There is a bad habit and we all have it…to one degree or the other.

And what is it? The telling of tales…and in so doing like any good novelist embellishing the tale..
He said “You are cheap.” What he really said was, “*(Your name) is thrifty.” Or “She said your dress is the ugliest dress he’d ever seen.” What she really said was “It certainly is different?”

Obviously, this kind of retelling of a tale should never happen. It is mean spirited and should have been dropped, buried and forgotten and not continued with a new life. But sometimes what is shared is innocuous enough but still gets added to until it is no longer innocuous.

We’ve all played that game where perhaps a dozen people sat in a circle and the first person makes a statement to the second person who passes it on to the third…and so on…if you have played the game you know that by the time it has gone only half way around the circle the statement is beginning to bear little resemblance to what was originally said.

It isn’t that we human beings lie on purpose. It is that our memories are faulty and we have a tendency to enliven a quote too often in a negative direction.

So if such a barrage of telling gets back to you. Think positive. Decide that whatever was said was said in jest or out of weariness…and that same person may well have said some nice things about you as well..

In short, stop tenderizing your feelings while at the same time turning that chip on your shoulder into a log jam. I doubt there is a person alive who hasn’t had someone make a dumb statement about them that the person wishes they hadn’t said it.

And remember, when you hold on to anger it is like holding on to a hot coal that just keeps burning and burning and burning some more.

If you are determined to believe that someone really did meant to insult you and did a good job of it do not diminish your own being by growing angry at them. Pity them. Pray for them. Forgive them. But if they were a fool for saying something mean you are the greater fool if you let it just keep eating up your insides.

I have had people say bad things about me and I still greet them with a pleasant “Hello.” Perhaps they are still saying bad things about me. Perhaps they aren’t. But that is their problem. I don’t need to make it mine.

“How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it” wrote Marcus Aurelius.

VALENTINE’S DAY, HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED

The gteatest gift a parent can give their children is for those two children to see two adults daily treating each other with love and respect.

Two hundred and fifty years plus after the birth of Jesus, Emperor Claudius was totally committed to rebuilding the once-great Roman army.

He however believed that it was important for men to volunteer rather than be drafted.

The problem was that most men preferred to stay at home with their wives and children than go off into battle.

Claudius came to the conclusion that only way to solve this problem was to officially declare marriage illegal…so he issued an edict banning all further marriages. It earned him (ALONG WITH OTHER THINGS) the not too endearing nickname of Claudius the Cruel.

Meanwhile, there was a priest by the name of Valentine who thought the edict ridiculous. Indeed, one of the favorite times of his priesthood was the performing of marriage ceremonies.

So he simply just went on performing these ceremonies in secret.

He would whisper the vows so no one could hear them through an open window and so he could hear any approaching soldiers come to arrest him.

But one night his luck ran out.

The couple he had been marrying escaped but he was captured and thrown into jail.

Now, many of the young couples he had married came to visit him in jail.

They tossed flowers and notes up to and through the barred window to his cell.

It was their affirmation of the love he had protected and proclaimed, the marriages the emperors had wanted stopped.

One day the daughter of one of the prison guards came to visit. Her father allowed the two to visit and talk for hours.

She believed the had done the right thing by ignoring the Emperor’s decree.

On the day Valentine was due to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty.

He signed it, “Love from Valentine.”

And so the custom of sending Valentines began.

And the day he died and sent his “Love from Valentine” note.

OPPORTUNITY AND COMMITMENT

It was to be an afternoon of fun.

The lake lay broad and beautiful before them and the children’s laughter echoed in all directions. Suddenly, the sound was different.

It was a young child in distress.

He had gone out too far and his frightened cries from the deep water reached the gardener who was working nearby.

His hesitation was nil as he raced toward the water and dove toward the stricken youngster.

The little boy was saved. The family kept asking the gardener what they ever do to repay him.

He hesitated, but then said “I have always wanted my son to be able to go to college but I fear I will never be able to afford it. “Ah, but you will,” replied the father of the little boy, “We will
pay his way.”

Years later, when Sir Winston had become Prime Minister, he became critically ill with pneumonia.

The King promptly called on the best physician in the land to minister to him.

And who was this grandest doctor soon standing by Churchill’s bed; Sir Alexander Flemming, the developer of penicillin and son of that gardener who long ago had saved a drowning young Winston.

Churchill often related the tale by saying, “Rarely has a man owed his life twice to the same person.”

All kind of opportunities present themselves in our lives to serve or save.

Sometimes they may threaten our life if we respond or simply be a time when we can give physical, mental or spiritual help without undue effort.

But whatever it is, this opportunity; we should pray for and train ourselves to give of our best whatever the challenge; whether it is the giving of inconvenient time or placing ourselves in danger.

