madness, then perhaps we should pray that everyone go mad.

Do you know what our greatest problem is?  We are addicts.  Addicted to compromise.  Why?  Because it is easier than taking a stand.

“Because thou art lukewarm, I will spew the out of my mouth” says the Bible.

And we in reply give the excuse “But I can’t stand the heat.”

We are a strange breed; mankind.  We will organize and sacrifice and drive ourselves with an incessant urge to win wars against enemies from without; but we will not exert half the effort to defeat the enemies from within.

If we used half the dedication to win the battle of the soul we would come out such victors on the field of living that it would be difficult to believe.  But we don’t.

We battled in Europe and Vietnam and Korea and Iraq and are still battling in Afghanistan.  But the battle on for good and God  the fields of eternity?  That battle I fear too often we fight as if we are trying to lose it.

                    Quote from book below

No matter what he spoke, the same confusion as to who Lincoln really was, existed just as much in his time as in ours.  Poor fellow, when he was through speaking, almost every newspaper in the North said he had extended an olive branch and almost every paper in the South that he extended a sword.