True commitment to being ready to help our fellowman is a commitment we need to make often so that when the moment comes we will not hesitate.

Be it an easy thing to do or a difficult thing to we must remind ourselves…that if everything came easy…everyone would be great in their response.

WORRY ABOUT NOTHING…PRAY FOR EVERYTHING

If you were sitting in the county jail with the usual kind of individuals who people such places, would you be anxious or at ease?

If it looked as if you might soon be walking down execution row, how do you think you would handle it?

To top it all off, suppose you hadn’t been feeling very good and indeed were getting more queasy by the moment, what prescription would you give yourself to make a bad situation better?

Well, meet the Apostle Paul, because these were his problems.

Things had gone from bad to worse and they weren’t getting any better. Seated there in jail he still did not begin to beat his head against the bars in frustration. He did not throw a hissy fit. He just kept repeating over and over and over again. “Rejoice.”

And then he sat down and began to write to his largely Gentile congregation in Phillippi a letter filled with exuberant optimism.

Unbelievably, not with fear and frustration oozing out of every sentence, but rather with a host of whoopee admonitions. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Worry about nothing – pray about everything, he admonishes.

Read the entire book of Phillippians and it really begins to get down to the nitty-gritty. A quitter never wins. A winner never quits. Hang in there.

Would you have less anxiety? Then be more patient.

The Bible puts it well, “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage and he shall strengthen thy heart.” (Psalms 27:14) Part of a patience regime means that sometimes you must allow yourself a little time to worry.

Therefore, if you are having the morning blues look at your watch and allow yourself a quota of ten or fifteen minutes of honest concern. Then say to yourself, “

If I need to worry more later on in the day I’ll keep an appointment for some more worry time late in the afternoon.”

After a certain period of time given to worry it is no longer proves constructive in finding answers to your problem but rather destructive.

Would you have less anxiety? Then have hope for breakfast, lunch and dinner. God’s hope.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Would you have less anxiety?

Well, here comes Paul with some more advice, “Work out your own salvation, for it is God that worketh in you.” Seek with mighty diligence to be thankful for the best and try to learn from the worst. Nothing says we have to like grim, gray days when things are going badly, but everything we have been taught in our Christian faith says we must hold on to the truth, God is with me.

“I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly,” spoke Jesus. (John 10:10) It is a gift of energy that is being offered and it takes a great deal of this heavenly vigor to push against some of the problems that come to greet us.

But that is the point, when our spiritual applications are apathetic our responses to life are lifeless and filled with regret.

If God be for us, against the backdrop of not time but eternity, who can be against us. Believe it. It is the cornerstone of our faith.

Because Christ was born there is good news of great joy:
about death and life after death - “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” Because Christ was born we know that death is a gateway and not a dead end street.

And about our sins - “I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more.”
about our anxieties – “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you peace.”

Paul said it, and we say it, “It is not I that live but Christ in me.”

Because Christ was born a brutal heathen people called the Druids received the Master’s touch and became Welshmen.

Because Christ was born there are those in the ghettoes of this world who do not murder and commit mayhem. Because Christ was born there are in the marketplaces those whose king is not greed.

There are always wisemen walking past the worst in life, laying the gift of their lives before the Christ child, different than they would have been because Christ was born.

Because Christ was born a man named John Wesley and his brother, Charles, saved England from a bloody revolution.

Any secular historian will tell you that but for the evangelistic crusades of the Wesleys, England would have gone the bloody way of France.

During the most productive period of his life John Wesley traveled on horseback 5,000 miles a years, preached fifteen sermons a week and looked every hostile and petty man square in the face and did not flinch.

In his wide journeying, he carried a Bible, a change of linen, and the implements of his simple diet. So deep was his devotion, so complete his dedication and consecration, that it has been movingly said of him, “When at length he came to die, he left only a knife, a fork, two spoons… and the Methodist Church.”

William James put it well, “Give yourself to something that will outlast you.” And a Christian looked at me the other day and said, “I’ve stopped passing the buck and started bucking the line.”

I have not concealed Your righteousness within my heart; I have proclaimed Your faithfulness and Your salvation. I have not hid away Your steadfast love and Your truth from the great assembly. Psalm 40: 10

1O EASY WAYS TO KILL A CHURCH

*******************************************

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND THIS BLOG TO A FRIEND GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG AND CLICK ON THE ENVELOPE.

*******************************************

There are over 500 stories and commentaries on this blog that began Nov 24, 2009. We'd hope and pray that as you file back through the days many of them will hold special inspiration and motivation for you.

*******************************************

1. Never invite anyone to church. If the word NEVER seems to severe just procrastinate. This will have the same affect...even though the principle is being applied one day at a time.

"I was attacked by a fit of shyness." "I didn't want to be considered a fanatic." "My boss doesn't like Christians, so what could I do?"

2. If some new people come to church anyway, ignore them.
You can sit by them, but don't speak to them. Sing by them, but don't
offer to share your hymnbook. When the church service is over
,
immediately turn your back on them and begin to talk with another church member.

If you suffer an attack of conscience, you can usually overcome this by assuring yourself that someone else will be visitor-friendly.

If a visitor appears to want to speak to the pastor as he or she leaves
the church, engage the pastor in an extended conversation. Most visitors
will soon grow weary and will leave by another door.

3. If you are gregarious by nature and find it impossible not to greet a
visitor, be sure not to speak kindly about the church or anyone in it.
Tell the visitor about any troubles there are in the
choir or among the
officers. Mention that the women's or men's group is a clique (unless of
course you are a member of the group) and that you wouldn't go if they
paid you.

4. During the week drink like it is going out of style, curse like an
R-rated movie, and spread lies as if you invented gossip
.

Nothing drives people away from the church and Christ like Christians who
don't act like Christians.
Work hard at making at least one person every
day comment, "If he (she) is a Christian, I'm not interested."

5. Avoid an active prayer life as if it were the plague.
Prayer evokes the presence of the Holy Spirit and can cause evangelistic
zeal. An occasional prayer in a time of need is acceptable, but anything
beyond this can cause things to get out of control.

6. Always refuse any opportunity for service to your church--or say "Yes"
even though you know you will never follow through.

These kinds of actions can keep the work of any church body at a high
level of inefficiency. If they are practiced with persistence and
consistency, a church may even have to close its doors. Or if this does
not bring about a complete collapse, it will cause at the least a lot of MAJOR
limping.

And the best thing about this is that a few people are left
trying to do everything, which produces jealousy as many begin to complain that
"a few people are running the church." It is a wonderful two-edged sword.

7. Memorize certain classic clichés that serve as excuses, and repeat
them every time there is even the smallest opportunity:
"God doesn't expect you to be in church every time the door opens." "You
can't love everyone; God certainly understands that." "It's the
preacher's job to go out and get new members. That's what we pay him for."
(There are others, but these are good starters.)

8. Avoid being open-minded.
Narrow-mindedness has a very high success rate at driving people away
from the church. If someone does not agree with you 100 percent, strike him or her off your list.

Consider that man or woman a moron or imbecile. Have no patience with anyone who is struggling toward faith and asks questions. Believe that they are only trying to be difficult.

9. When the offering plate is passed, be sure you are one of those
responsible for a poorly paid preacher, a building in need of repair, a
lack of necessary supplies, etc.

It is amazing how this can set in motion a growing pessimism that will
spread throughout the entire congregation. All it took was your not
carrying your share of the load.

10. Definitely complain about the minister's faults and don’t mention any of his or her virtues.

This is extremely important, and an occasional complaint will not do. It
really isn't difficult. All the pastor's sermons will not be to your
discriminating taste.

(If you find yourself feeling appreciative of his or her efforts, a little lukewarmness can soon dampen any enthusiasm.)

And be patient. Soon your preacher will say or do the wrong thing (preachers are, after all, human). He or she will lose his/her temper with Mr. Jones or fail to call on Mrs. Brown. What is good about this is that it will
divide the congregation into "pros" and "cons."

These rules for hurting a church and any evangelistic program it may have,
are gleanings from the ages.

They have been tried and found to work by countless thousands, perhaps even millions. The number of folks who have been driven from the church and the throne of grace by
such actions are endless.

I remember the first time I saw the word "adult language" preceding the showing of a film.

Was it just a warning or informational piece telling me that I would be hearing obscenity… or was it a kind of permission time? Was it verbal pollution finally getting a stamp of approval in living color?

Men and now more women have been cursing for years.

It is just that now Hollywood was opening up creative classes to teach children how earlier than normal and help adults to improve their clichéd chatter.

And I thought…do all the G-D, the F words and all their combinations on theme... make life better? The movies better. Can they be called moments of inspiration that brighten mornings' glow or evenings' serenity?

Or do they just allow undisciplined expression to fill in in place of solid thought? Almost everyone has sworn at some time in his or her lives, some with more restraint than others, some with no restraint at all.

The problem is that after awhile the sweared at and the swearee no longer notice. Like a pig in the mud, after awhile it just doesn't matter anymore.

Some more thoughts on the subject…

Should little kids be punished for something they learned from their parents?

Is cursing a crutch for the conversationally crippled?

Psalm 19:14: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

"Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse." (Proverbs 19:1)
